Abstract

Critical thinking has become a fundamental competency in twenty-first-century education and must be carefully cultivated and assessed within biology instruction, particularly in topics related to the human reproductive system. Accordingly, the availability of valid and reliable assessment instruments is essential to ensure accurate measurement of students’ critical thinking skills. This study aimed to develop and evaluate the feasibility of an instrument designed to measure critical thinking in the context of human reproductive system content, with emphasis on empirical validity and reliability. A quantitative approach with a descriptive research design was employed in this study, involving 24 students from class XII.3 at SMA Negeri 6 Tanjungpinang. Data were collected using a test instrument consisting of 12 essay items constructed based on Ennis’s critical thinking indicators. Empirical validity was examined using the product–moment correlation technique, while reliability was determined through Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient with the assistance of SPSS software. The findings revealed that 10 of the 12 items met the criteria for empirical validity, whereas 2 items were deemed invalid. The reliability analysis produced a Cronbach’s Alpha value of 0.799, indicating a high level of internal consistency. These results suggest that the developed instrument is appropriate and dependable for assessing senior high school students’ critical thinking skills on the topic of the human reproductive system.

Abstract

Education is a comprehensive process that encompasses guidance, development, regulation, supervision, and the transmission of values from educators to learners. Learning media refer to any tools or resources employed to convey instructional messages in ways that stimulate students’ thinking, emotions, attention, and motivation, thereby facilitating a structured, goal-directed, and well-managed learning experience. This study aims to develop a simple teaching aid on the human circulatory system for eleventh-grade students using readily available materials, while ensuring its validity as an instructional medium. The research adopted three of the five stages of the ADDIE development model—Analysis, Design, and Development. The study did not proceed to the implementation phase; instead, it focused on the development stage, particularly validity testing. Data were collected through interviews, classroom observations, and questionnaire distribution. The analysis combined quantitative methods, involving percentage score calculations, with qualitative evaluation derived from validators’ feedback and recommendations. The findings indicate that students require visually engaging instructional media that are practical to use and aligned with the expectations of the Merdeka Curriculum. In conclusion, the design phase produced a prototype teaching aid that is considered appropriate for use in biology instruction, demonstrating a very high level of validity and strong potential to enhance the learning process.

Abstract

Communication and collaboration are widely recognized as core competencies within the framework of 21st-century skills, requiring systematic assessment to ensure their effective development in educational settings. However, the availability of empirically validated instruments specifically designed to measure these competencies remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and psychometric quality of observation instruments developed to assess students’ communication and collaboration skills. A descriptive research design employing a quantitative approach was implemented, focusing on validity and reliability testing. The communication skills instrument consisted of 11 items, while the collaboration skills instrument comprised 27 items. The instruments were administered to 136 students. Item validity was examined using Pearson’s product moment correlation analysis at a significance level of a = 0.05 (r-table = 0.1672). Reliability testing was conducted using Cronbach’s Alpha to determine internal consistency. The results revealed that all 11 items of the communication skills and 20 items of the collaboration skills instrument were confirmed as valid. The reliability analysis demonstrated high internal consistency, with Cronbach’s Alpha coefficients of 0.913 for the communication instrument and 0.951 for the collaboration instrument, both categorized as very high reliability. These findings indicate that the developed instruments possess strong psychometric properties and are suitable for use in assessing students’ communication and collaboration competencies. The study contributes to the provision of validated observational tools that support objective evaluation practices. Future research is recommended to refine the invalid items and extend validation procedures across diverse educational contexts to enhance generalizability and robustness.

Abstract

Integrating NOS into digital media is important for understanding abstract biological concepts and promoting scientific literacy. This study aimed to develop a Powtoon-based learning video integrated with the Nature of Science (NOS) on cell material for eighth-grade junior high school students and to determine the validity of the developed product. Previous research has developed Powtoon-based learning videos, but the integration of NOS into cell-related learning media remains limited. Therefore, this study offers a novel approach by developing NOS-integrated Powtoon videos to aid understanding of abstract cell concepts. This study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach adapted from the ADDIE model, focusing on the analysis, design, and development stages. In the analysis stage, data were collected through teacher interviews, preliminary questionnaires, a literature review, and curriculum and content analyses using checklist sheets. Students' needs and characteristics were also identified through questionnaires. During development, the product was evaluated through expert validation by material and media experts using Likert-scale instruments. The data were analyzed quantitatively to determine validity levels and qualitatively based on feedback and suggestions from validators. Quantitative data were analyzed using percentage feasibility analysis based on expert validation scores, while qualitative data were analyzed descriptively through validator input and suggestions. Results showed that the developed learning video achieved material validity of 92.96% and media validity of 95.80%, both of which were categorized as very valid. The novelty of this study lies in integrating the NOS approach into a Powtoon-based animated video to support students' understanding of abstract biological concepts. Developed media can help teachers present cell material more visually and support students’ understanding of microscopic concepts and scientific processes. In conclusion, the developed media is considered valid and feasible at the development stage. Further research is recommended to examine its effectiveness in classroom implementation.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze students’ creativity, collaboration, and communication skills in science learning using a descriptive, correlational, and cluster analysis approach. This study used a non-experimental quantitative design involving 109 junior high school students in Tanjungpinang City. Data were collected using essay tests to measure creativity and observation sheets to assess collaboration and communication skills. Descriptive analysis, Spearman rank correlation, and K-means cluster analysis were used to analyze the data. The results showed that students' creativity and communication skills were generally in the moderate category, while collaboration had a relatively higher average score. Correlation analysis revealed no significant relationship between creativity, collaboration, and communication skills, suggesting that these three skills may not necessarily develop simultaneously across students in the present sample. Furthermore, the cluster analysis identifies three possible student profiles based on similarities in student skills, reflecting varying skill combinations and heterogeneity. These results indicate that the 21st-century skills development in science learning remains fragmented and requires more integrated learning strategies. This study provides benefits in designing learning environments where students' skills measured in this study are developed through adaptive and effective learning.

Abstract

Indonesia is one of the largest maritime countries in the world. Learning should be carried out contextually by linking knowledge with contexts relevant to students' daily lives, such as the maritime context. This research is descriptive to determine students' initial understanding of the basic concept of static fluids. This research involved 66 first-year students in biology education as research subjects. The data collection technique used in this research is a test that uses 6 questions that represent the concepts of density, hydrostatic pressure, and buoyant force. Data was analyzed descriptively, quantitatively and qualitatively. The research results show that many students still experience problems understanding the basic concepts of static fluids, including density, hydrostatic pressure, and buoyant force. This indicates the need for implementing learning that can improve students' understanding of basic concepts of static fluid and enable them to link their knowledge with conditions and situations related to the maritime context in their daily lives. One of the effective approaches to address this issue is implementing a problem-based learning model. This study highlights the importance of contextualized general physics instruction to bridge students’ experiential and conceptual understanding, especially in maritime-based learning contexts.
