Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of Majapahit leaf extract (Crescentia cujete L.) on the feeding activity and mortality of the banana leaf roller caterpillar (Erionota thrax L.), and also the optimal concentration that affects the feeding activity and mortality of the banana leaf roller caterpillar (Erionota thrax L.). This research is a completely randomized design (CRD) experiment with 4 treatments and 3 replicates. In thos study, 60 third instar larvae of Erionota thrax L. were taken using the transect method from several villages in Purworejo district, Central Java. The pesticide from Majapahit leaves was made through a simple extraction method with 4 concentrations: 0%, 25%, 30% and 35%. The results showed that Majapahit leaf extract had an effect on feeding activity and mortality of the banana leaf rolling caterpillar. The optimal concentration of Majapahit leaf extract that affects feeding activity and pest mortality was 35%.

Abstract

Indonesia is known for its abundant natural resources, such as gold. However, the mercury-based amalgamation method in illegal gold mining causes environmental pollution. This research explores the potential of utilizing mercury-resistant rhizosphere bacteria from Ageratum conyzoides, a gold hyperaccumulator plant, to develop an effective bioremediation strategy for contaminated gold mining areas. This descriptive-exploratory study aims to identify and determine the sensitivity of mercury in five rhizosphere bacteria isolates from previous research. Bacteria were isolated from the roots of Ageratum conyzoides growing in the Ratatotok gold mining area of North Sulawesi. Bacteria identification was determined using profile-matching methods based on microscopic, macroscopic, physiological, and biochemical features. Similarity Indexes were determined using dendrogram visualization with MVSP software. Mercury sensitivity was analyzed using the cup-plate technique, varying mercury concentrations from 0 ppm to concentrations where clear zones appeared, indicating bacterial growth inhibition. The result indicated that the five isolates were bacteria from the genera Alcaligenes, Pseudomonas, Enterococcus, Streptococcus, and Micrococcus. Notably, Pseudomonas showed the highest potential for mercury resistance, being mercury sensitive at a concentration of 470 ppm, followed by Alcaligenes (110 ppm), Enterococcus (30 ppm), and both Streptococcus and Micrococcus (20 ppm).

Abstract

This study aims to: (1) find out the soil arthropod family found in red chili (Capsicum annum L.) cultivation with trap crop treatment of walnut plants (Tagetes erecta L.). (2) to determine the effect of trap crop treatment of walnut plants (Tagetes erecta L.) on red chili (Capsicum annum L.) cultivation on soil arthropod population dynamics. Data collection was carried out using the pitfall trap method. The population in this study is all soil arthropods found in red chili plantation areas, then the sample from this study is soil arthropods that are trapped in the pitfall trap. This research took place during August 2021-December 2021 with 5 data collections. The data taken included climatic and edapic data on each observation as well as all types of soil arthropods on red chili plantations. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive analysis which included the diversity index, equality index, and dominance index. The results of the study showed that 17 families of soil arthropods were obtained. The population dynamics of soil arthropods in red chili cultivation have changed over time by showing ups and downs in yields. Habitat modification with trap crop of kenikir plants as a treatment did not have a significant effect on the population dynamics of soil arthropods in chili cultivation
