Abstract

This study is entitled Japanese Clause Relativization Strategy. The purpose of this study is to describe the structure, strategy, and previous functions of relative clauses in Japanese. The theory used in analyzing the formulation of problems related to relative clauses in this study refers to the theory developed by Dixon (2010) in his book entitled "Basic Linguistic Theory 2". This study summarizes the analysis in micro linguistics, namely syntax. Syntactically, the antecedent in the Japanese relative clause is positioned at the end. In Japanese relative clauses, there are no relative markers. Only antecedents that are attached directly to the predicate are part of the relative clause. The function of the relative clause is to explain nouns or noun phrases which in Japanese are called hishuushokumeishi. This research is included in qualitative research. The data analyzed in this study came from the media and publications from the site https://www.sukasuki.org/koran-sukasuki. This study produced several points, including that Japanese relative clauses precede the nouns that are described or known by the previous term. The basic structure of relative clauses in Japanese always begins with a clause that describes and ends with the noun being described. Antecedents in Japanese can be nouns, noun phrases, or particles such as no and koto. There are no conjunctions such as "yang" in Indonesian or "who/which" in English. In this study, pseudo-conjunctions such as ni kan suru and to iu were found. Predicates in Japanese relative clauses can be verbs, verbs conjugated with hojodoushi, nouns, and can also be adjectives.

Abstract

This research is a pragmatic study of the use of negative politeness strategies. This study aims to identify negative politeness strategies used by characters in films and to analyze why characters in films use negative politeness strategies in their speech. This study will use a qualitative method in utilizing the study of negative politeness strategies by describing the problem as clearly as possible. The data will be taken from a film called Charlie's Angels 2019. The theory that will be used in this research is the theory proposed by Brown and Levinson's negative politeness strategy in 1992. The results of this study conclude that there are ten strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson as a way to direct, does not assume or presuppose, and does not force and fulfill the other wishes of the listener. The negative politeness strategy has several sub-strategies that have different goals. They use strategies related to the context of the conversation and the situation.

Abstract

The growth of the beauty industry has led to the increased use of bilingual advertisements to reach a broader audience. However, the differences in cultural and linguistic contexts between the source and target languages of the advertisements often lead to shifts in meaning. In this context, it is the translator's responsibility to act as a bridge to fill this gap. This research aims to identify and analyse the translation techniques used in bilingual beauty product advertisements and to examine how these techniques reflect translation equivalence. This research employs a qualitative method using the theory of translation techniques by Molina and Albir (2002) and the concept of translation equivalence by Nida and Taber (1969). The data were collected from bilingual beauty product advertisements sourced from the official YouTube channel of Maybelline New York. Data were collected through documentation and note-taking techniques and then analysed by comparing English and Indonesian subtitle transcripts to identify the applied translation techniques and the type of equivalence achieved. The results were presented with a formal method through the use of table and informal method to describe the analysis. The findings revealed that eleven out of eighteen translation techniques were used, discursive creation, borrowing, linguistic compression, modulation, amplification, literal translation, linguistic amplification, reduction, transposition, adaptation, and generalization. The application of these techniques primarily achieved dynamic equivalence. Meanwhile, formal equivalence was achieved when the source and target language structures closely aligned.

Abstract

The advances in the movie industry have led to the rapid rise of streaming platforms, becoming increasingly popular among people. With countries around the world constantly producing movies, subtitles play an essential role in making films more accessible to a broader audience. Subtitling strategies can be defined as a translation practice involving the display of written text, usually at the bottom of the screen, to convey the original dialogues of the speakers and the information contained in the soundtrack. This study uses data from the lk21 website and analyzes it using Gottlieb’s subtitling strategies theory, which consists of ten specific methods for audiovisual translation: Expansion, Paraphrase, Transfer, Imitation, Transcription, Deletion, Dislocation, Condensation, Decimation, and Resignation. A descriptive qualitative approach was adopted in this study with observation, classification, and note-taking of each subtitle, suitable for the research, and describing the subtitling strategies applied in the movie. The findings show that seven strategies were applied in the Indonesian subtitles, namely paraphrase, transfer, condensation, imitation, deletion, dislocation, and expansion. Among them, paraphrase emerged as the most frequently used strategy, likely because figurative or culture-specific expressions in the source text often required adaptation to preserve their meaning for Indonesian viewers. On the other hand, expansion was identified as the least applied strategy, suggesting that the original dialogues rarely demanded additional explanation. Overall, the strategic use of these methods contributed to producing subtitles that were coherent, culturally adapted, and highly accessible to the target audience.

Abstract

This research investigates the relationship between phonology and morphology in influencing the changing Balinese speech level, namely ‘singgih’ (high) and ‘sor’ (low). The analysis focuses on utilizing the internal modification of a formal morphological element (root) in Balinese that creates a pattern of alternation apophony for vowel and consonant mutation, which lead to the transformation of speech level. Qualitative data analysis, including internal structure diagrams and observation, is used to analyze the data. There are 54 words found in the data findings using the documentation method from Balinese dictionary. The analysis results are (1) the alternate vowels and the mutation of consonant distinguished the level of the word without changing the meaning; (2) most of the alternation vowels change from [+low, +back] vowel into [+high] vowel, namely umlaut process; (3) the consonant mutation corresponds with the phonological sets of the consonant in initial position or phoneme addition in the middle position. Thus, this study has enriched and enlarged the linguistics documentation for the umlaut and ablaut existence in the Austronesian language.

Abstract

Smartphones are becoming more ingrained in daily life, and the way they are marketed on platforms like YouTube will continue to shape societal attitudes toward technology, progress, and consumerism. This study explores the formation of myths and ideologies in smartphone advertisements from YouTube, utilizing semiotic analysis as its primary framework. The study focuses on two specific smartphone ads from YouTube: the Oppo Reno 12 campaign titled "Unbox The Future," and the Vivo Y28 campaign emphasizing "Endless Battery Life." The study utilizes Barthes' levels of meaning, along with insights from Eco and Lakoff, to reveal the ways in which smartphone advertisements construct and propagate narratives of progress, innovation, and technological superiority, all while embedding these messages within broader ideological and cultural implications of digital marketing in shaping consumer perceptions and behaviours. It calls for further investigation into the long-term cultural impacts of these advertising strategies and their role in reinforcing or challenging existing social norms and values in our increasingly digitized world. In doing so, this study not only contributes to the field of semiotics but also provides a critical lens through which we can examine the cultural power of digital advertising.

Abstract

Typology study of Ciacia language (CL) in various linguistic aspects has not beenconducted yet. It is the first study that focus on syntactic typology. Ciacia language is one oflocal languages in Buton Regency, Southeast Sulawesi Province. The study focuses on five mainproblems, they are (1) How is the base construction of verbal clause in CL? (2) How are thepredicate and structure argument constructions of verbal clause in CL, (3) How are the simplepredicate and complex predicate constructions of verbal clause in CL? (4) How are valency andvalency change mechanism of verbal clause construction in CL? (5) How are complex sentenceconstruction and grammatical alliance system?. The oral data of this study is obtained throughrecording and elicitation techniques. Written data is obtained through the previous studies. Thestudy also used synthetic data which is verrified by the informants. The data was analyzed byapportion (distributional) method. The investigation of clause base construction shows that verbal clause construction ofCiacia language is always filled by subject and aspect markers (PS/A) that is affixed to PREDverb. Base structure of verbal clause in CL consists of verbal predicated clause and non-verbalpredicated clause. Non-verbal predicated clause can be constructed through base nominal andadjective categories. Verbal clause predicate can be filled by intransitive base verb, monotransitive base verb, ditransitive base verb, and ambi-transitive base verb.Predication and argument structure of verbal clause construction in CL can be classifiedin to verbal clause: (i) intransitive with one main argument in terms of SUBJ and as A or OBJsystematically; (ii) semi-transitive with one main argument as A/ACT and with the presenceof OBJ argument optionally; (iii) mono-transitive with two main arguments, namely SUBJ asA/ACT with one OBJ argument as UND, (iv) ditransitive with three main arguments, namelySUBJ as A/ACT before PRED and two arguments after PRED, in terms of OTL (indirectobject) and OL (direct object); and (v) ambi-transitive with one main argument, namelySUBJ, either as Sa or as So.Valency and transitivity of verbal clause construction in CL consists of (i) valency andintransitive verb transitivity with one argument or verb with one valency; (ii) semi-transitiveverb with one argument before verb and the presence of argument after Pred verb optionally;(iii) transitive with the obligatory of O presence after Pred verb, so it has two main arguments orverb that has two valency arguments, namely S and O; (iv) ditransitive with three main arguments or verb that has three valency arguments; (v) ambi-transitive with only one argumentor verb that has one valency.Verbal clause construction in CL can be filled by simple Pred verb and complex Predverb. Simple predicate is created by base verb/intransitive verb and non-verb category, semi-transitive verb, and transitive verb with PS/A. Complex predicate is created through verb (i)intransitive; (ii) semi-transitive verb; and (iii) transitive integral verb. The valency changemechanism of verbal clause construction in CL can be done through formal causativation andsemantic causativation, applicative, and resultative.
