This study investigates the pragmatic transfer in English request realizations made by EFL learners, i.e. the proficient learners. The subjects were students of an English Study Program who obtained TOEFL-like scores of at least 450. The data were collected by means of DCT-questionnaires and Role-plays. The results show that the subjects realize requests in the form of external modifications more frequently. Most of them embed their requests with supportive moves dominantly. They enfold the acts with the moves before, after or in both positions. Of the three positions, they mostly insert the moves initial position, i.e., through inductive patterns. This study aimed to find out the percentage of local culture integration and target culture integration in the selected English textbooks for senior high school âEnglish Zoneâ and âInterlanguageâ. This research design was a content analysis with 1487 paragraphs and 638 pictures as the study data. The procedure of analyzing the data started by classifying the data into local or target culture division then it was analyzed based on Byrams cultural content checklist (1993) while the pictures were simply classified into local culture or target culture. The result of the analysis was made in the form of percentage. The results show that for analysis of the paragraph, the percentage of local culture integration in English Zone is 31,23 % and in Interlanguage is 9,6 % meanwhile the percentage of target culture integration in English Zone is 10,17% and in Interlanguage is 11,02%. For the picture analysis, the percentage of local culture integration in English Zone is 6,43 % and in Interlanguage is 18,2% meanwhile the percentage of target culture integration in English Zone is 12,41% and in Interlanguage is 20 %.

The traditional assessments which only covered lower-order thinking skills are still commonly used by teachers in Palembang. Yet the 21st-Century education demands the empowerment of higher-order thinking skills (HOTS). The objective of this study was to find out the validity, practicality, and effectiveness of interactive questions in measuring students' HOTS. The research and development applied was 4-D model which included four stages (define, design, develop and disseminate). The study was conducted on the tenth graders of SMAN (Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri-State Senior High School) 4 Palembang, and SMAN 9 Palembang, in the even semester of academic year 2018/2019. The instruments of data collection were validation sheets and interactive questions. The data analysis techniques used were Microsoft Excel 2010 and WINSTEPS version 3.73.0. In conclusion, the study showed that: 1) the expert validation results were very high category; 2) the instrument was considered as good by teacher responses; and 3) the interactive questions were effective in measuring students’ HOTS.

Communication strategies have something to do with ends and means. This current study attempts to answer the questions “What types of communication strategies were used by the speakers in speaking activities?†and “What were the functions of the communication strategies produced by the speakers in their interactions in performing the same tasks?†The investigation was conducted to the subjects taking Speaking Class at the English Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Muhammadiyah Palembang. The findings show that there were eleven types of communication strategies used by EFL learners in their interactions stimulated by the reading passages and pictures specifically utilized for data collection. Communication strategies were used by the speakers not only because of compensating for insufficient means, but also the need of communication.

Abstract: Politeness principles are universally utilized by the speakers of any language when realizing various speech acts. However, the speakers of particular languages relatively apply politeness due to the cultural norms embedded. The present study attempts to delineate how the Indonesian learners of English (ILE) apply the politeness principles in request realizations. Specifically it devotes to the types of politeness strategies applied and resemblance of the indirectness in politeness strategies in requesting acts. The FTAs and indirectness are the theoretical bases used to trace the typologies of both politeness and request strategies. The data werere collected by means of certain elicitation techniques, i.e. DCTs and Role-plays. The analyses werere done through three stages; determining request strategies, politeness strategies, and resemblance of indirectness in politeness. The results show that the indirectness generally is parallel to politeness. ABSTRACT Purpose - The purpose of this research is to find out how the Effect of Motivation, Discipline and Teaching Ability on the Performance of High School Teachers in the District of Four Lawang.Design/methodology - The design of this study is associative research using a causal relationship. The data used in this study are primary data from the answers of respondents as many as 107 teachers of Public High Schools in Empat Lawang Regency. The analytical method used is multiple linear regression and through testing validity and reliability. Test the data used to determine the characteristics of the data, namely the normality test and linearity test. The model test used consisted of multicollinearity test and heteroscedasticity test.Findings - The results of multiple linear regression testing showed motivation, discipline, and ability together to have a significant effect on teacher performance. Partially motivation has a positive and significant effect on teacher performance, discipline has a positive and significant effect on teacher performance, ability has a positive and significant effect on teacher performance.

The objectives of this study were (I) to know the students' perceptions on the accents of non-native English speakers in the videos and (II) to identify the challenges in listening to the accents of non-native English speakers in Interactive Listening and Extensive Speaking class. The writer used descriptive qualitative in this study. The participant of this study was all students in the third semester of Interactive Listening and Extensive Speaking classes from English Education Study Program. The data were collected by giving the questionnaire to the participants, then analyzing them by using the formula of percentage calculation to be interpreted descriptively. The main finding showed that most of the students in  Interactive Listening and Extensive Speaking classes had a positive perception of the accent of non-native English speakers. They believed that understanding different accents could enrich their knowledge of English accents and improve their listening skills. The challenges and difficulties that students identified in listening to the accents of non-native English speakers did not create a negative perception. They believed that listening to the non-native English accents is not easy because it was challenging for the difficulties in understanding them.

This study discusses about the influence of applying Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM) and learning motivation towards the students’ writing interest on descriptive text at SMP Negeri 1 Sembawa. Pictures are just a medium to draw students' interest. Strategy is needed to make the understanding of the material come to students easier. Visual materials have main function to help create a situation become interesting in language lesson. There is comprehension and intuition of students with varying interpretations that can be built. PWIM is a strategy which allows the students to use their imagination to make sentences based on the words/phrases provided in the picture. The pictures used are associated with words describing familiar objects and the student find words out. The words will help the students to have idea in writing sentences while seeing the picture associated with words/phrases. This research aims at determining the similarities, dissimilarities, and possible learning difficulties faced by the students learning English and Indonesian copulative verbs, as well as the recommendations to TEFL. The descriptive research design was used. The documentation technique was applied to collect the data. To analyze the data, the researchers used a descriptive analysis. The results showed that there were two similarities between English and Indonesian copulative verbs in meanings and dynamic verb. The three dissimilarities were in grammatical structure, tense on subject-verb agreement and certain verbs. The possible learning difficulties faced by the students learning English and Indonesian copulative verbs was tense and subject-verb agreement. The recommendations of this research was as a fundamental teaching guidance in helping English teachers design a better teaching Grammar on copulative verbs, in terms of nonverbal copulative nominal, stative copulative nominal and dynamic copulative nominal.

This study aims to determine the effect of work environment, learning strategy and principal leadership on teachers' performance in public Elementary Schools in Sekayu District, Musi Banyuasin District. The research design used is associative or correlational research because it connects independent variables with dependent variables. The analysis model used in this study is multiple linear regression analysis. The population was 104 and a sample of 83 respondents were Elementary School Teachers in Sekayu District. The study concluded, first, the Work Environment, Learning Strategy and Principal Leadership had a significant effect on the Performance of Teachers of Public Elementary Schools in Sekayu District, Musi Banyuasin District. Second, there is a significant relationship between Work Environment Variables on Teacher Performance Variables. Third, Learning Strategies on Teacher Performance. Fourth, there is a significant relationship between Principal Leadership Variables on Teachers' Performance in Public Elementary Schools in Sekayu District, Musi Banyuasin District.
