Abstract

Before Hasbi ash-Shiddieqy, Indonesian fiqh was predominantly characterized by a rigid and blind imitation (taqlid) rigidly adopting interpretations from Islamic schools in regions such as the Hijaz, Egypt, and India. These foreign teachings often lacked relevance to Indonesia's cultural context, causing friction between Islamic jurisprudence and local customary law (hukum adat). In response, Hasbi developed an Indonesian fiqh that integrated local traditions, aligning with the national motto Bhineka Tunggal Ika, which UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres praised as crucial for a harmonious future in Southeast Asia. This approach fosters unity through the respectful recognition of cultural diversity. This study explores how sustaining Bhineka Tunggal Ika can be achieved through religious moderation based on Indonesian fiqh, particularly focusing on Hasbi ash-Shiddieqy. Employing qualitative research, the study utilized a literature review and thematic content analysis through four steps: data collection (gathering relevant information), data reduction (filtering out irrelevant data), data display (visually organizing key themes), and inference (synthesising findings to address research questions). This study reveal that Hasbi ash-Shiddieqy's Indonesian fiqh approach strengthens religious moderation by integrating universal Islamic principles with local traditions and promoting peaceful conflict resolution, while being consistent with national regulations-Presidential Regulation 58/2023 and Minister of Religion Regulation 3/2024-that promote unity in diversity and foster social cohesion in Indonesia. Therefore, Hasbi ash-Shiddieqy's Indonesian fiqh modernizes Islamic law by integrating maslahah (public welfare) and urf (cultural practices), moving beyond rigid taqlid, and deserves recognition as a vital source for strengthening religious moderation and sustaining Bhineka Tunggal Ika in Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the legality of using ChatGPT in education from the perspective of the Muslim community, focusing on ethics, Islamic law, and Islamic values. Since the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the early 2020s, public debates on AI have generated both support and criticism. Western scholars such as Kelly Ann Allen, Joseph A. Crawford, and Ricky Acanto argue that AI significantly contributes to enhancing learning, personalizing instruction, and managing resources. However, concerns have arisen regarding the negative impacts of AI, such as cheating and plagiarism. Islam, as a timelessly relevant religion, offers wise solutions to these issues. This empirical study employs a literature review approach using the Systematic Quantitative Literature Review method to map the dynamics of the AI ChatGPT discussion among scholars. This study adheres to Miles and Huberman’s three stages of data analysis: data display, reduction, and conclusion. The research findings indicate that internalizing the values of Wasathiyyah is crucial for developing a broad perspective on societal acceptance of AI ChatGPTs. Religious moderation emphasizes that Islam does not reject AI, but rather emphasizes the importance of mitigating its negative effects. With proportional policies, AI is expected to collaborate with humans to accelerate civilization forward.

Abstract

This study examines the crucial role of Hadith Ahad in Islamic teachings, both in matters of faith (aqidah) and other aspects. If Hadith Ahad cannot be used as a proof (hujjah), many Islamic teachings understood and believed by the majority of Muslims would be displaced. This consequence highlights the importance of understanding and accepting the authority of Hadith Ahad in maintaining the continuity and integrity of Islamic teachings. Rejection of Hadith Ahad would have a broad impact on the understanding and beliefs of the Muslim community. The Mu’tazilah and Jahmiyah are groups that understand religious sources by prioritizing reason, which naturally leads to differences with other groups. This study covers the definition of Hadith Ahad and its authority, the Mu’tazilah and Jahmiyah sects' rejection of Hadith Ahad, and discusses the modern scholars' rejection of Hadith Ahad, especially in the establishment of faith (aqidah).

Abstract

This study seeks to explore the commitment of hadith scholars to the Companions and influential figures among the tabi'in during the first century of the Islamic calendar through the process of codifying and transmitting hadith. Hadith represents a primary source of Islamic teachings following the Quran, and its codification is crucial for preserving the integrity and authenticity of Islamic doctrines. During the early period of Islam, the Prophet's companions and the tabi'in played pivotal roles in disseminating and safeguarding hadith traditions. This study employs a qualitative approach using a descriptive-historical analysis method, drawing on primary sources such as Ashfahani's Hilyatul Auliya hadith compilation, writings of earlier scholars, and secondary sources including books, scholarly articles, and journals. The findings of the research indicate that the companions of Prophet Muhammad demonstrated significant commitment in memorizing, compiling, and transmitting hadith traditions. They employed diverse strategies to guarantee the precision and trustworthiness of the hadiths they transmitted. Similarly, the leaders among the tabi'in, as the succeeding generation, persisted in this endeavor by stressing the significance of verifying and authenticating hadiths until the compilation of collections of hadith books (tadwin/codification). They developed a more systematic methodology in the codification of hadith, which became the basis for the development of hadith science in subsequent periods. This research provides a deeper understanding of the history of hadith codification and the important role of the companions and tabi'in in this effort, as well as highlighting the importance of the methodology used to maintain the purity of hadith.

Abstract

This article explores the crucial role of Madrasah Hadis in the development of Islamic studies as an institution that successfully integrates traditional values with innovative elements. As the second source of Islamic law after the Qur'an, Hadith plays a central role in guiding Muslims both spiritually and practically. Madrasah Hadis functions not only as a center for the education and study of Hadith but also as an intellectual gathering place where scholars and students exchange ideas on the application of Hadith in everyday life. The historical development of Madrasah Hadis reflects the transition from oral tradition to the systematic collection and codification of Hadith, with significant contributions from prominent scholars such as Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim. In the digital age, these madrasahs continue to evolve by utilizing technology to expand access to Hadith education, ensuring that Islamic teachings remain relevant within the modern social and cultural dynamics. This article highlights the importance of Madrasah Hadis as a bridge between the scholarly heritage of Islam and the challenges of the present era.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the normative potential of hadiths in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim in strengthening gender equality within Islam. The research is motivated by the persistence of patriarchal interpretations that often marginalize women from public life, thereby necessitating a more just and contextual reinterpretation. Employing a qualitative design through library research, the study examines hadith texts alongside classical and contemporary scholarly interpretations. Data analysis follows Miles and Huberman’s framework of reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. The findings identify six major themes on gender: prohibition of gender impersonation, the Prophet’s  exhortation to treat women kindly, the virtue of raising daughters, prioritizing mothers over fathers, the ethics of patience in marital relations, and the Prophet’s  role model in domestic life, education, and leadership. Classical interpretations emphasize moral and spiritual dimensions, while contemporary scholars extend the discourse toward social-political equality and patriarchal deconstruction. The study’s implications highlight hadith as a normative basis for advancing gender equality in education, family, and leadership within contemporary Muslim societies. The originality of this research lies in its integration of hadith analysis with modern gender theories (Judith Butler, Amina Wadud, and maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah), offering a novel framework for Islamic and gender studies.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the perspectives of sociologists and hadith scholars on the practice of interfaith marriage in Indonesia, as well as to evaluate the social and religious impacts of the interaction between these two perspectives within the context of a Muslim society that is plural yet tends to be legally conservative in religious matters. This research is significant because interfaith marriage frequently generates dissonance between the constitutional rights of citizens and shar‘i norms, while also serving as a site of value negotiation amid the increasing intensity of interreligious interactions. The method employed is descriptive qualitative research using a sociology of hadith approach, combining an analysis of both classical and contemporary hadith literature with theories of the sociology of religion. Data were collected through a literature review encompassing hadith collections, exegetical and jurisprudential works of scholars, academic publications, as well as legal and policy reports. Data analysis was conducted using thematic content analysis, hermeneutics, and comparative analysis in order to identify points of convergence and divergence between sociological and normative-hadith perspectives. The findings reveal that the sociological perspective positions interfaith marriage as a complex social phenomenon—closely related to social integration, identity negotiation, and value conflicts—whereas the hadith perspective emphasizes the preservation of faith, household stability, and protection of lineage, with only limited and conditional space for permissibility. The interaction between these perspectives produces multidimensional effects, ranging from social resistance and the marginalization of couples to the creation of interfaith dialogue spaces within inclusive urban communities. The implications of this research lie in the need for policies that bridge religious norms and positive law, including through interfaith dialogue, public education, and pastoral guidance for interfaith families. The originality of this study lies in its integration of sociological analysis with hadith studies to contextualize the issue of interfaith marriage, offering an analytical framework that connects religious texts with socio-historical dynamics, and providing practical contributions for policy development in plural societies.

Abstract

This study examines the historical development of hadith, the characteristics of hadith schools, and the driving and inhibiting factors of its dissemination in three major centers of Islamic civilization: Basrah, Kufah, and Syam. Employing a historical-critical approach, data were collected through literature studies of primary and secondary sources and analyzed using a descriptive-analytical method. The findings reveal that Basrah is known for its rationalist methodology, Kufah excels in the tradition of transmission criticism, while Syam demonstrates a synthesis of traditionalist approaches and extensive hadith dissemination practices. However, political conflicts, sectarian differences, and limited access to scholars are the primary obstacles to hadith development in these regions. These findings underscore the importance of an integrative approach in hadith studies, harmonizing traditional and modern methods to better understand the legacy of Islamic scholarship. This research also encourages cross-regional and periodical studies to enrich comprehensive insights into hadith history, offering a fresh perspective for contemporary Islamic studies.
