Abstract

Biologically, green algae (Chaetomorpha) are a group of chlorophyll plants consisting of one or many cells and in the form of a colony. The main organic materials contain in algae for example polysaccharides, vitamins, and minerals. So far the use of algae as an industrial raw material is still relatively small. Though the chemical components containing in algae are very useful for raw materials for bioenergy. The green algae have a potential as raw material in bioethanol (C2H5OH) production as one of the alternatives and renewable energy. The purpose of these experiments was to determine the effect of a variety of concentrations of green algae on reducing sugar and bioethanol production through liquefaction, saccharification, and fermentation. Green algae flour was obtained by drying in an oven at 60°C for 24 h, then was ground. The reducing sugar was obtained by two steps, i.e., liquefaction and saccharification. In liquefaction, the algae flour was put in an Erlenmeyer 2000 ml and added by 40 mg/l CaCl2, α-amylase, and water until the slurry volume was achieved 2000 ml, then heated at 90°C-100°C for 2 h. The next step was for saccharification, in this step HCl was added in the solution to achieve a pH of 4, and glucoamylase was added, then was heated at 60°C for 4 h. The final stage was fermentation, this solution was then added with urea, NPK, and yeast, then incubated for 72 h. After fermentation, the liquid was distilled to obtain bioethanol. The results showed that the addition of enzymes with a concentration of 2% yielded reducing sugar of 64.62, 34.38, 8.46, and 1.14 g/l, with green algal concentrations of 10, 30, and 40% (w/v), respectively. The bioethanol obtained was 0, 0.81, 2.92, and 5.29%, with reducing sugar of 64.62, 34.38, 8.46, and 1.14 g/l for 0, 24, 48, and 72 h, respectively. However, the addition of enzymes with a concentration of 5% produced reducing sugar of 122.22, 55.32, 10.23, and 1.3 g/l, respectively. The bioethanol obtained was 0, 0.92, 3.71, and 8.16% for 0, 24, 48, and 72 h, respectively.  It concluded that the maximum bioethanol obtained was 8.16 % at algae concentration of 40% (w/v) for 72 h of fermentation.

Abstract

Wetlands are natural wet ecosystems with diverse and complex roles in nature and fundamentally wetlands are at least intermittently flooded with water depths that support the growth of emergent vegetation such as cattail, reeds, sedges, bulrushes, rushes, and grasess. The vegetation provides surfaces for the attachment of microbial films, aids on filtration and adsorption of wastewater constituents, transfer oxygen into the water column, and controls the growths of algae by restricting the penetration of sunlight. The extensive root systems serve as large surface areas for the development of microorganisms and enabling filtration as well as adsorption of sediment. Design of the system consisted of two wetland cells in series, namely the subsurface flow (SSF) and the free water surface (FWS) cells. The SSF had an effluent rate of 8 m3/day, surface area of 35,68 m2, bed width of 3,6 m, length of 10 m, depth of 0,6 m, cross sectional area of 2,16 m2, organic loading rate (OLR) of 179,37 kg BOD/ha-day, HLR of 0,2242 m3/m2-day, and residence time of 1 day. The FWS had a surface area of 19,71 m2, bed width of 2,5 m, length of 8 m, depth of 0,3 m, cross sectional area of 0,75 m2, OLR of 83,21 kg BOD/ha-day, HLR of 0,4059 m3/m2-day, and residence time of 1 day.

Abstract

This paper deals with ferroresonance detection on an transmission line utilizing wavelet transform. The ferroresonance involving linear capacitor and non-linear inductor was triggered by the disturbances of power system, such as lightning strike, switching operation and ground fault. The primary voltage of capacitive voltage divider (CVT) was observed as response of the triggered ferroresonance. The voltage signal was processed using wavelet daubechies (db5) until 9 levels. The cyclic cumulative energy for each condition was then calculated and compared. The result shows that the cyclic cumulative energy ratio and duration of period of cumulative energy deviation can be used as ferroresonance detection parameters. Keywords: ferroresonance; capacitive voltage divider, wavelet transform

Abstract

The effectivity of employing two types of cellulases from Aspergillus niger and Trichoderma resei covalently immobilized on chitosan microparticle was investigated. Reducing sugar from CMC yielded by immobilized cellulase from T. resei alone and A. niger alone was 0.316 g/L and 0.244 g/L, respectively. Simultaneous use of both cellulases shows a significant increase of reducing sugar produced to 1.020 g/L. The effective combination of this two types of cellulases also occurred when coconut husk was used as substrate. A very high enzyme coupling of 92.06% compared to free enzyme was obtained in the immobilization. Addition of GDA not only increased enzyme coupling to 100% but also improved sugar produced. Immobilized cellulase was successfully maintained its activity until 5 cycles

Abstract

The emphasis of this study was to put on the ability of bacteria to form granules in anaerobic wastewater treatment. This direction was taken mostly because the success of wastewater treatment in such systems as Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) depends on how long the biomass is retained, and this is a function of adhesion of bacteria to reach other to form well-settling granular sludge. The granular sludge will remain in the reactor and will be exposed to the continuous supply of nutrients (wastewater) which is injected into it. The wastewater used in this study was synthetic. It consisted of molasses dissolved in water (100%), and a mixture of molasses and peptone dissolved in water (20 % and 80 %, respectively). Several factors or parameters influence bacteria to form good granules and improve the performance of the digesters. The effects of oxygen on the anaerobes, and the extent to which it acts as an inhibitor or toxic was studied. This was found to be both advantageous and disadvantageous.

Abstract

The problem of decreasing and increasing power flow in hybrid AC-DC microgrids in island operations is the concern of this research. This condition arises if one sub-microgrid cannot supply load power requirements, either due to a decrease in power at the source or an increase in load on the sub-microgrid network. As a result, in this research used the bidirectional converter as an interlinking converter, the converter can change the power flow from the ac sub microgrid to the dc sub microgrid and vice versa. With this bidirectional converter, load power requirements can be met even though there is a power change in one of the sub microgrid. The simulation in this research support by Simulink/Matlab software. The model is built in a low voltage system, and the power flow analysis is in steady-state condition with two different cases. The simulation results show the stability and reliability of the power flow in both sub microgrid with stable frequency and voltage when power and load change occur.
