Abstract

This research aims to analyze the use of slang words in Jonah Hill's Mid90s (2018) through a synchronic approach. By adopting Allan and Burridge's (2006) theory of slang categories, Partridge's (2006) classification of slang functions, and Watt's (1984) paradigm of slang representation, this study identifies different types of slang used in the Movie's dialog. It explores their functions in marking teenage identity. Qualitative analysis of the dialog data revealed four main categories of slang: fresh and creative, imitative, flippant, and clipping. The findings also identified three main functions of slang in the movie: society slang, solidarity slang, and trade slang. Further analysis shows how the characters' use of slang reflects and reinforces social dynamics and group identity in skateboarding culture. This research contributes to sociolinguistics by providing a new perspective on the representation of language variation as a marker of youth identity in the era.

Abstract

Discrimination refers to the unfair treatment of individuals or groups based on characteristics such as race, nationality, religion, or social class. This social issue often arises due to differences in race, nationality, religion, and social class. This study analyzes the types of speech acts that reflect discrimination in the 2016 film Hidden Figures. The research aims to identify the types of speech acts and the meanings behind the discriminatory utterances appears in the Hidden Figures movie. The study adopts a qualitative method with a pragmatic approach, utilizing Searle’s speech act theory. According to Searle, speech acts can be categorized into five types: representatives, directives, commissives, expressives, and declarations. The data collection process involves observing the movie, understanding the plot, and taking notes of utterances that contain race and gender discrimination. As the result, this research reveal 15 discriminatory utterances categorized as representative speech acts, one utterance categorized as a directive speech act, one utterance as a commissive speech act, two as expressive speech acts, and one as a declaration speech act. These findings were obtained from the dialogues between the three main characters and other characters. The characters who more frequently exhibited discriminatory utterances were those holding higher positions than the three main characters. Using a pragmatic approach, this research also analyzes the meaning contained within the discriminatory utterances identified in the data. These results provide insight into how discriminatory language manifests in movie dialogue and the types of speech acts used to convey race and gender discrimination.

Memes are a recent way to communicate, particularly popular on social media platforms such as X. Many memes engage readers by combining text with images or videos. An important component contributing to a meme's humor is using ambiguity in puns. This phenomenon demonstrates its importance for readers to comprehend the meaning and function of puns in memes. Nevertheless, despite the growing use of memes as a communication medium, limited study has studied the particular role of lexical ambiguity in generating humor within digital media. This research aims to identify the various types of lexical ambiguity employed in puns portrayed in memes posted by the @Punhubonline X account and examine the impact of these ambiguities on the development of humor. A qualitative descriptive methodology was applied to examine the research data, which consisted of 20 data of recent memes from the account. The various types of lexical ambiguity are identified using Ullmann's theory, and how it produces of humor is described using Kant's theory. Findings indicate that 15 words or phrases demonstrate lexical ambiguity of the polysemy type, while 5 words or phrases demonstrate the homophone type. The conclusion exists that the appropriate application of lexical ambiguity can produce entertainment content in the digital medium of the current day. The employment of lexical ambiguity in memes enables current digital content users to present entertaining content on social media in a more engaging and creative way, providing people to acquire both entertainment and novel knowledge
