Abstract

Abstract In this brief article, the extension of density functional theory for non-equilibrium systems is presented. Density functional theory is a powerful framework in order to study the static properties of electronic systems via a variational principle whereby the density (varies in 3 dimension space) holds a key role instead of the many-body wave function. Evans (Adv. Phys., 1979) fully realized the importance of this and extended the theory for inhomogeneous fluid systems. Then in an urgent need to extend the theory for dynamical equilibrium or non-equilibrium systems, comes dynamical density functional theory. Here, the idea behind dynamical density functional theory is given based on the Smoluchowski equation.   Keywords: density functional theory, non-equilibrium systems, variational principle, Smoluchowski equation

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the behavior of one-body, two-body, and three-body correlation functions of the model dynamics TASEP with sequential updating rules and open boundary conditions on vehicular traffic around the end of the traffic light. The study began with the determination of algorithm to model the dynamics of TASEP and coding, with the variation of the input rate (α) , the output rate (β), and the number of  lattice sites (N). Then the program  run with specific time limit (t) and number of  systems (M). The value of the one-body correlation function determines the average occupancy of particles in lattice site-i at time t. Two-body correlation function determines the average occupancy of particle at site-i when there is another particle occupying the nearest neighbor lattice, i+1, at time t. Three-body correlation function determines the average occupancy of particles to occupy lattice site-i when there are other particles occupying the nearest and next nearest neighbor lattice sites, i+1 and i+2, at time t. The value of the one-body correlation function turns out to be larger than the value of the two-body correlation function. The value of the two-body correlation function is larger than the value of the three-body correlation function for all phases. The correlation between a vehicle to another vehicle will be even greater. Keywords:     TASEP, sequential updating, n-body correlation function

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract   A variational principle is derived based upon the canonical partition functions. This variational principle is obtained using the Gibbs variational principle. Firstly, the Gibbs variational principle is highlighted for the canonical ensemble. Then, the Gibbs variational principle is modified such that a variational principle concerning the partition function is obtained. The latter variational principle is useful as the canonical partition function is an important quantity in deriving many thermodynamic quantities of a physical system based upon the distribution of the constituents that makes up the system.   Key words: variational principle, Gibbs variational principle, partition function

Abstract

Carbon nanodots (Cdots) have many unique properties such as luminescence that can be utilized in various fields. The purposes of this study are to synthesize Cdots from kangkung (Ipomoea aquatica) through frying and roasting techniques and compare the optical properties of the Cdots using UV-Vis, PL, and FTIR. Three stages of synthesizing process of Cdots, i.e.: preparing the kangkung powder (root, stem, leaf) and synthesizing the Cdots through frying and roasting techniques. Each part (root, stem, and leaf) was heated in an oven at 250 oC for 2 hours and mashed into powder. The frying method was done by frying 15 g of the powder in 120 ml oil for 5 minutes at 88 oC, filtered, and dissolved in n-hexane. In addition, the roasting method was done by frying the powder without oil as much as 15 g for 5 minutes, dissolved in 120 ml of distilled water, and then filtered. The UV-Vis characterization showed one absorbance peak for Cdots via frying and roasting techniques at 293 nm to 296 nm and 262 nm to 282 nm, respectively. The Cdots through frying and roasting techniques produce red and green luminescence, respectively. The FTIR characterization showed the presence of C=C and C=O functional groups, which are the core and surface state of the Cdots by frying technique, while the samples via roasting technique showed only the core. It can be concluded that the Cdots samples obtained from frying and roasting methods have different optical properties. The frying method produces Cdots with longer wavelength at the absorbance peak in the UV-Vis test compared to the roasting method. Moreover, the frying and roasting methods produce different color luminescence.

Abstract

In this research, roasting temperature at 400C and sulphuric acid concentration variations was conducted to obtain titanium dioxide from zircon sand. The research was done through extraction metallurgy method which involved physical, chemical, and mechanical treatments. Zircon was magnetically separated, mixed with NaOH, and roasted with temperature of 400C. Characterization with XRD of the sample before and aftermagnetic separation was conducted. Peaks obtained from NaFeO2, NaTiO2, Na0.75Fe0.75Ti0.25O2, and TiO2 compounds were observed. In this study, the leaching process lasted in two stages. For the first leaching samples of combustion products are leached using distilled water to remove water-soluble impurities. For the second stage, the deposition obtained from stage one is leached using 8, 10, and 12 M concentrated sulphuric acid at high temperature to dissolve iron. XRD was used to characterize TiO2. The result showed that the sample at temperature of 400C and concentrated sulphuric acid of 12Mis whiter in colour compared to other samples. Furthermore, at temperature 400C and concentrated sulphuric acid of 12 M, the titanium dioxide produced is 32.3% and 11.5% for rutile and anatase, respectively.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to determine the effect of micro-sized carbon material mass variation from coconut shell leftovers or wastes reinforced with filter paper towards Fe filtration of Mataram canal water. Preparationand synthesis of the micro-sized carbon material is conducted via liquid sonication exfoliation (LSE) method using two main equipments, i.e.: a blender and a self-custom made piezoelectric-based ultrasonication apparatus, and then incorporated into a simple filtration apparatus. UV-Vis spectroscopy characterization is done on the micro-sized carbon material solution, while atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) is done on samplesof Mataram canal water before and after Fe filtration with mass variation of the micro-sized carbon material. The UV-Vis results show that increasing the mass of the micro-sized carbon material increases the absorbancevalues at the same wavelength. The AAS results confirm that the greater the mass of the micro-sized carbon material the smaller the Fe content inside the water samples after filtration. The lowest Fe content of 0.016 ppm is obtained for 3 grams of the micro-sized carbon material.

Abstract

An optical absorbance study using Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometer device has been conducted on graphene oxide (GO) in copper (Cu) ionic liquid using electrochemical exfoliation combined with a direct current (DC) electrical circuit of copper coil given inside the electrolyte solution. The electrolyte solutions used are sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and chloride acid (HCl). The UV-Vis spectrum of the samples shows absorbance peaks at around 214 nm to 218 nm and shouldering peaks around 245 nm to 249 nm. The first peak corresponds to the existence of copper (Cu) ionic liquid in the solution, whereas the shouldering peak is related to the occurrence of GO material. A comparison between UV-Vis spectral of graphite in dimethylformamide (DMF) and GO in Cu ionic liquid in DMF resulted in the existence of a blue shift which signifies the production of Cu ionic liquid from the Cu coils inside the electrolyte solution. Increasing the concentration of the solution increases the absorbance peaks. Furthermore, raising the number of loops yields in the increase of the absorbance value at the first peaks that show Cu ionic liquid, but tends to decrease the absorbance value of the shouldering peaks of the GO material.
