Abstract

Low conceptual understanding of science among Indonesian elementary school students and the prevalence of unhealthy eating habits represent interrelated critical issues. This study was motivated by a research gap in the literature: ethnoscience studies on the digestive system remain limited to conceptual exploration or employ other cultural objects (herbal medicine, water ketupat), and no quantitative empirical evidence exists regarding the application of rujak cingur in its region of origin, Surabaya. This research aimed to examine the effect of rujak cingur-based ethnoscience learning on the conceptual understanding of the digestive system among fifth-grade students at SDN Kaliasin VII/286. A pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design was selected due to the limitation of having only one class population (n=23), rendering a control group unavailable, and the study's orientation as a preliminary investigation to test the intervention's potential. The findings revealed an increase in the average conceptual understanding scores from 44.83 (pretest) to 84.65 (posttest). The N-Gain analysis yielded a value of 0.72 (high category), with the mastery learning percentage rising substantially from 17.4% to 82.6%. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test produced a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant difference, with all 23 students (100%) demonstrating score improvements (Positive Ranks) and a Cohen's d effect size classified as very large (d > 1.8). These findings confirm that the implementation of rujak cingur-based ethnoscience significantly enhances the conceptual understanding of the digestive system among fifth-grade students. Theoretically, this study strengthens Ausubel's meaningful learning theory by demonstrating that concrete cultural objects can function as advance organizers, while simultaneously enriching the Culturally Responsive Teaching framework through quantitative empirical evidence. Practically, this learning model can be adopted by teachers as a contextual, affordable, and accessible alternative, supporting the preservation of local wisdom and implementing the Merdeka Curriculum through strengthening the Pancasila Student Profile dimensions of global diversity and sustainable lifestyles.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the scientific literacy of fifth-grade students at SDN Airlangga I/198 Surabaya within the framework of ecological citizenship, operationalized through four dimensions; (1) ecological foundations, (2) conceptual awareness, (3) investigation and evaluation, and (4) action skills. A mixed-methods descriptive design was conducted involving 30 fifth-grade students through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a validated 10-item multiple-choice scientific literacy test aligned with three PISA indicators; explaining phenomena scientifically (SL1), evaluating and designing scientific enquiry (SL2), and interpreting data and evidence scientifically (SL3). The qualitative data gathered through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics for the test results and thematic analysis for observational and interview data. The results showed a moderate overall mean score (52.3%), with SL1 and SL3 also categorized as moderate (56.7% and 57.5%, respectively), while SL2 was notably low (41.0%). These findings indicate that students performed better in explaining scientific phenomena and interpreting data, while inquiry-related skills remained limited. Observations and interviews also revealed that students had basic conceptual understanding but still lacked analytical and inquiry skills. This study provides a foundational assessment linking scientific literacy and ecological citizenship at the elementary level in Indonesia, addressing a gap in existing research.

Abstract

This narrative literature review examines environmental education in elementary schools, with a particular focus on making learning more contextual, engaging, and connected to students' lived experiences. Climate change is often perceived as an abstract phenomenon, rendering conceptual explanations alone insufficient for fostering meaningful understanding among young learners. This review synthesizes 15 literature sources, comprising 12 empirical studies (including research and development, pre-experimental, classroom action research, and mixed-methods studies), 2 conceptual articles, and 1 global policy report, published between 2017 and 2025. The sources address teaching materials, digital media, ecopedagogy, ecoliteracy, STEAM-PjBL, and arts-based environmental education. Literature selection was conducted through purposive sampling with clearly defined inclusion and exclusion criteria, followed by thematic analysis to identify convergent patterns, divergent findings, and research gaps across the corpus. The findings indicate that supplementary teaching materials, interactive e-modules, game-based E-LKPD, and digital media enhance student engagement by presenting content visually, interactively, and in alignment with elementary learners' developmental characteristics. Ecopedagogical and ecoliteracy approaches further support students in understanding environmental issues, cultivating concern, and translating awareness into tangible actions. Art integration provides expressive and affective entry points, enabling students to engage emotionally with environmental challenges and develop deeper comprehension of climate change. The main contribution of this review is a triadic conceptual framework that integrates art, ecopedagogy, and innovative digital media to foster environmental awareness among elementary school students, a synthesis that addresses a gap in existing literature where these three dimensions have largely been examined in isolation.

Abstract

Critical thinking skills among Indonesian elementary students remain limited, largely because contextual teaching materials integrating local wisdom are rarely available. This study developed the Si PURI worksheet through an Ethno-STEAM approach to improve fourth-grade students’ critical thinking skills. Its novelty lies in incorporating pupur, a traditional Javanese powder-based skincare practice, into a structured worksheet integrating science through the chemistry of natural ingredients, technology through processing tools, engineering through production procedures, arts through cultural aesthetics, and mathematics through measurement and proportion. This topic has not previously been explored in elementary Ethno-STEM or Ethno-STEAM worksheets. The study employed the ADDIE development model, consisting of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. Participants were 23 fourth-grade students at SD Negeri 017 North Sangatta, East Kutai Regency, East Kalimantan. Data were collected through expert validation, accessibility questionnaires, and critical thinking tests administered before and after implementation. Quantitative analysis included validity and accessibility percentages, N-Gain calculations, and the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test. Results showed that the worksheet achieved an average validity score of 82.33%, categorized as very valid. Accessibility reached 85.62% based on evaluations from 23 students and five teachers, indicating a very good category. Effectiveness was demonstrated by an average score increase from 59.43 to 77.96, with a class N-Gain of 0.46 in the medium category. The Wilcoxon test indicated a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores (p = 0.000), while 43.5% of students reached the high improvement category. Therefore, the Si PURI worksheet is valid, accessible, and effective for fostering critical thinking skills.

Abstract

Prospective Teacher as Environmental Agent: Between Hope, Opportunities and Possibilities Toward Sustainable Environmental. Objectives: This study aims to capture how students, as prospective teachers and environmental agents, voice hopes, opportunities, and possibilities in addressing socio-ecological and ecological problems of sustainable development. Method: Data was collected through questionnaires using Google form electronic format, interviews, and student activities during lectures. Findings: The research results show that students' understanding of environmental issues as a young generation is still dominated by disaster discourse and solution discourse, which emphasizes individual solutions, technological solutions, and anthropocentric views. It is known that students still consider waste and flooding to be the main problems. Meanwhile, regarding opportunities and possibilities, students see the need for active participation and full involvement in environmental actions such as campaigns through various media platforms, deliberations, sustainable environmental movements, and collective awareness as citizens and citizens of the world for the common good. Conclusion: By placing the environment as an essential and urgent problem, various risks can be prepared, anticipated, thought through, handled, minimized, and solutions sought to avoid social-ecological disasters in the future. Even though students' views are still within a limited range of lenses and dimensions, this has implications for the need for critical environmental learning in improving the quality of sustainable environmental education. Keywords: sustainable education, social ecology, hope, opportunity, possibility, environmental agent.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v14.i2.202465

Abstract

21st-century science education demands the development of critical thinking skills. However, field realities, such as observations at SDN Dungkek I, indicate that learning remains dominated by textbook dependence without contextual modification. This leads to low student engagement and an inability to connect scientific concepts with local culture. This study aims to analyze the potential and effectiveness of integrating ethnoscience into science modules to improve students' critical thinking skills. The study employs a descriptive qualitative method using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach based on Cooper's (2016) model. Data were collected from accredited databases such as Google Scholar, DOAJ, and GARUDA, and analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s techniques. The review results demonstrate that ethnoscience integration has a significant positive impact across educational levels: at the primary level (SD), it helps visualize abstract concepts into concrete ones; at the junior secondary level (SMP), it trains students to verify myths versus scientific facts; and at the senior secondary level (SMA), it strengthens argument evaluation and complex data interpretation. It is concluded that ethnoscience-based learning, particularly when combined with Problem-Based Learning (PBL) or Deep Learning models, effectively transforms students into active learners capable of valid scientific reasoning and inference based on local wisdom.

Abstract

Abstract This systematic literature review examines the effectiveness of pop-up book media in enhancing elementary school science learning outcomes. The study analyzes 24 research articles published between 2022-2025, focusing on three main dimensions: the effectiveness of pop-up books in improving science learning outcomes, the application of constructivist learning theory in visual media development, and the impact of various media on teaching metamorphosis concepts. The analysis reveals that both conventional and digital/augmented reality (AR) pop-up books demonstrate significant effectiveness in improving students' learning outcomes, motivation, and conceptual understanding. Key findings indicate that pop-up books facilitate the visualization of abstract concepts, increase student engagement, and receive high validation from experts, with effectiveness rates ranging from 80-95%. The integration of pop-up books with active learning models and problem-based learning (PBL) approaches shows particularly strong results, with N-gain scores between 0.53-0.71. However, limitations include narrow subject/material scope and small sample sizes across most studies. The review concludes that pop-up book media, when grounded in constructivist principles, serves as an effective pedagogical tool for elementary science education, though further research with larger populations and cross-curricular applications is recommended. Keyword: Pop-up Book, Science Learning, Visual Media Constructivism, Learning Outcomes Abstrak Tinjauan literatur sistematis ini meneliti efektivitas media buku pop-up dalam meningkatkan hasil belajar sains di sekolah dasar.
