Abstract

The objective of the study was to determine the efficacy of the POSSE (Predict, Organize, Search, Summarize, and Evaluate) Strategy in enhancing students' reading comprehension. This study was carried out at the SMP Negeri 1 Toribulu. The research population comprised 66 eighth-grade students. The research used quantitative research, particularly in Quasi-Experimental Design. To get the sample, the researcher employed cluster random sampling. The data was collected using exam items, which included 10 multiple-choice and 5 essay questions. There were pretest and posttest in both groups, and the experimental group received treatment while the control group did not. The results showed the students' mean score of the experimental group (55.64) on the posttest was higher than the score from the control group (31.24) on the posttest. The sig value is calculated using statistical results. With a 2 tailed of 0.0000.05, it can be determined that there is a significant difference in the mean score of pupils' learning outcomes between the POSSE-based learning model and the usual method taught by the teacher.

Abstract

This research aims to find out whether or not the use of Word Games can effectively increase English vocabulary of grade VIII students at SMP Negeri 10 Palu. This research applied a quasi-experimental design that involved two classes, the experimental class and the control class. The sample of this research was the grade VIII students at SMP Negeri 10 Palu; VIII A consisted of 25 students as an experimental class and VIII B consisted of 25 students as a control class were selected by using simple random sampling. The data were collected through pretest and posttest. The data were analyzed by using SPSS application version 29. The result of the mean score in the experimental class on pretest is 53.44 and the control class is 50.08.  The mean score of the posttest in the experimental class is 90.04 and  the control class is 61.12. Independent samples t test showed that the significance is 0.000 and the standard significance is 0.05 which means that the value of significance  is lower than the standard significance (0,0000,05). It can be concluded that the use of Word Games can increase English vocabulary of the grade VIII students.

Abstract

Scaffolding is a teaching method in which teachers provide structured, temporary support to help students develop independent learning skills gradually. In the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL), scaffolding is particularly useful in vocabulary acquisition, especially for young learners who are still building basic language skills. This study aims to find out the effectiveness of the scaffolding method in increasing students’ vocabulary size at MTs Muhammadiyah Al-Haq Palu. Students in grade VIII participated in this research. Two classes were identified as the control and experimental classes in this quasi-experimental research design. The researcher used a pretest and a posttest to collect data. Subsequently, SPSS version 23 was used to analyze the collected data. The result shows that the posttest mean score for students in the experimental class (78.22) was higher than the mean score in the control class (59.56). Furthermore, based on the result of the independence sample t-test, the sig (2 tailed) value (0.001) was lower than 0.05. It indicated that the alternative hypothesis was accepted. Therefore, the scaffolding method can increase the vocabulary size of grade VIII students at MTs Muhammadiyah Al-Haq Palu.

Abstract

Speaking skills are one aspect that needs to be develop in context of language learning. However, there are still many students who have difficulty in mastering this skill, because of the lack of knowledge of vocabulary and grammar, cause a lack of confidence in students when they want to speak English. This study investigates the effectiveness of the storytelling technique in enhancing the speaking skills of eighth-grade students at MTs Muhammadiyah Al-Haq Palu. Addressing the urgent need for engaging and student-centered strategies to improve oral proficiency, this research offers empirical evidence on the value of storytelling in English language learning. A quasi-experimental method was employed using pre-test and post-test procedures in both experimental and control groups. Thirty students were selected through convenience sampling, with fifteen assigned to each group. The experimental group received six sessions of storytelling-based instruction, while the control group learned through conventional methods. Findings reveal a substantial improvement in the experimental group, which achieved a post-test mean score of 69.33, compared to 44.67 in the control group. The novelty of this study lies in demonstrating storytelling as an effective instructional technique within the Indonesian Islamic junior high school context. The results contribute to pedagogical practices by supporting storytelling as a practical approach to improving students’ speaking skills.
