Abstract

Background: One of the highest causative factors of neonatal death in Indonesia is low birth weight (LBW), around 7,150 (35.3%) cases. Even though the trend of LBW incidents in East Java is decreasing, in the city of Surabaya itself the death rate due to LBW has increased from 31 deaths to 51 deaths. Simomulyo Public Health Center was ranked first with the highest incidence of LBW in Surabaya with 45 cases in 2019. Even though there was a decrease in cases in 2020, the death rate actually increased from 1 death to 4 deaths. WHO (2017) defines LBW as babies born weighing ≤ 2500 gr. Nutritional status and parity are two of the many risk factors for LBW. Knowing the causal relationship with the occurrence of LBW is important to do at the public Health Center as a first step in preventing LBW in the future. Method: This research is quantitative with an analytical observational design using a cross-sectional approach. Samples were taken using probability sampling techniques, namely random sampling. The total samples taken were 96 samples. Result: The results of the research was found that there was a relationship between nutritional status and the incidence of LBW with a value of p=0.005 (p<0.05) and the relationship between parity and the incidence of LBW with a value of p=0.001 (p < 0.05). Conclusion: there is a correlation between nutritional status and parity and the incidence of LBW at the Simomulyo Public Health Center Surabaya.

Abstract

Various factors can affect the likelihood of toddlers developing diarrhea. Numerous studies have emphasized the role of hygiene factors, including food and beverage hygiene, maternal knowledge, exclusive breastfeeding, and handwashing practices, on toddler diarrhea prevalence. Given that diarrhea can lead to significant adverse events (KLB), identifying root causes is essential to reduce its occurrence in toddlers. This research aimed to determine the risk factors linked to diarrhea in toddlers within the Gading Health Center's operational area in Surabaya City. The study utilized a quantitative analytical observational method with a cross-sectional design. The population included mothers of toddlers aged 0-59 months who had been examined and lived in the Gading Health Center's area, with 125 samples selected through consecutive sampling. A questionnaire focused on variables such as exclusive breastfeeding, knowledge of diarrhea, food and beverage sanitation hygiene, and handwashing practices was used for data collection. The collected data were analyzed using the chi-square test. In the Gading Health Center's operational area in Surabaya City, 52% of toddlers had experienced diarrhea. While no significant correlation was found between toddler diarrhea and mothers' handwashing practices (p=0.065), significant associations were noted between toddler diarrhea and exclusive breastfeeding (p=0.005), maternal knowledge (p<0.001), and food and beverage sanitation hygiene (p=0.007).

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Highlights: 1. This study was the first in Gresik, Indonesia, to conduct mass screening of tuberculosis among waste workers, comprising various demographic profiles.2. Although the tuberculosis screening of the waste workers showed negative results, mass examination using an acid-fast bacilli smear remains crucial to detect latent infections and prevent transmissions.   Abstract Tuberculosis is a major source of illness and mortality worldwide. Therefore, tuberculosis screening is important to increase the number of active case-finding in a community. Bacteriological examinations can be used to initiate community-based active case-finding. Waste workers face a high risk of contracting Mycobacterium tuberculosis due to their constant exposure to waste. This study aimed to conduct bacteriological examinations to identify tuberculosis infections among waste workers in Gresik, Indonesia, who were considered a high-risk group. An analytical observational study was carried out throughout September 2023 in the Ngipik subdistrict, Gresik, East Java, Indonesia. The primary study was conducted using a cross-sectional design using interviews, measurements, and sputum examinations for all samples. The screening involved a total of 72 waste workers who had daily contact with various types of sewage and waste, including medical waste. The data were analyzed descriptively because of the constant variable. Following the analysis, the data were presented using a table and a figure. According to the acid-fast bacilli examinations, all of the samples yielded negative results. Nevertheless, this study concludes that it is imperative to carry out mass tuberculosis screening in various settings, specifically among those with a high risk. Mass screening can uncover the potential of latent tuberculosis and, thus, reduce its transmission.

Abstract

Highlights:  1. Comics centered around tuberculosis offer a novel method tailored for specific audiences, specifically children or those of school age, to learn about the disease. 2. The tuberculosis comics feature the etiology, prevention, and treatment of tuberculosis conveyed through their unique design. 3. Comics can be an innovative promotional method to support the preventive campaign against tuberculosis.    Abstract As a tropical country, Indonesia continues to grapple with the prevalence of tuberculosis. This study conducted by the Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine at Universitas Airlangga, Surabaya, Indonesia, presented a novel approach to prevent tuberculosis through measures tailored to the socio-cultural context of the population. Specifically, this study assessed how effective the use of tuberculosis comics is as an educational tool to inform junior high school students about tuberculosis. This research was quasi-experimental, with a one-group pre-test-post-test design. Seventy junior high school students in Dukun District, Gresik, Indonesia participated in this study. Each participant received a questionnaire consisting of ten questions about tuberculosis. Afterward, tuberculosis education was shared through comics. The post-test was carried out using the same questions as the pre-test. The data were analyzed using the R Program for Windows, version 4.1.3 (Auckland University, New Zealand). The analysis revealed a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test results (p < 0.0001). As indicated by the data, comics proved to be an effective method of educating people about infectious diseases, specifically tuberculosis. Here, we introduce an educational tool designed to revitalize the educational method for disseminating knowledge about infectious diseases. Ultimately, comics can increase students' interest in learning about tuberculosis, including its etiology, prevention, and treatment strategies.

Abstract

According to the World Health Organization, the gold standard for child nutrition is exclusive breastfeeding. WHO states that babies, mothers and families greatly benefit from exclusive breastfeeding. Even though breastfeeding has many benefits, only twenty percent of mothers in Indonesia exclusively breastfeed. The performance of the hormone prolactin, which produces breast milk, and the hormone oxytocin, which produces breast milk, can influence the success of exclusive breastfeeding. Early initiation of breastfeeding (IMD) is the first step for successful exclusive breastfeeding. The aim of this research is to analyze the relationship between IMD and exclusive breastfeeding in the Mojo Community Health Center Area. This research is observational analytic using a cross sectional research design. The research sample was mothers with babies aged 6 - 12 months who were selected using the purposive sampling method. Data collection through interviews using questionnaires. Data analysis using the Chi Square test and Fisher's Exact Test with α = 0.05. The results of statistical tests show that there is no relationship between IMD and exclusive breastfeeding (p = 0.094), which means that respondents with IMD and without IMD predominantly give exclusive breastfeeding.
