Abstract

Honey comes from Trigona spp. has been known for its various health benefits and has the potential to be a natural ingredient that can be used as a preventive measure to inhibit and kill the main bacteria in dental caries (Streptococcus mutans). The dehumidification process using a humidifier is carried out to absorb honey water vapor so that the water content of the honey is reduced and the quality is better. The aim of this research is to determine the effect of dehumidification on Trigona spp. honey as an antibacterial for S.mutans. This research is a laboratory experiment with a post-test only control group design in vitro using the dilution method. Dehumidification is carried out on raw trigona honey to obtain dehumid trigona honey and honey water. As a control, 0.2% chlorhexidine and distilled water were used. The antibacterial activity test was carried out by calculating the total bacterial colonies using the total bacterial colony formula. The results of the study showed that the antibacterial activity of raw Trigona spp. honey had a significant difference against S.mutans with a total number of colonies of 0.4x106 CFU/mL compared to Trigona spp. dehum honey and honey water. Kruskal-Wallis analysis showed that there was a significant difference between the control group and the treatment group in inhibiting S.mutans. The conclusion is that raw Trigona spp. honey, Trigona spp. dehum honey, and honey water show differences in the antibacterial activity of S.mutans so that their use as a preventive measure in inhibiting S.mutans bacteria needs to be considered. This includes school-age children at SDK Jakarta Barat, especially grade 1 children. This school has many students, and even though this school has Usaha Kesehatan Gigi Sekolah (UKGS), the dentist practices only once a week for grade 1 elementary school children. This results in insufficient information needs for a large number of students. In this community, there are no external health workers who provide education about dental health, in this case how to prevent cavities and emergency management if trauma occurs in children.  This community service aims to educate elementary school children in West Jakarta on preventing basic dental health problems that often occur. This activity was attended by 137 grade 1 students. Education was conducted using an interactive method, starting with exposure using audio-visual media, questions and answers, and games. Results are seen from educational participants' pretest and posttest evaluation. The results show a significant increase in children's knowledge with this interactive method. The interactive method is an effective and fun method for educating dental health for children aged 6-7 years at SDK West Jakarta. Keywords: Interactive Methods, Education, Children's Dental Health, Aged 6-7 Years

Abstract

Background: Fabrication of the composite scaffold was carried out by combining chitosan, gelatin, and β-tricalcium phosphate (βTCP) derived from limestone. The extraction of βTCP was based on the abundance of limestone containing calcium carbonate, which can be a source of βTCP synthesis. Purpose: This study evaluates the degradation of the combination of chitosan–gelatin (ChG) and chitosan–gelatin–βTCP (ChG-βTCP) composite scaffolds. Methods: The freeze-drying method was used to obtain the composite scaffold, which was a mixture of chitosan, gelatin, and βTCP. Degradation was measured by immersing the samples in a simulated body fluid solution at 37°C for 3, 7, 14, and 21 days. For statistical analysis, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post hoc Fisher's least significant difference were performed. Results: The ChG scaffold shows better degradability than the ChG-βTCP scaffold. The ChG scaffold shows higher weight degradation than the ChG-βTCP scaffold up to 21 days. Conclusion: In conclusion, the scaffold containing βTCP has lower degradation than the ChG scaffold.

Abstract

Background: Glass ionomer cement (GIC) is a dental material often used in clinical practice. However, its use is limited due to its drawbacks. Natural resources such as propolis have been used to mainly enhance GIC’s antibacterial properties, but other properties attributed to this enhancement also require evaluation. Purpose: The study aims to evaluate the surface hardness, the surface roughness, and the water absorption of GIC containing ethanolic extract of propolis (EEP) from Trigona spp. Methods: Samples in this study were divided into four groups: GIC (control group); GIC + 25% EEP; GIC + 30% EEP; and GIC + 35% EEP. Surface roughness was measured using a surface roughness tester. Surface hardness was measured using a micro-Vickers hardness tester. Water absorption was measured by weighing the samples before and after immersion in distilled water. Surface characterization was carried out using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Data was statistically analyzed using the Shapiro–Wilk normality test and one-way variance analysis along with the post-hoc Tukey’s test to determine significant differences between all four samples. Results: The statistical test showed significant differences in surface hardness and surface roughness between the control group and the GIC + EEP group. However, the test demonstrated no significant differences in water absorption between the control group and the GIC + EEP group. Conclusion: The addition of EEP to conventional GIC can affect its physical properties.

Abstract

Gypsum is a material that is commonly used in dentistry as study model or working model. The accuracy of the working model is influenced by the absence of defects in the model. Dental students need to know the gypsum setting time in order to avoid fracture of the model when opening the model from negative impression before reaching final setting time. Gypsum setting time can be affected by several factors such as water temperature, water ratio, room temperature and mixing speed. Measurement of gypsum setting time has been done before, however, the number of samples used was still few. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the setting time of gypsum with different water/powder ratio on a big number of samples. This research was done by dental students of Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Trisakti as one of Dental Material’s Courses. A total of three types of water ratios were used in this study, namely 27 cc, 30 cc and 33 cc (n = 141). Type III gypsum powder was weighed with the same weight of 100 gr and then mixed by different water ratios for 60 seconds. Gypsum mixture was placed on a container and vibrated for 60 seconds to eliminate pores. The placement of a small needle to measure the setting time begins at the 150th second and was repeated in multiples of 30 seconds until the tip of the needle did not penetrate the gypsum mixture. The results showed that more water ratio caused the setting time of gypsum type III increased.

Abstract

Background: Composite resin is a filling material that is similar in color to tooth enamel and can be used widely for various cases, especially for the restoration of anterior teeth. Composite resins have been modified and improved to obtain maximum restoration results, one of which is nanofiller. Nanofiller composite is known to have a high level of smoothness, but polishing remains the key to success in the final filling process. There are many types of polishing on the market, this indicates that not all dentists use the same type of tools. This study aimed to determine the effect of various types of polishing bur on the surface roughness of nanofiller.Method: The type of research conducted was an experimental laboratory. Cylindrical samples with a total of 40 samples measuring 10 mm x 2 mm were divided into 4 groups. Samples were soaked in distilled water and stored in an incubator for 24 hours at 37oC. The samples were polished using different types of bur except for the control group. Samples were tested for surface roughness using a surface roughness tester and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Result: This study shows differences in the surface roughness of the nanofiller composite after being polished using different types of polishing burs. The results of the one-way ANOVA test indicated that there was a significant difference from the average of the four sample groups. Conclusion: Polishing burs can produce different surface roughness of nanofiller composite.

Abstract

The process of dental demineralization can lead to the dissolution of minerals in hydroxyapatite crystals, increasing interprismatic spaces and decreasing enamel hardness. This demineralization can be inhibited through remineralization, supported by natural ingredients such as brown anchovy, which have potential as remineralizing agents. The remineralization process can be observed through changes in enamel microhardness and microporosity. Objectives: This article aims to provide information about the potential of brown anchovy and its effects on enamel microhardness and microporosity. Conclusion: There is potential of brown anchovy and its benefit in teeth remineralization.
