Abstract

The implementation of problem-based learning (PBL) method in the teaching of English at the junior high school level has proven to be beneficial and effective, as evidenced by the research findings. PBL focuses on the learning process itself by incorporating real-world issues and problems that are aligned with the school curriculum. This approach addresses various challenges that may arise during the learning process, such as lack of engagement, learning disabilities, language barriers, limited resources, and teacher-student relationships. Therefore, this research aimed to investigate perception of teachers regarding PBL and traditional method of teaching English at the junior high School level. The research design used was descriptive, and it involved data collection through interviews, as well as analysis. The data were gathered from various English teachers at different Junior High Schools in South Sumatra, with a total of 34 participants. A questionnaire was used to measure perception of teachers regarding both learning methods in teaching. The results showed a dominant preference for PBL as the selected method. Moreover, teachers also acknowledged a significant improvement in the learning outcomes of students. The contributions of PBL were twofold, 1) it promoted active learning by requiring students to take an active role during the learning process, and 2) it developed problem-solving skills by requiring the identification, analysis, and resolution of real-world problems.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate how Indonesian university lecturers provide feedback to students, the emotions and challenges they encounter, and the influence of culture and university regulations on feedback practices.  The study employed a narrative inquiry approach, which entails listening to participants' stories and documenting their accounts verbatim.  The research is conducted at four different universities in Indonesia, including both prominent institutions in the capital and smaller universities in lesser-known towns, to get a diverse range of data.  Four lecturers contributed to this research, each originating from diverse locations and educational backgrounds. The data was collected through individual interviews, during which the lecturers were asked several questions on their lives and experiences in providing feedback to their students. Thematic analysis was employed to examine the data. The findings indicate that feedback serves not just to rectify grammatical errors or inaccuracies in the paper but also to enhance the interpersonal relationship between lecturer and student.  The trust, caring, and culture derived from a school or nation have a significant impact.  This study demonstrates that feedback is complex, influenced by the lecturer's identity, the student's emotional state, and the institutional regulations.  The outcome provides novel insights into feedback literacy from the perspective of educators.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate how initiating acts affect refusal strategies realization. The subjects were 45 English Education Program students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Palembang. The study used Discourse Completion Task (DCT) which consisted of 12 situations covering four initiating acts; suggestion, request, offer, and invitations, and the classification of refusal strategy by Beebe et al was also used to categorize refusal strategies realized. The results showed that initiating acts were not insensitive towards the use of direct strategy. However, it has an impact on the realization of indirect strategies and adjuncts. It was also found that both initiating acts and the social status of interlocutors play an important role in producing refusal utterances. Hence, it is highly suggested to introduce initiating acts and social status factors to EFL learners so that they would be able to produce an appropriate refusal depending on the context.

Abstract

This study investigates sound change mechanisms in English and Indonesian through a contrastive phonological approach, with the aim of identifying similarities and differences between the two languages, exploring learning difficulties experienced by students, and proposing pedagogical implications for teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL). A qualitative research design was adopted, and the data were collected through documentation techniques and analyzed descriptively. The results reveal two major similarities and three major differences in sound change between English and Indonesian. The similarities involve regressive and progressive sound changes at the single-word level and in prefixation. In contrast, the differences are observed in regressive, progressive, and reciprocal sound changes at the two-word level, in suffixation and circumfixation, which are identified as unfamiliar features that may cause learning difficulties. The pedagogical implications of this study provide practical instructional guidelines for developing more systematic and effective pronunciation practices related to sound change mechanisms.

Abstract

Speaking remains a persistent challenge for Indonesian EFL learners, partly because classroom instruction often provides limited opportunities for meaningful oral practice. At the same time, students’ frequent engagement with short-form social media videos, particularly Instagram Reels, offers potential exposure to authentic, contextualized spoken English. This study investigated students’ engagement with English roleplay content on Instagram Reels and its perceived contribution to EFL speaking learning. Using a qualitative descriptive design, data were collected from 32 eleventh-grade students in a bilingual class at a public senior high school through closed-ended and open-ended questionnaires. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis to identify patterns in emotional, cognitive, and behavioral engagement, as well as perceived speaking-related benefits and challenges. The findings revealed that students demonstrated strong emotional engagement, reflected in enjoyment, interest, and reduced learning pressure, and high cognitive engagement, shown through efforts to understand, remember, and notice vocabulary, pronunciation, expressions, and contextual language use. Behavioral engagement was mainly reflected in frequent viewing and imitation, while direct interaction and original content creation remained limited due to low confidence and fear of public judgment. Students perceived English roleplay Reels as helpful for improving pronunciation, vocabulary exposure, fluency awareness, tone, expression, and comfort in speaking English. However, distraction from entertainment content, time management issues, technical constraints, and limited confidence in producing videos constrained its pedagogical value. These findings suggest that Instagram Reels can serve as a supplementary speaking resource when integrated with guided imitation, structured speaking tasks, feedback, and confidence-building activities.
