Abstract

Background: Depression is one of the most common mental health problems faced by the elderly among many others. Depression, anxiety, and other negative emotions are important factors in the onset, development, and worsening of hypertension, which can make blood pressure fluctuations difficult to control, accelerate the course of the disease, and reduce the quality of life of hypertensive patients. Objectives: To determine the relationship between the level of depression and hypertension in the elderly. Methods: This study applied a literature review approach using various databases such as Pubmed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. After the screening process, six journals relevant to the topic under investigation were found. Results: There were 6 articles that showed a significant association between depression and the incidence of hypertension in the elderly, highlighting the importance of taking psychological factors into account in their health management. Conclusions: It can be concluded that there is a relationship between depression and the incidence of hypertension in elderly.

Abstract

Hypertension is a health problem that continues to increase in prevalence. Several studies showed that hypertension is related to conditions of oxidative stress which can be caused by increased levels of uric acid in the blood. The aim of this study was to analyze the role of uric acid levels in the development of blood pressure from prehypertension to hypertension. This study is a literature review of the results from cohort studies related to the relationship between serum uric acid levels on the development of prehypertension to hypertension. This study was based on the results of the identification from articles in the Google Scholar with the search keywords “Uric acid serum predict prehypertension to hypertension cohort” with inclusion criteria such as full text in PDF format, english, and span of the last ten years (2013-2023). There were 3 international journal articles which showed that increased uric acid levels could affect the development of prehypertension blood pressure into hypertension. Blood pressure belonging to prehypertension with hyperuricemia had a greater incidence of hypertension than the group without hyperuricemia (P<0,001). Prehypertension accompanied by hyperuricemia had a 2 times greater risk of developing hypertension within 2 years (OR, 2.02; P<0,05). Increased uric acid levels that occured over time also predicted the development of the prehypertensive blood pressure category to become hypertension independently (OR, 1.41 ; P<0,0001). Based on the results of the literature review, it was concluded that high serum uric acid levels or hyperuricemia is a risk factor for the development of prehypertension to hypertension.

Abstract

Background: Chronic inflammation and oxidative stress are complications of obesity. Consuming phenolic compounds found in plant-based foods can reduce inflammation and oxidative stress. Phenolic compounds are phytochemicals with antioxidant properties that play an important role in health. Objectives: This article aims to examine the role of phenolic compounds in obese individuals. Methods: This article uses a literature review method with predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Articles were searched for in several electronic databases, namely PubMed and Wiley Online Library. Results: Phenolic compounds can reduce inflammation and oxidative stress through several mechanisms. One of these is that fermented flaxseed extract improves neural health and reduces obesity markers in experimental models. Polyphenolic compounds from pigmented rice effectively reduced lipid peroxidation and pro-inflammatory cytokines. The findings highlight the anti-adipogenic, anti-inflammatory, and metabolic regulation properties of phenolic compounds. Conclusion: Phenolic compounds play an important role in reducing oxidative stress and inflammation in obesity. Their effectiveness varies depending on the source of the compounds, with promising results from pigmented rice, fermented black beans, and fermented flaxseed. However, most results are from in vitro or animal studies, so further clinical trials are needed to validate these benefits in humans.

Abstract

Introduction:  This study aims to assess the differences in knowledge, attitudes, practices, and salt intake among older adults with and without OB-HT in an institutional setting. Methods: A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted among 50 older adults (25 with OB-HT and 25 controls) in a nursing home in Indonesia. A visual-based questionnaire assessed sodium knowledge and attitude. Salt taste sensitivity was evaluated using a ranked salt intensity test on chicken soup formulations with varying salt levels (0.612–1.125 g/100 mL), and salt preference was measured using a hedonic sensory test. Energy and sodium intake were estimated using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (SQ-FFQ). Statistical analysis included chi-square, t-test, and Mann-Whitney U test (p < 0.05). Results: There was no significant difference in sodium-related food knowledge; however, males had lower sodium knowledge scores (p = 0.029). Attitudes toward high-sodium foods differed significantly only among males (p = 0.023). Older adults with OB-HT exhibited significantly lower salt taste sensitivity, particularly among males (p = 0.043), and demonstrated a stronger preference for higher sodium concentrations in food (p = 0.046). Notably, sodium intake differed only among females (p = 0.047). Conclusions: This study highlighted the relationship between OB-HT and dietary habits, emphasizing the need to identify sex-specific differences in knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding salt intake among older adults.
