Abstract

This study aims to develop e-comic-based history learning media on the topic of the Samudra Pasai Kingdom for senior high school students. The urgency of this research lies in the fact that history learning in many schools is still dominated by conventional methods, which often make students less motivated and hinder their ability to engage meaningfully with historical narratives. To address this issue, the Research and Development (R&D) method was employed, adopting the Sugiyono development model that consists of needs analysis, product design, expert validation, and revision. Data were collected through interviews, questionnaires, and classroom observations involving history teachers and tenth-grade students at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Pekalongan. The findings indicate that: (1) existing learning media at the school remain limited in variety and innovation, resulting in students’ difficulties in understanding historical material; (2) the developed e-comics were designed to provide a more engaging summary of content, enriched with relevant illustrations and integrated media elements; and (3) validations by material and media experts confirmed that the e-comics are appropriate and feasible for use in history learning. The study concludes that e-comic media have significant potential to enhance students’ motivation, participation, and comprehension of history lessons, particularly concerning the Samudra Pasai Kingdom, while also fostering the integration of digital technology into history education in schools.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: The rapid expansion of digital technology has fundamentally reshaped adolescents’ social interactions, raising concerns regarding the formation of social attitudes within educational settings. This study aims to examine the interplay between parenting styles and the intensity of social media use in shaping students’ social attitudes at the junior secondary school level. Methodology: Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with students and parents, systematic classroom observations, and documentation analysis, and were validated using data triangulation techniques. Main Findings: The findings reveal that authoritative (democratic) parenting, characterized by a balanced combination of behavioral demands and emotional responsiveness, plays a crucial role in fostering positive social attitudes, including self-regulation, empathy, and collaborative skills. Students raised within a democratic family climate demonstrate internalized moral reasoning, enabling them to maintain socially appropriate behavior without reliance on external supervision. In contrast, excessive social media use is associated with social withdrawal, fragmented attention, and diminished quality of face-to-face interactions in school contexts. High levels of digital engagement were found to displace opportunities for direct interpersonal communication, leading to what can be described as social atrophy and alienation. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study contributes to the literature by highlighting the protective function of authoritative parenting in mitigating the negative social effects of intensive digital media use. The results underscore that the family remains a critical socialization arena in the digital era, capable of strengthening adolescents’ social resilience when supported by effective communication and guided autonomy.

Abstract

Character education in Social Studies is often constrained by textbook-centered instruction, limiting the incorporation of local heritage as a meaningful context for value formation. This study investigates the integration of Tentara Genie Pelajar (TGP) struggle values into local-history-based learning to enhance students’ character development. A qualitative case study design, supported by descriptive statistics, was conducted at SMP Negeri 4 Pare involving four Social Studies teachers and 140 seventh-grade students. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and Likert-scale questionnaires. The analysis employed thematic techniques for qualitative data and descriptive percentages for quantitative responses. The integration of TGP local history positively influenced students’ character development. Approximately 78% of students demonstrated improved understanding of struggle values, 72% exhibited increased cooperative behavior, and 69% showed strengthened nationalism. Key supporting factors included the availability of authentic historical artifacts and high levels of student engagement. However, challenges were identified, particularly the lack of structured instructional modules and limited teacher training in heritage-based pedagogy. The findings highlight the effectiveness of contextualizing Social Studies learning through local history to foster character education. Integrating heritage-based content not only enhances cognitive understanding but also promotes affective and social competencies. Despite implementation challenges, the study provides practical insights for educators and underscores the need for systematic support, including teacher training and curriculum development. Future research should examine comparative contexts and long-term impacts to optimize the sustainability of local-history-based character education.

Abstract

Communities across the globe are grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic by leveraging their local wisdom, and the Buddhist Kampong in Sodong Hamlet is no exception. Buddhist Kampong has experienced minimal COVID-19 exposure, demonstrating a proficient response to the pandemic. However, this success story remains largely unknown to various stakeholders, necessitating comprehensive research to delineate and elucidate the intrinsic value of local wisdom and its assimilation process. Using an ethnographic approach, this two-year research project was carried out in Sodong Hamlet, Gelangkulon, Sampung Ponorogo, East Java, Indonesia. Primary and secondary sources were tapped, with research informants identified as traditional, religious, and community leaders. Data collection encompassed interviews, observations, and document recordings, all analyzed using an interactive model. The findings revealed a distinct value system within the Buddhist Kampong, shaping their approach to COVID-19 mitigation. This value system revolves around the principles of Memayu Hayuning Kulawarga, Memayu Hayuning Sasama, and Memayu Hayuning Bawana, influencing the community’s engagement in check-in rituals, care for sasomo and cooperation, and the restoration of padasan and diyang. The figures embodying this local wisdom guide community members in internalizing customs, religion, and parental teachings. The internalization process unfolds through exemplary habituation, socialization, and the cultivation of moral motivation, empowering citizens to navigate the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic effectively.

Abstract

Abstract This study aims to improve the social skills of Class A students at TK Kartika IV-17 Kota Madiun, who generally still demonstrate low levels of social competence, particularly in the areas of cooperation, communication, sharing, participation, and adaptation. One contributing factor to this low level of social skill is that previous learning activities did not provide sufficient direct and collaborative experiences that enable children to interact optimally. Therefore, this research was conducted to enhance children’s social skills through the implementation of the group experiment method. The study employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design consisting of two cycles, each involving planning, implementation of actions, observation, and reflection. Data were collected through observation and documentation and were analyzed qualitatively to identify improvements in children’s social development. The findings indicate that the group experiment method effectively improved children’s social skills. The total social skill score increased from 134 in the pre-cycle phase (Beginning to Develop) to 190 in Cycle I (Beginning to Develop) and rose significantly to 350 in Cycle II (Developing Very Well). Classically, all 19 children reached the BSH and BSB categories in Cycle II, surpassing the performance indicator of 80%. Thus, the group experiment method proved effective in providing active, collaborative, and meaningful learning experiences that enhance the social skills of Class A students at TK Kartika IV-17 Madiun City.
