Abstract

Human civilization had been through along with the evidence of history. The city of Malang has its own history which been proved by its buildings as the eyewitnesses. As a part of Indonesian History, Malang contributed to colonialism era in which colored this nation efforts during the independence through its buildings which became the evidence of what happened. The existence of these buildings were important for the record of history, not just political stories but also how did people acted in it. Ignorance of these could erase the history of Malang, in which could stop the transfer information about what did Malang. In this case identified and re-constructed history of Malang is needed to re-built its identity. Through this agenda by historical-description hoped Malang Identity could be found and the building form could re-arranged through its character. If this action done, development of Malang city would be synergy with its own history and identity. Keywords: conservation, history, colonialism

Abstract

This paper is a review of the importance of interdisciplinary reviews in assessing the cosmological aspects of architecture. Architecture is a discipline that focuses on the study of the human environment. Environment and humans are very complex objects. Studies of people and architecture need to involve other disciplines. Involving other disciplines will help the understanding of people and architecture as a cultural product. Cosmology is the key to understanding architecture, especially the architecture of pre-modern society. By analysing the substance of some theories and architectural research on cosmology obtained the conclusion that in reviewing cosmological aspects in architecture is required interdisciplinary studies because architecture is an object that needs to be viewed from many perspectives. This is due to the complexity of human beings who create and create architecture as a place of residence. Keywords: interdisciplinary, architecture, cosmology

Abstract

In the middle of the 14th century, the Five Temples or Five Mountains (Gozan) of Rinzai Zen sect were developed rapidly in the city of Kyôto. The ranking system of officially sponsored by Zen Buddhist monasteries were created by the Kamakura and Muromachi government. The Gozan system originally included three monasteries in Kyôto and three in Kamakura, but immediately spread to five monasteries in several cities. While the two great monasteries, are not members of the Gozan group, which belonged to the Rinka group of Rinzai Zen sect temples. The system, which corresponds to a Chinese hierarchical model, was established in Japan during the Kamakura period. The purpose of this study is to attempt to clarify the history and architecture of Rinzai Zen sect Buddhist monastery. The central functioning building of the Zen Buddhist monastery reflects the repetition, consistency, persistence, and order of the monastic ritual.

Zen Buddhism is syncretism from Taoism and Confucianism. The layout plan of the Zen monastery temple principally was placed on a single axis and facing south. The typical layout plan was borrowed from the architecture of the Chinese monastery.

Abstract

This study aims to determine and see research opportunities related to the application of spatial syntax to spatial configuration in the scope of architecture. The research method uses bibliometric analysis with the keywords Spatial Syntax and Spatial Configuration in the period 2016-2024 using Mendeley software to collect data and VOSviewer software to visualize the data obtained. The results of data collection using Mendeley contain 75 scientific article data related to spatial syntax and spatial configuration. Meanwhile, the results of image visualization using VOSviewer software show 34 clusters and 184 items (topics) that are interrelated. Bibliometric analysis shows that spatial syntax is closely related to the topics of spatial configuration, urban morphology, and social interaction in architectural science. The development of research on the application of the spatial syntax method to spatial configuration is expected to be carried out in the future through this study.

Abstract

Dinoyo Ceramic Tourism Kampong in Malang City has been a significant centre for ceramic craftsmanship since the 1930s, blending industrial activities with cultural tourism. However, the village faces connectivity challenges in spatial management, including narrow roads, limited public facilities, and complex circulation patterns that hamper accessibility and the visitor experience. The objective of this research is to analyse the spatial connectivity of the kampong using the Space Syntax method (DepthMapX software) to identify problematic areas and propose improvements. Space Syntax analysis (focusing on the connectivity parameter) reveals that linear, well-connected circulation patterns encourage higher spatial clarity and social interaction. In contrast, areas with many branching routes and no clear open spaces reduce users’ ability to comprehend and navigate the village effectively. The connectivity analysis highlights key circulation nodes (segments) that act as essential connectors, while also identifying multiple segments with very low connectivity due to their fragmented and dead-end layout. These findings suggest that targeted spatial interventions—such as adding strategic footpaths, widening or linking dead-end alleys, improving signage, and managing vehicle traffic—could significantly improve road connectivity and spatial legibility. By implementing these post–Space Syntax recommendations, the kampong’s visitor movement and circulation can be enhanced, supporting sustainable tourism development and improving the spatial management of the Dinoyo Ceramic Tourism Kampong as an educational and cultural destination.

Abstract

Buntula'bi Balusu Sub-village located in North Toraja Regency. It is uniquely endowed with diverse cultural heritages, both physical (tangible) and non-physical (intangible) cultures, viable to attract domestic and/or international tourists. The objectives of this research were to identify Buntula'bi physical and non-physical characteristics, analyse the tourists' perceptions towards Buntula'bi's tourism objects performances, and formulate the appropriate direction of tourism development within the sub-village. The research employed descriptive and evaluative analytical methods through observations on primary data, questionnaires, documentation, and a set of literature reviews. An evaluative approach was used to measure tourists' level of satisfaction towards the tourism objects performances. Tourism component variables were assessed using Importance Performance Analysis (IPA). Descriptively, the physical characteristics in the study site were in the form of ancestral buildings, which included tongkonan Kollo-Kollo, tongkonan Rantewai, togkonan Lingkasile, alang, banuabugi', and also traditional buildings of kombongan, rantetendan, ranteissun, liangtondon, lokkotarra, and sawahadat. Meanwhile, the non-physical characteristics were identified as indigenous traditions in the forms of tribal cultures and ceremonies such as Aluk Todolo, Rambu Solo' and RambuTuka'. The IPA result showed that the top priority for the tourism development strategy in Buntula'bi was to improve public facilities, optimize road conditions, and develop restaurants and accommodation, as well as souvenir shops in Buntula'bi Balusu Sub-Village.
