Abstract

Through stylistics analysis, there are several stylistics devices which can be used by the linguists in order to develop that study whether in fiction or non-fiction text. In this paper, the theory of speech and thought presentation which is introduced by Leech and Short (1981) is used in analyzing the Islamic preach of two different speakers, Zakir Naik and Syeikh Khalid Yasin. Moreover, there are two research questions which come in this research (1) What are the modes of speech and thought presentation used in the Islamic preach of Zakir Naik and Syeikh Khalid Yasin and (2) what are the differences and similarities of speech and thought presentation modes used by this two different speakers? Therefore, the purpose of this reserach is to find out the modes of speech and thought presentation used by Zakir Naik and Khalid Yasin, and also to find out the similatities and differences between them. This is a comparative qualitative study because it is not in statistical data and it compares the modes of speech and thought presentation in eight video transcriptions to see the similarities and differences between two Islamic preachers. The results of the study show that (1) the modes of speech and thought presentation used by this two preachers is mostly similar in which the high number occurance is narrator’s presentation of voice and (2) it is found that Zakir Naik mostly used speech presentation rather than Khalid Yasin.

Abstract

Although there are many studies about post-stroke, the research about this study is rare. This study aims to analyze the influence of the speech ability of post-stroke patients affected by Broca aphasia before and after speech therapy in terms of syntax. This study uses a qualitative description method. The data in this study were conversations from three post-stroke patients before and after speaking therapy on YouTube videos. This data were analyzed based on Language Acquisition theory regarding language acquisition classifications. There are several types of syntactic structures in language acquisition of the patients before and after speaking therapy and their influence on their speech ability of post-stroke patients in this thesis, Patients no longer experience holophrastic (one word) and two words. This study shows the ability to utter of three post-stroke patients before speaking therapy of the type of syntactic structure, namely, telegraphic speech (70.27%), short sentence is (16.21%) and two words is (8.10%) and holophrastic (5.40%) . The ability to utter of three post-stroke patients after speech therapy of the type of syntactic structure of telegraphic speech is (66.32%), short sentence is (33.67%), holophrastic and two words are (0%). Abstract

Although there have been various stylistic studies of news, the use of narrative stylistic approach in analysing news has not been common. The aim of this research is to analyse the stylistic domains and narrative components in the Associated Press (AP) news. It was carried out descriptive-qualitatively. Ten news were studied by using stylistic units of analysis based on model of narrative structure in Simpson (2004) and Jahn’s classification of narrative components (2005). After completing the analysis, it was found that news is one category of narrative and it contains the use of six stylistic domains and nine narrative components. The six stylistic domains are textual medium, sociolinguistic code, action and event, point of view, textual medium and intertextuality. In addition, there are also occurences of the nine narrative components: narration, focalization, narrative situation, action, story analysis, tellability, tense, time and narrative mode.

Abstract

This article, a part of dissertation entitled  Developing Basic English Grammar Teaching Material based on Interactive Multimedia at University Level, presents the results of a study conducted to find the model of Basic English Grammar teaching material based on interactive multimedia needed by the students. This empirical research employed both quantitative and qualitative analyses. Seventy eight students of English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang were involved. The students  were required to articulate their need on a design of Basic English Grammar teaching material based on interactive multimedia. The data were collected through an open questionnaire. The first result is that Basic English Grammar teaching material based on interactive multimedia is very needed (with the score 3.1 out of 4). Second, the result indicates the organization of Basic English Grammar teaching material based on interactive multimedia. The organization consists of six parts. They are Time to watch/sing/read, Time to chat, Time to Focus, Time for fun practice, Time for tube, and Time for action. Third, the students have different learning style. Fourty two students (53.84%) have visual learning style. Twenty two students (28.21%) have audio learning style. The rest, fourteen students (17.95%) have kinestetic learning style. Four, the finding shows the students have their favorite movies, colors, and music. The students like comedy/humor, drama, horror, dokumentary, and action movies; they love pop, jazz, rock, country, and rap music; they adore blue, green, black, pink, and red color. Another important research finding is almost all students (91%) have their own laptop. Those findings will be considerations in designing the Basic English Grammar teaching material based on interactive multimedia. Further research to see the effectiveness of the model of Basic English Grammar teaching material based on interactive multimedia needs to be done.

Abstract

The complain of the lecturers on English students’ grammar reflected in their understanding of reading text and their writing product stimulated grammar lecturers to find out the ways to make students use the grammar learned. The paper aims at exploring the learning tasks of text analysis and text created assigned to students of undergraduate level. This activity is the stepping stone to get the rank scale of the clause structure in inductive way. The topics discussed can be in the level of phrase, clause, or clause complex. After comprehending the level of scale structure, the students are directed to identify the rules they have learned by analyzing the text. To use what they have learned, students are assigned to create the text related to the topics. There are various activities that can be done, such as individual, pair-up, or group activities. Practices may be in spoken and written activities. As it was implemented in my grammar class, the result indicates that students were motivated and reflective in using the language. In the low level of structure, such as phrases and simple clause, it worked quite well. It didn’t take much time for the students to analyze the text for the rules and created the text assigned. In clause complex structure, however, it took a little longer for them to do the analysis. But the result is good. It is also a challenge for students to create independent activities outside the class, especially for the bright students.

Abstract

This study aims to explain the elicitation techniques teachers use to interact in the classroom. This research is descriptive research. The subjects of the study were English teachers at SMAN 1 2x11 Kayutanam. The data were collected using video recordings and observations in four different classes. Conversation analysis is used to analyze and classify data. The research findings show that there are five elicitation techniques used by teachers. The technique is to ask using pictures, texts, dialogues, body language and techniques designed by the teacher himself. Asking to use dialogue is a technique most often used by teachers to ask students. In addition, inquiring using body language is very rarely used by teachers. In the use of elicitation techniques, teachers use several types of questions. The questions consist of yes / no questions, closed questions and open questions. In its use, English teachers ask more yes / no questions and closed questions, while open questions are rarely used. Student responses to elicitation techniques used by teachers are dominated by simple or short answers. Based on the above findings, it can be concluded that teachers tend to use one same elicitation technique at each meeting so that the process of interaction in the classroom is still dominated by the teacher.

Abstract

The paper aims at discussing the kinds of fossilized errors of morphosyntax which occur in students’ oral communication and to find out the most possible factors causing those errors. There were 10 English graduate students who held thesis seminar as the subject of the study. The data were collected from the students’ utterances during their thesis seminar presentation which were recorded and transcribed then analyzed based on the indicators predetermined. To see the truthfulness of the data, the interview was done, especially to see the factors causing fossilized errors. The results show that 8 out of 10 subjects committed fossilized error and the frequent fossilized errors were manifested in using number marking (taking singular for plural marking) in noun/noun phrase category and substitution of the simple present for the simple past tense, the use of voice, agreement and nominalization. These fossilized errors were due to the Indonesian language interference, pedagogic intervention, and lack of opportunity to use English. Based on the result, it is recommended that the lecturers pay serious attention to the language usage in preparing effective writing instructional design. Key words: Error analysis, fossilized error, morphosyntax, interference, speaking.
