Abstract

Indonesian lacks dedicated logophoric pronouns. Instead, logophoric references are encoded through the use of reflexive pronouns within the discourse context. This study aims to elucidate the relationship between reflexive anaphors and logophoricity in Indonesian. Specifically, it seeks to demonstrate that a particular form, namely the complex reflexive formed by combining diri with possessive pronouns, is exclusively associated with logophoricity. The data for this study was extracted from naturally occurring expressions found in the Leipzig corpora. Analysis was conducted using discourse syntax, which examines the interplay between syntax and the surrounding textual environment, to observe the resulting phenomena. The findings indicate that logophors in Indonesian differ significantly from reflexive anaphors in four key aspects. Firstly, logophoric pronouns, unlike reflexive pronouns, can be bound at a long distance. Nevertheless, they still adhere to the principles of binding theory regarding their antecedents. Secondly, logophoric pronouns may not necessarily agree in phi features with their antecedents. Thirdly, the logophoric anaphor can occupy various grammatical functions, including both object and subject positions. Lastly, unlike reflexivization, logophoric constructions in Indonesian are subject to passivization.

Abstract

The title of this study is “Expressive Illocutionary Act in the Movie Entitled Maleficent”. Based on the problems formulated, this study is aimed at identifying the types of expressive illocutionary acts found in Maleficent movie, and to analyze the context of situation in Maleficent movie. The data was taken from the utterances in the movie entitled Maleficent and explained in descriptive qualitative method. There were two major theories used in conducting this study. The fisrt theory was propsed by Searle (1976) about the types of expressive illocutionary acts. The other theory from Holmes (2013) was applied to explain the context of situation of the utterances. The results of the analysis showed that based on the movie Maleficent, all types of expressive illocutionary act are used by the characters to show certain expression. All data in this study consist of all components of context of situation proposed by Holmes such as the participants, the settings, the topic and the function. Keywords: Speech act, illocutionary acts, types of expressive, context of situation

It aims to find out the methods used by the English teacher at SD Muhammadiyah 2 Denpasar and the obstacles faced by the teacher. This study used the interview method for collecting data. The data was collected through interviewing the English teacher at the sixth grade students of SD Muhammadiyah 2 Denpasar. In addition, the interview was analyzed according to Richards and Rodgers (1986) in the book of Approaches and Methods of Language Teaching. The result of the analysis shows that the teacher uses the combination between audiolingual method and grammar translation method in teaching vocabularies. There were found several obstacles including the lack of students’ pronunciation and the lack of student’s memorization due to the limited time of study in class.

Abstract

Waste is a residual production material that contains substances capable of causing pollution and health disturbances. One of the waste types frequently encountered is cigarette filter waste and wood powder waste, both of which are managed minimally. This research aims to determine the influence of the composition of a mixture of cigarette filter waste and wood powder waste on sound absorption in composite materials. The method involved preparing the necessary tools and materials, then creating composites with fractions (65%, 20%: 10%, 15%), (60%, 20%: 13%, 7%), and (55%, 20%: 15%, 10%). Subsequently, sound absorption testing was conducted using the direct method following ISO 11654 standards. Results from the sound absorption testing at a frequency of 500 Hz showed the highest sound intensity value in the fraction (65%, 20%: 10%, 15%) at 104,833 dBa and the lowest in the fraction (55%, 20%: 15%, 10%) at 93,333 dBa. The highest sound absorption coefficient value was found in the fraction (55%, 20%: 15%, 10%) at 0,202, while the lowest was in the fraction (65%, 20%: 10%, 15%) at 0,104. As the volume of acoustic material from cigarette filter waste and wood powder waste increased, the sound absorption coefficient also increased. The best sound absorption coefficient value was observed in the fraction (55%, 20%: 15%, 10%) at 0,202

Abstract

While many studies have explored passive constructions in Indonesian, there is still a significant gap in research focusing on distinguishing passive clauses and categorizing them into canonical and non-canonical forms. This study aims to address this gap by identifying different types of passive clauses in Indonesian and classifying them into these two categories. The primary objectives are to establish clear criteria for validating the existence of canonical and non-canonical passive forms and to provide evidence supporting their distinction. To achieve these aims, we first analyze markers on Indonesian verbs, particularly the prefixes di-, ter-, and unmarked (zero) forms. The data used for this analysis consists of naturally occurring expressions and clauses sourced from the Leipzig Corpora. This data is examined through the lens of the (non)-canonical theory of passivization. The findings indicate that the di- marker on verbs predominantly signals canonical passive constructions. However, there are cases where the di- form shifts to non-canonical usage, especially when the agent is obligatorily present and cannot be syntactically demoted to an oblique role. In contrast, the ter- form and the unmarked form, which can denote either a bare active (BA) or a bare passive (BP) construction, consistently represent non-canonical passive constructions.

Abstract

F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Ice Palace" remains a seminal work of American literature, delving into themes of identity, cultural displacement, and the search for belonging. This study aims to dissect and analyze the intricate plot structure of "The Ice Palace," employing a qualitative method to uncover deeper insights into Fitzgerald's storytelling techniques and thematic undercurrents. Drawing five essential components of plot, the research scrutinizes each narrative element, tracing the protagonist's journey from exposition to resolution. Utilizing content analysis of the story, the study reveals how Sally Carrol Happer's experience in the Northern environment, particularly her harrowing ordeal in the ice palace, leads to a profound realization of her true self. The resolution, marked by Sally Carrol's decision to return to the South, highlights the thematic emphasis on embracing one's identity and finding fulfillment in authenticity. Through close examination of plot dynamics, this research offers fresh perspectives on Fitzgerald's narrative craftsmanship and thematic resonance in "The Ice Palace."

Abstract

Kakawin Kreṣṇā Pancawiwāha tells the story of Dewi Kresna's marriage to Panca Pandawa, which is interesting to study because the concept of marriage in this text has shifted. The marriage that is supposed to be between a man and a woman is told differently in this text, where a woman marries five men at the same time, known as polyandry. The polyandrous marriage narrated in the Kakawin Kreṣṇā Pancawiwāha text is actually not merely the main purpose, but a symbolic one that has meaning in it. The purpose of this paper is to reveal the symbolic meanings of polyandry that have relevance to Hindu religious teachings. This research is an analytical descriptive research with a textual approach that uses the text of Kakawin Kreṣṇā Pancawiwāha as the main data source. The method used in the data collection stage is literature study with translation, listening, and note-taking techniques. In the analysis stage, the analytical descriptive method was used, assisted by interpretative techniques based on the working principles of semiotic theory. The result found is that the phenomenon of polyandry in the Kakawin Kreṣṇā Pancawiwāha text is a symbol that contains religious philosophical values for Hindus to reflect the teachings of Bhakti (devotion) and Śraddhā (belief). The implementation of the teachings of Bhakti (devotion) is realized by the attitude of Satya Laksana (loyal to the righteous actions) to Guru Rupaka (parents) as a reflection of the teachings of Guru Bhakti. Symbolic polyandry as a concept of Śraddhā, is realized by the reflection of the teachings of Karmaphala Sraddha (belief in the existence of karma) which has a reciprocal relationship with Punarbhawa Sraddha (belief in the existence of repeated births). The mythology found states that polyandry is an existence of life that has implications for the improvement of Bhakti and Śraddhā.
