Abstract

The research was based on a preliminary study on the problems related to student reading comprehension. The problems of the study were (1) students have little understanding to convey the meaning of words in the descriptive text, (2) long sentences in the descriptive text make students confused in understanding the meaning of the text, (3) students have a little interest in learning and understanding the meaning of the text, (4) teachers have difficulties to find the suitable method to stimulate students in learning reading text. This study was a classroom action research for the seventh-grade students of SMP Negeri 2 TelukGelam of OKI and its inquiry to improve student's reading comprehension on the descriptive text through jigsaw teaching strategy. This research was conducted in two cycles, each cycle has four steps these are (1) plan, (2) action, (3) observation, and (4) reflection. To collect the data, the researcher used the instrument of observations and tests. The data obtained were presented in two ways, qualitatively and quantitatively. The findings showed that there was an increasing average score from cycle 1 (61.60) to cycle 2 (83.75). It means that was 22.15% of students improving their reading ability to cycle 2. Based on the result, it is concluded that the jigsaw teaching strategy can improve students’ reading comprehension of the descriptive text in cycle 1 to cycle 2.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of discussion method and cognitive style on students’ reading comprehension achievement. This research was an experimental study with factorial design. The total number of sample of this study was 50 students selected with claster sampling technique. The data of this study consisted of the scores on reading comprehension either through pre-test and post-test for experimental and control classes and the scores of cognitive style of the pre-test and post-test. Based on data analysis with two way Annova, the value of F- calculated is =14.40 > than the value of F table =1.64. So, the hypothesis one “There is significant effect of discussion method on students’ reading comprehension achievements” is accepted. Two-way Annova analysis also found that the value of F- calculated on facto b (independent and dependent cognitive style) is = 0.158 < than the value of F- table = 1.64. So, the hypothesis which says “There is any significant effect of cognitive style on students’ reading comprehension achievements” is rejected (Ha is rejected and Ho is accepted). Then two-way Annova analysis found that the value of F- calculated is =3.803 > than the value of F- table =1.64. So, the hypothesis three which says” There is any significant effect on students’ reading comprehension achievements” is accepted (Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected). Based on findings, it can be concluded that this research has mixed results.

Abstract

Since English is claimed as lingua franca among nations, interculturalcompetence (ICC, henceforth) becomes a new enterprise in EnglishLanguage Teaching (ELT). The teaching of English should putforward to capturing target culture, but unnecessarily neglect thelocal culture. It should embed not only the target culture, but alsoother non-native cultures of periphery nations. Responding to theemergence of non-native varieties of English and to the fact that peoplefrom non-native countries of English communicate in English,teaching-learning materials and activities should also cover the nonnativecultures of English. This paper attempts to offer an alternativemode to develop the learners’ ICC. The explicit comparisons, then, consequently comprise both cultures, i.e., learners’ cultures andcultures applied by other non-native speakers. Emphasizing ondeveloping learners’ ICC seems more promising than those ofdeveloping communicative competence (CC), though it is hard to putinto practice.

Abstract

Language use involves not only making choices about lexis, grammar, discourse structures and other language aspects, but also contexts, i.e. topics, participants, settings. The explicit knowledge, sensitivity, and perception on the language regularities, so-called language awareness is essential for the language users to understand and produce language accurately. Learners are also expected to recognize language users’ norms, belief systems and behaviors. Cultural awareness, as the knowledge of cultural differences among the first language cultures and others speakers’ cultures, is of paramount. Since the number of ‘new variants’ of English from periphery countries are increasing (Canagarajah 2002) and at the same time English has become ‘de-nationalized’ (McKay 2002) other speakers’ culture--the writer means--are cultures of inner-cycle (native) speakers, outer-cycle (L2) speakers, and extended-cycle (FL) speakers (see Kachru 1985). Intercultural awareness is vitally taught to English learners as the response to global English.

Abstract

English as a foreign language consists of four skills namely, listening, speaking, reading, and writing. These skills have a particular issue that happens differently for each student. For this reason, it's not easy to understand and master the four language skills effectively. Several issues need to overcome first to increase the effectiveness of each ability. Speaking is one of the skills that seem to represent the students' proficiency to speak English. Unfortunately, the majority of Indonesian students, in particular those at the university level, do not provide an appropriate way to speak English proficiently. Students in the 4.0 era are expected to have good communication skills and the ability to socialize with their community. Speaking also requires practice and a deep psychological pleasure that needs to be comfortable. A related study that improves the effectiveness of speaking in language teaching and learning is important. This study is a descriptive study that explains the importance of effective communication in English as a foreign language. This study also provides an opportunity to measure the effectiveness of teaching and learning English speaking skills earlier in the process, which can increase students' confidence and decrease students' anxiety in speaking skills.

Abstract

The use of technology and character building for students is an effort that can be made to improve the quality of education. Interactive Electronic Textbooks Based (IETB) that are integrated with Islamic values are able to empower students' brain abilities to think critically, creatively, and practice problem solving skills presented by teachers in class, so that learning objectives can be achieved properly. The purpose of this study is to analyze the development of IETB based on the Kvisoft Flipbook Maker application that integrates Islamic values in learning. The methods used in this research are field studies and literature studies. The research subjects were the principal, teachers and students of class XI majoring in science at SMA IT Bina Ilmi Palembang. Literature study was conducted by collecting various relevant sources. Meanwhile, the field study was obtained by going directly to the research location by interviewing the principal and class XI biology teacher as well as distributing needs questionnaires and conducting online learning observations. Based on a literature study, IETB based on the Kvisoft Flipbook Maker application can help students improve creative thinking skills and the integration of Islamic values in learning materials can improve critical thinking skills. The results of the field study found that SMA IT Bina Ilmi Palembang needed IETB to help teachers and students maximize learning and instill Islamic values according to the IISN curriculum used. This product can not only be used in Integrated Islamic Schools but can also be used in other Islamic based schools throughout Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate how initiating acts affect refusal strategies realization. The subjects were 45 English Education Program students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Palembang. The study used Discourse Completion Task (DCT) which consisted of 12 situations covering four initiating acts; suggestion, request, offer, and invitations, and the classification of refusal strategy by Beebe et al was also used to categorize refusal strategies realized. The results showed that initiating acts were not insensitive towards the use of direct strategy. However, it has an impact on the realization of indirect strategies and adjuncts. It was also found that both initiating acts and the social status of interlocutors play an important role in producing refusal utterances. Hence, it is highly suggested to introduce initiating acts and social status factors to EFL learners so that they would be able to produce an appropriate refusal depending on the context.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of learning quality, tutor quality and motivation both jointly and partially on student achievement at the Palembang Open University (Pokjar Pangkalan Lampam - Tulung Selapan. The research approach is quantitative research with associative research type. The population of this study is 186. students. The sampling method for probability with the Stratified Random Sampling method. The sample of this study was calculated using the Slovin formula with an error rate of 10%, the number of samples was 65 students as respondents. The first sample was tested using the Instrument Validity Test and the Instrument Reliability Test. The analysis model used in this study is multiple linear regression analysis. The regression calculation can be Y = -1.649 + 0.567X1 + 0.351X2 + 0.457X3. Interpretation of the multiple regression equation regarding the influence of the Learning Quality Variables (X1), Tutor Quality (X2) and Learning Motivation (X3), on Student Learning Achievement (Y). The results of the calculation of the three coefficients of the independent variable are positive, this indicates a positive linear relationship (unidirectional), meaning that the quality of learning, quality of tutors and learning motivation, the better, the better the student achievement. Obtained a correlation coefficient (R) of 0.712, with a level of closeness between variables of 0.712 which is in the interpretation of the correlation value (0.60-0.799) means that the relationship between the two variables is significant and the level of closeness is strong. The coefficient of determination value R2 = 0.507, which means that the variables of Learning Quality, Tutor Quality, and Learning Motivation are able to explain the Student Learning Achievement Variables of 0.507 or 50.7%, while the remaining 49.3% is explained by other factors not examined.
