Abstract

English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners frequently encounter significant challenges in developing oral proficiency, particularly within high-stakes academic contexts such as seminar proposal presentations. While speaking constitutes a fundamental dimension of language competence, many students exhibit difficulties in verbal communication despite the global prominence of English. This quantitative study investigates the speaking anxiety experienced by EFL students at UIN Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh, focusing on three distinct dimensions: communication apprehension, test anxiety, and fear of negative evaluation. Data were collected via standardized questionnaires from twelve participants across two cohorts (2017 graduates and 2021 active students), all of whom had completed seminar proposal presentations. Findings indicate that communication apprehension was the most prevalent form of anxiety, with all participants reporting moderate levels, manifested through behavioral cues such as hesitation, reduced eye contact, and note dependency. Test anxiety was also prominent, with 92% of respondents experiencing moderate symptoms, including physiological reactions (e.g., trembling, stammering) and cognitive difficulty in handling impromptu questions. In contrast, fear of negative evaluation was reported at low levels, potentially attributable to a supportive classroom environment and familiar audiences. These results underscore the multifaceted nature of speaking anxiety and its substantial influence on learner confidence in academic presentation settings. The study concludes by emphasizing the necessity for targeted pedagogical interventions designed to mitigate these affective barriers and enhance the oral communicative competence of EFL learners.

Abstract

This study compares media coverage of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict between Al Jazeera and Western media outlets such as the BBC, CNN, and The New York Times. The study aims to discover viewpoint gaps between Palestinian and Western news coverage, assess the role of Aljazeera local reporters in promoting world awareness, and investigate biases in media stories from both sides. A qualitative content analysis examined 14 news articles—seven from Al Jazeera and seven from Western sources—that covered significant events during the 2023-2024 Gaza conflict. The study examined variations in how conflict-related events are portrayed, language usage, and narrative framing. The findings show essential differences in viewpoint between Al Jazeera and Western media. Al Jazeera's reporting is typically more humane and passionate, highlighting Palestinian suffering and placing blame for violence on Israeli troops; in contrast, news from Western media tends to be largely ignorant of the sufferings of the innocent Palestinians who continue to become victims of endless indiscriminate bombings. Moreover, Aljazeera local reporters are essential in influencing attitudes worldwide because they provide personal stories of the war in contrast to Western media's more detached, objective reporting style. These results emphasize the significance of comprehending media bias and viewpoint gaps in conflict reporting and draw attention to the particular contribution that local reporters make in offering a more thorough analysis of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Abstract

Metacognition has been popular in reading area, especially when it is related to comprehension and the representation of meanings. Combining metacognitive strategies to represent meanings from a text has been done by previous scholars to help readers construct meaning. In this paper, we present students’ drawings and writings as the results of successive visualisation and summarisation activities in the classroom. We intended to find out the extent to which students’ visual representations can be the guideline for them to write summaries. By employing qualitative research method, we collected visual representations and summaries from 26 undergraduate students studying at the English Education Department of Syiah Kuala University. To understand students’ drawings, we consulted some literature on visual literacy and multimodality; while for the analysis of students’ writings, we reviewed some literature on functional model to language. Based on the analysis, a productive visual representation leads to a strong summary, and vice versa. This result is further discussed in this paper.
