Abstract

ABSTRACT Introduction: Kynurenine pathway is a process that breaks down tryptophan, an amino acid found in many foods. One of the products of this pathway is kynurenine, which has been shown to affect the immune system.Acute and resistance exercise can alter the kynurenine pathway and enhance immune function by modifying immune cell mediators. Methods: This systematic review analyzed the effects of acute and resistance exercise on the kynurenine pathway and immune system. The study collected information through a computerized publication database search using specific text words and MeSH-Terms, limited to original articles published in English between 2016-2021. Results: From 10 clinical trials were summarized Exercise influences the kynurenine pathway and immune system, according to three studies acute and chronic endurance training in healthy patients resulted in higher kyn clearance and lower kyn levels. And two studies through a reduction in kyn levels and a downregulation of the kynurenine tryptophan ratio, cancer patients can modify their immune systems. Meanwhile one study had no effect on kyn levels in depressed patients who had undergone both short-term and long-term endurance and strength training. One study had increased their levels of kyn and their kyn:trp ratio. One study examined the short-term impacts of resistance and endurance training found that both types of exercise increased the expression of increase in CD3+ lymphocytes after both EE and RE and an increase in PD-1+ CD8+ T-cells after EE. Proportions of T-cell populations changed only after EE but without explicitly examining metabolites of the kynurenine pathway. Conclusion: By changing immune cell mediators, endurance exercise (EE) and resistance exercise (RE) can affect the kynurenine pathway and improve immunological function. Exercise therapies can result in cancer patients having lower levels of kynurenine and higher levels of tryptophan and kynurenic acid, both of which are linked to enhanced immune function and decreased inflammation. According to this research, exercise can be a non-pharmacological intervention to improve immune function and possibly prevent chronic illnesses linked to inflammation and immunological dysfunction. Abstract

Osteoporosis is one of the many signs of aging. Physical activities has been known as the best non-pharmacology treatment for osteoporosis as resistance training can stimulate and maintain bone gain. Bone mineral density (BMD) is usually used as the parameter to evaluate bone quality since BMD is used for osteoporosis diagnosis. But, trabecular bone score (TBS) is a far more superior parameter in evaluating bone quality. Regrettably, there is a scarcity of research on this topic, as the majority of studies utilize BMD as the parameter for assessing bone quality. This literature review aims to provide data about the effect of resistance training on TBS for better early prediction and prevention of morbidity and mortality caused by osteoporosis-related fractures. The study searches for articles published in the last 10 years in English or French discussing resistance training and TBS. Five studies are included, which consist of 3 experimental studies and 2 case-control studies. The results suggest that resistance training can stimulate and maintain bone gain, which is superior to non-weight-bearing exercise. TBS has been found to be a more accurate predictor of fracture risk compared to BMD alone. Overall, the literature review suggests that resistance training may improve TBS and prevent osteoporosis-related fractures. Based on Frost's mechanostat theory, bone mechanical properties can be significantly enhanced through high strain generated during physical activity. Nevertheless, the bone's adaptive response to resistance exercise is typically specific to the trained site, which means that only the region exercised will exhibit greater bone mineral density.

Abstract

Androgenic alopecia is a common cause of thinning hair whose prevalence increases with age and aging. The incidence of alopecia is also related to genetic and non-genetic factors, including exercise, although research is still limited. Therefore, this literature review was organized to examine the relationship between androgenic alopecia and exercise in more detail. An article search was conducted in five electronic journal databases (Google Scholar, PubMed, ScienceDirect, MEDLINE, and EMBASE) to find scientific articles on the relationship between exercise and androgenic alopecia published within the last ten years (2013-2023), without language restrictions, with criteria inclusion as follows: 1) respondents with androgenic alopecia; 2) an explanation of the relationship between exercise and androgenic alopecia; and 3) description of the effect of intensity, frequency, and form of exercise on the incidence of androgenic alopecia. In total, there were two cross-sectional studies used in this literature review. This study found that an increase in the frequency of low-intensity exercise in the group with or without a family history of androgenic alopecia increased the proportion. However, progressivity can be reduced, and symptom improvement can occur in the group that does any exercise lasting more than 60 minutes with a frequency of 5-7 times per week, so this exercise method can be recommended. Thus, this literature review has answered that there is a relationship between exercise and the incidence of androgenic alopecia, which can increase or decrease the progression and symptoms depending on the type, intensity, duration, and frequency of exercise. Keywords: aging; androgenic alopecia; exercise; progressivity

Abstract

Background and purpose: Students’ physical activity levels decreased significantly after college enrollment. Disruption during the COVID-19 pandemic also affects the students’ exercise level. The psychological aspect and the academic situation of medical students could interact with pandemic disruption differently compared to other students. This study compares exercise behaviour and its determinant factors among medical students before and during the pandemic. Methods: This study was conducted by collecting data in August 2021 and then comparing it to our data collected in July 2011. Participants were determined by a proportional random sampling based on gender and education year. There were 127 and 205 research participants in 2011 and 2021. The exercise behaviour and determinant factors were based on the Transtheory Model of behavioural change and grouped into five stages of exercise levels and four categories of factors. The data were analyzed descriptively and comparison tested for the two years. Results: This study showed a significant increase in exercise behaviour among medical students during the pandemic (p<0.05). The number of students in the pre-contemplation, contemplation, and preparation stages has decreased, and those in action and maintenance stages doubled compared to the pre-pandemic period. The change in exercise behaviour showed that changes only occurred in female and clinical-year students (p<0.05). There was no significant change in male and pre-clinical medical students. Predisposing, enabling, and maintenance factors are determinants of exercise behaviour that increased significantly during the pandemic (p<0.05), and personal factors did not increase significantly. Conclusion: Female and clinical-year medical students’ exercise activity increased significantly during the pandemic. Predisposing, enabling, and maintenance factors also increased substantially during the pandemic, while personal factors did not change significantly. Gender-related psychological and behavioural reactions to COVID-19 pandemic disruption explain these results.
