Abstract

The prevalence of increasing of uric acid and blood pressure is high in elderly people. Most of old people who suffer from high uric acid also do suffer from high blood pressure. This will eventually lead to many diseases which may lead to chronic condition or even death. The purpose of this study was to know the prevalence of increasing uric acid and blood pressure in elderly people at Panti Jompo Werdha Tresna in Gianyar Bali. The method of research is cross sectional descriptive observational. The research sample is 20 people which consist of 5 male and 15 female from the Panti Jompo Werdha Tresna in Gianyar Bali who is aged from 60-80 years old. The individual was chosen randomly with their permission.Based on the research we found that the level of uric acid which was high is for 9 person (45%) and 11 person (55%) of them have normal range of uric acid level. The person who suffering from normotension is 9 person (45%), prehypertension is 6 person (30%) and lastly hypertension is only 5 person (25%). The number of population who suffer from hypertension and they also have elevated value of uric acid is 4 person (44.4%). It can be concluded that age was not a risk factor for the increasing level of uric acid and blood pressure because the sample that was very small .Old people should be given proper guidance to a healthy lifestyle. Keywords: uric acid, blood pressure, old people

Abstract

Cholesterol is a type of fat that is found in our blood, which is produced by liver. Hereby this research will be done on elderly in an old folk home called as Panti Jompo Werdha Tresna. The samples that was taken was both female and male, age varies around 60 years old to 80 years old. Blood was taken together with height and weight to make the correlation between all this two variables. The study design for this research is descriptive study. 20 blood samples have been taken. From the data that obtained in the results it is concluded that if the elderly with high body mass index (BMI) tend to have high total cholesterol. Mean serum cholesterol in the study population was 195.25±32.48   mg/dL(>199 mg/dL) in 60% of the investigated men and 53.3% of the investigated women. As a conclusion, in this study found that the prevalence of excess body weight and age is not associated with the prevalence off increasing total cholesterol compare to other studies. Maybe it is because of total population that is taken in this study is very less compare to others. So the results do not really show the prevalence in population. It is advisable to do some research on the elderly with a higher number of samples so that it can represent the condition within population. Keywords: Cholesterol, Body Mass Index, Age

Abstract

Blood glucose also known as blood sugar is the amount of glucose that can be found in the blood. Carbohydrate foods are the main source of energy for the human body. The rise of blood glucose is usually at peak when the individual’s age reach around 50’s as the body function decreases which effects the glucose metabolism and also the elderly body weight. The purpose of this study is to know the prevalence of blood glucose and body mass index in elderly individual. The design of the study is descriptive cross-sectional study. This study was carried out at Panti Werdha Tresna which is located at Jln. Gumitir, Denpasar,Bali. The number of elderly individuals in that old folks house was around 40 which consist of both females and males. The age range was 53-80 years old. A day before the research was carried out the elderly individuals was given informed consent and was asked to fast for at least 8 hours before the blood sample was taken. The amount of blood withdrawn was about 2cc. The results showed that 1 person (4.8%) of male and 3 person (14.3%) of females are overweight while 2 person (9.5 %) females are obese. Total 6 elderly individual with BMI above normal range. For blood glucose more than 100 mg/dL, there are 3 person (60%) males and 12 person (75%) females. The prevalence of high blood glucose is higher in female (75%) compared with male (60%). Based on the results, it can be concluded that the number of samples that has high blood glucose and high BMI is only 2 person (13.3%) of the total samples. It is  suggested that the government could create a program that can reduce morbidity and mortality due to complications of high blood sugar in the elderly individuals. Keywords: blood glucose, body mass index, elderly.

Abstract

Failure of macrophages to phagocytize Mycobacterium tuberculosis causes the release of hydrogen peroxide/peroxide (H2O2) bythe activated macrophages. Neopterin is one of the most important markers in the activated macrophages. Neopterin is a pteridinederivative produced by the activated macrophages through the stimulation of interferon gamma. Increased levels of Neopterin has beenreported in lung tuberculosis. Activation of macrophages is essential to the development of tuberculosis infection that can lead to activepulmonary tuberculosis or latent tuberculosis, in this case is a high-risk for healthy individuals. To determine the differences in serumlevels of Neopterin and H2O2 between patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis and healthy individuals at high risk of pulmonarytuberculosis. A total of 15 patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis and 15 healthy individuals at high risk examination serumNeopterin levels and peroxide (H2O2). Active pulmonary tuberculosis patients when the results of sputum smear examination chest x-raysis obtained positive results. Healthy individuals at high risk when the results of smear examination and chest x-rays is negative. Thelevel of Neopterin was examined using a double antibody sandwich immunoassay with Human neopterin (NEOP) ELISA Kit ® BioassayTechnology Laboratory. The level of peroxide was examined using quantitative colorimetric peroxidedetermination with QuantiChromTMPeroxide Assay Kit (DIOX-250)®. Neopterin serum levels between patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis and healthy individualsat high-risk were analysed by independent samples t-test. H2O2 serum levels between patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis andhealthy individuals at high-risk were analysed with Mann Whitney Test. The confidence level is p <0.05. The mean Neopterin levelsin patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis was 5.17±4.64 nmol/L, the mean Neopterin levels in group of healthy individuals athigh risk was 3.97±1.79 nmol/L. Statistical analysis by the independent samples t-test found no significant differences between groupsin Neopterin serum levels of patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis and healthy individuals at high risk (p=0.357). The meanserum levels of H2O2 of group of patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis was 26.38±3.00 μM, the mean levels of H2O2of group ofhealthy individuals at high risk of 20.69±4.46 μM. Statistical analysis with non-parametric Mann-Whitney Test was found significantdifference in the peroxide (H2O2) levels between groups of patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis and group of healthy individualat high-risk (p=0.000). The levels of Neopterin in patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis was not significantly higher comparedto the healthy individuals of high risk. Levels of peroxide (H2O2) serum in patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis was significantlyhigher compared to the group of healthy individuals at high risk. This shows that there is increased activity of macrophages in patientswith active pulmonary tuberculosis, but not effective in eliminating of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Abstract

Introduction. Wound healing is a complex biological process involving four stages, i.e., hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. In the proliferation phase, there is an increase in the number of fibroblas cells. Morinda citrifolia is a fruit that contains the antioxidant compound, Quercetin. These antioxidant properties are thought to be able to accelerate the process of wound healing through the process of modulating the oxidative process and improving skin microstructure. The relationship of Quercetin to fibroblas cells which plays an essential role in the proliferation phase is not yet fully known. This study was conducted to determine the effect of Morinda citrifolia extracts on the number of fibroblas cells during the process of wound healing in Wistar rats.Method. Experimental, post-test with control group study was conducted using 24 rats divided into four groups. In group I, rats were treated with incisions and given a Placebo cream, groups II, III and IV were given incisions and cream containing ethanol extract of Morinda citrifolia 5%, 10%, and 20% respectively. The number of fibroblass was calculated using the digital analysis method using Image Raster 3 Software. The number of fibroblas cells was calculated as the percentage of fibroblas cells seen in the field of view. Data analysis conducted with the One-Way ANOVA and Post-Hoc LSD test.Results. The control group had an average number of fibroblas cells 23.3% ± 1.9%. The mean fibroblas cells in the intervention group with extracts of 5%, 10%, 20% were 27.6% ± 6.7%, 38.3% ± 8.8% and 22.3% ± 2.7%, respectively. The ANOVA test results showed a significant difference in the number of fibroblass between treatment groups (p<0.001). Post-hoc LSD test shown that only the treatment group with 10% extract showed a difference in the average number of fibroblas cells compared to the other groups.Conclusion. The highest number of fibroblas cells was found in the treatment group with 10% extract.
