Abstract

The 2018 Sunda Strait tsunami that was not sourced from tectonics earthquakes hit the west coast of Serang Regency as one of the affected areas. On this account, addressing the tsunami risk in this region shall be done wisely through the Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) effort. This research aims to firstly examine the DRR that has been implemented after the 2018 tsunami, and secondly identify the internal and external environmental factors, as valuable input in developing the strategies on enhancing the tsunami resilience. This research has a qualitative descriptive study, using primary and secondary data sources. The data collection techniques employ the literature studies, interviews, FGDs, and field observations. Furthermore, this study applies SWOT analysis to identify the internal and external environmental factors. The results indicate the progresses made in tsunami DRR on the west coast of Serang Regency. However, although policies for coastal area planning and management have been established, there is still a need for community socialization, proper implementation, and enforcement of the law. Moreover, both of robust tsunami early warning system and public education on vandalism prevention is also needed. Finally, the results of identifying the internal and external environmental factors show that there are 3 strengths, 3 weaknesses, 3 opportunities and 3 challenges. Accordingly, the results of this identification can be used to formulate advance strategies in increasing the tsunami resilience on the west coast of Serang Regency. Received: 2024-03-20 Revised: 2024-05-03 Accepted: 2025-12-03 Published: 2025-12-04

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of school principal leadership based on the local wisdom of "Gotong Royong Lobaan" (Gorol) to enhance parental participation at SDN Kutakarang 03, Pandeglang Regency. The research is motivated by the low level of parental involvement, which was previously limited to formal and administrative support. Employing a qualitative approach with a case study method, data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using data reduction, display, and verification techniques. The results demonstrate that the principal successfully integrated Gorol values through social, communicative, and cultural approaches. This strategy effectively transformed parental participation from passive to active engagement, manifesting in physical participation (communal work), ideational participation (planning contributions), and emotional participation (learning support). The primary supporting factors include the strong culture of mutual cooperation within the community and open leadership, while inhibiting factors involve parents' time constraints and education levels. This study concludes that leadership based on local wisdom is an effective contextual strategy for strengthening school-community synergy in rural areas.

Abstract

Background: Waste banks can serve as a practical strategy for implementing Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in school-based environmental education. However, the effectiveness of their implementation is strongly influenced by teachers’ perceptions of how ESD principles can be integrated into learning activities. Objectives: This study examined teachers’ perceptions of the role of waste banks in improving environmental quality within the ESD framework. Methods: This study employed a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design, combining quantitative and qualitative approaches. Quantitative data were collected using a perception test instrument adapted from the New Environmental Paradigm (NEP) to reflect waste bank content across each indicator. Qualitative data were obtained through interviews with teachers. The population consisted of elementary, junior high, and high school teachers in Serang City. A total of 76 teachers were selected through purposive sampling, focusing on teachers in Cipare District, Serang City, due to the active management of waste banks in the area. Results: The quantitative findings showed that teachers demonstrated highly positive perceptions, with an average score of 90% across seven indicators: anti-anthropocentrism, fragility of nature’s balance, possibility of ecocrisis, rejection of exemptionalism, limits to growth, new society planning, and human technological capability. These findings were supported by interview data, which revealed that waste banks have primarily been implemented as part of environmental learning in schools. However, their implementation has not been explicitly designed based on ESD principles, and the integration of ESD values and dimensions into learning activities remains insufficiently systematic and clearly articulated. Conclusion: Teachers generally perceive waste banks as having strong potential to improve environmental quality and support environmental learning in schools. Nevertheless, their educational implementation has not yet fully reflected ESD principles in a structured and explicit manner. Therefore, stronger curricular integration, teacher capacity building, and more systematic incorporation of ESD values are needed to optimize the role of waste banks in fostering sustainable environmental education

Abstract

The water hyacinth problem in the Cibanten River has not been optimally addressed. Community efforts, along with the Youth Organization (Karang Taruna) and the Maulana Yusuf Tourism Awareness Group (POKDARWIS), have generally been limited to river cleanups and community service activities. These activities are temporary, as the water hyacinth will regrow within a short time. However, if managed properly, water hyacinth has significant potential as a biomass resource that can be utilized to create valuable and economically viable products, one of which is biomass briquettes. Community empowerment activities in Kasunyatan Village, utilizing water hyacinth to produce biomass briquettes, have achieved their objectives. The community has successfully increased their knowledge, skills, and awareness of sustainable environmental management. The participatory, case-based implementation method is aligned with the challenges and needs of the community facing flooding and excessive water hyacinth growth. This program has had a positive impact on the environment by reducing river blockages and providing economic benefits through business opportunities for briquette production. Furthermore, it has fostered collective community awareness to maintain environmental cleanliness and utilize local resources independently. In the future, it is recommended that this activity be developed by improving the quality of briquette products and strengthening cooperation with related parties to provide broader and more sustainable benefits.
