Abstract

Background: Ultraviolet B (UV-B) rays exposure is a leading cause of sunburn, skin dryness and skin aging by influencing the dermal elastic fibers. This photoaging effect was caused by damage of fibrillin-1 as a microfibrillar network. This study aims to evaluate the effect of red-cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata f. rubra) ethanolic extract in cream preparation on dermis-elastic fibers thickness in male Wistar rats after UV-B exposure.Methods: A randomized post-test only control group design was conducted among 25 male Wistar rats during 2 weeks. They were divided into 5 groups as follows: control group (P1), basic cream (P2), 5% ethanolic extract of red cabbage cream (P3), 10% ethanolic extract of red cabbage cream (P4), and 20% ethanolic extract of red cabbage cream (P5). The UV-B dosage used are 325 mJ/cm2 among groups prior to study. The dermis-elastic fiber thickness was assessed by Image Raster software. Statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS version 20 in measuring normality test, mean, and ANOVAResults: There was a statistically significant difference of dermal-elastic fibers thickness among groups (P < 0.05). The mean of dermis-elastic fiber thickness was 6.125±0.376 µm in P5 group, followed by 4.075±0.266 µm in P4 group, and 3.114±0.290 µm, 2.109±0.420 µm, and 1.907±0.454 µm in P3, P2, and P1 group respectively.Conclusion: Ethanolic extract of red-cabbage in a different dose of cream preparation have a statistically significant difference on the dermis-elastic fibers thickness after UV-B exposure

Abstract

Introduction. Wound healing is a complex biological process involving four stages, i.e., hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. In the proliferation phase, there is an increase in the number of fibroblas cells. Morinda citrifolia is a fruit that contains the antioxidant compound, Quercetin. These antioxidant properties are thought to be able to accelerate the process of wound healing through the process of modulating the oxidative process and improving skin microstructure. The relationship of Quercetin to fibroblas cells which plays an essential role in the proliferation phase is not yet fully known. This study was conducted to determine the effect of Morinda citrifolia extracts on the number of fibroblas cells during the process of wound healing in Wistar rats.Method. Experimental, post-test with control group study was conducted using 24 rats divided into four groups. In group I, rats were treated with incisions and given a Placebo cream, groups II, III and IV were given incisions and cream containing ethanol extract of Morinda citrifolia 5%, 10%, and 20% respectively. The number of fibroblass was calculated using the digital analysis method using Image Raster 3 Software. The number of fibroblas cells was calculated as the percentage of fibroblas cells seen in the field of view. Data analysis conducted with the One-Way ANOVA and Post-Hoc LSD test.Results. The control group had an average number of fibroblas cells 23.3% ± 1.9%. The mean fibroblas cells in the intervention group with extracts of 5%, 10%, 20% were 27.6% ± 6.7%, 38.3% ± 8.8% and 22.3% ± 2.7%, respectively. The ANOVA test results showed a significant difference in the number of fibroblass between treatment groups (p<0.001). Post-hoc LSD test shown that only the treatment group with 10% extract showed a difference in the average number of fibroblas cells compared to the other groups.Conclusion. The highest number of fibroblas cells was found in the treatment group with 10% extract.

Abstract

Background: The role of both Euphorbia milii and Propolis is to increase the effectiveness in pathological condition of the body part damaged, include renal function in maintaining the homeostasis. That combination into mice which are infected by Mycobacterium tuberculosis will change the total number of glomerulus in the kidney.Aim: The study aims to determine the effect of combination tea from Euphorbia milii and Propolis on the number of the glomerulus in mice infected by M. tb.Method: This study confirmed randomized post-test only control group design consisting of 24 mice divided into six groups (G1-G6). E. milli flowers are obtained from flower plantations, in Ketewel, Gianyar, Bali Province took in fresh and dark red sampling. M. tuberculosis used H37Rv strain (ATCC27294) grown on Middlebrook 7H9 liquid medium for two weeks.Result: It was found that Group 3 and Group 5 from the treatment group has the most significant average number of glomerulus which was 13, followed by Group 2 and Group 6 from the control group has the largest average number of glomerulus which was 12. The differences were not significant between groups with P = 0.463 (P <0.05).Conclusion: The Euphorbia milii tea and its combination with Propolis does not affect histological change on the total number of glomerulus in mice infected with M. tb.

Abstract

Introduction: High cholesterol levels will cause disease, one of which is cardiovascular disorders or diseases. Based on WHO data in 2012 there were 17.5 million deaths in the world due to cardiovascular disease. Coronary heart occupies the highest position at 42% where one of the most common risk factors is dyslipidemia. This research aimed to evaluate the effect of grape skin extract on plasma MDA level.Methods: This study is an experimental study with a post-test only control group research design. Thirty male Wistar rats aged 2-3 months with a body weight of around 200 grams and healthy, classified into 4 treatment groups and a control group with a high cholesterol diet and administration of different dosages of grape skin extract, dose of 100 mg/175 gbw (gram body weight), 250 mg/175 gbw, and 500 mg/175 gbw. All blood samples were taken on day 30 and an MDA test was performed. Kruskal Wallis test was performed to analyze the correlation.Results: The test results obtained with p<0.05 in the group of rats given grape skin extract at a dose of 100 mg/175 gbw, 250 mg/175 gbw, and 500 mg/175 gbw, thus showing significantly lower MDA levels compared with control group.Conclusion: Administration of grape skin extract to rats given a high cholesterol diet may reduce plasma MDA levels. Latar belakang: Kolesterol yang tinggi di dalam darah akan mengakibatkan berbagai masalah kesehatan, salah satunya adalah gangguan atau penyakit kardiovaskular. Data tahun 2012 terdapat 17,5 juta kematian di dunia karena masalah kardiovaskular. Jantung koroner menduduki posisi tertinggi yaitu 42% dimana salah satu faktor risiko terseringnya adalah dislipidemia. Mengetahui dampak pemberian kulit buah anggur terhadap MDA plasma tikus adalah sasaran penelitian ini.Metode: Sebuah penelitian eksperimental menggunakan metode post-test only diterapkan pada penelitian ini. Tiga puluh tikus wistar jantan, umur 2-3 bulan, berat rerata 200 gram, dan sehat, dikelompokkan ke dalam 1 kelompok kontrol serta 4 kelompok perlakuan dengan diet tinggi kolesterol dan pemberian dosis ekstrak kulit anggur yang berbeda-beda, yaitu dosis 100 mg/175 gbb, 250 mg/175 gbb dan 500 mg/175 gbb. Pada akhir penelitian, yaitu hari ke- 30, semua sampel diambil darahnya kemudian dilakukan uji MDA.Hasil: Uji penelitian dengan Kruskal Wallis memperoleh hasil p=0,035 (p<0,05) pada kelompok tikus yang diberikan ekstrak kulit anggur dengan dosis 100 mg/175 gbb, 250 mg/175 gbb dan 500 mg/175 gbb, sehingga menunjukkan kadar MDA lebih rendah signifikan dibanding dengan kontrol.Simpulan: Pemberian ekstrak kulit buah anggur memiliki dampak penurunan MDA plasma pada tikus dengan diet tinggi kolesterol.

Abstract

Introduction. Indonesia has abundant natural resources that can be used as traditional medicine. For example, Euphorbia milii and Propolis. Euphorbia milii and Propolis have various benefits such as antioxidants, antibacterials, and immunomodulators. The toxic effects of the combination of Euphorbia milii and Propolis on renal function has not been studied. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the combination of Euphorbia milii and Propolis on the kidney function of male Wistar rats.Methods: This study was an experimental analytical study with a randomized post-test only control group design. Twenty-four male rats aged 2-3 months, body weight ± 200 grams were divided into 4 groups, namely; control group (standard feed + aquabidest), P1 (combination of Euphorbia milii and Propolis 40mg/100gram body weight (grbw) for 2 weeks), P2 (combination of Euphorbia milii and Propolis flower 40mg / 100grbw for 4 weeks), and P3 (combination of Euphorbia milii and Propolis flowers 40mg / 100grbw for 6 weeks).Results: Based on data analysis, the mean levels of blood urea nitrogen were not found to be significant between the control group, P2 and P3 from treatment groups, but there was a significant differences between  P1 and the other three groups. The serum creatinine does not show significant difference among all the groups.Conclusion. The combination of Euphorbia milii and Propolis does not increase the the blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine of the Wistar rat.  Latar belakang. Indonesia memiliki kekayaan alam yang berlimpah yang dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai pengobatan tradisional. Misalnya tanaman Euphorbia milii dan Propolis. Euphorbia milii dan Propolis mempunyai beragam manfaat seperti antioksidan, antibakteri, dan imunomodulator. Efek toksik dari teh kombinasi Euphorbia milii dan Propolis terhadap fungsi ginjal belum pernah diteliti sebelumnya. Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk mengetahui efek pemberian teh kombinasi dari bunga Euphorbia milii dan Propolis terhadap fungsi ginjal tikus Wistar jantan.Metode. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian analitik eksperimental dengan rancangan randomized post-test only, control group design. Dua puluh empat tikus wistar jantan berusia 2-3 bulan, berat badan ± 200 gram yang dibagi menjadi 4 kelompok, yaitu; kelompok kontrol (pakan standar + aquabidest), P1 (teh kombinasi bunga Euphorbia milii dan Propolis 40 mg/100 gram berat badan (grbb) selama 2 minggu), P2 (teh kombinasi bunga Euphorbia milii dan Propolis 40mg/100grbb selama 4 minggu), dan P3 (teh kombinasi bunga Euphorbia milii dan Propolis 40mg/100grbb selama 6 minggu).Hasil. Berdasarkan analisis data dari rerata kadar blood urea nitrogen (BUN) tidak ditemukan perbedaan yang signifikan antara kelompok kontrol dengan kelompok perlakuan P2 dan P3. Namun P1 menunjukan rerata yang lebih tinggi daripada kelompok lainnya. Pada kreatinin serum tidak terjadi peningkatan yang signifikan pada keempat kelompok.Simpulan. Pemberian teh kombinasi Euphorbia milii dan Propolis tidak menimbulkan peningkatan yang bermakna terhadap BUN dan kreatinin serum tikus Wistar.

Abstract

Fatigue is a process of decreasing tolerance to physical activities. Metabolism burns energy where it breaks down carbohydrates to become lactic acid which results in fatigue. There are many ways to treat fatigue, such as sports massage. This research will guide the effect of sports massage on decreasing fatigue of Indonesia’s water ski athletes. Research method Treatment by Subject Design. The population of this study were all Indonesian athletes in overall water skiing who were still active in 2019. The subjects of the study were 18 Indonesian athletes of overall water skiing and divided into two different treatment periods. Period 1 was given sports massage treatment and Period 2 was given active rest treatment, between treatments was given a break for 3 days, so the research lasted for 5 days. Lactic acid measurement is measured by taking a blood sample and measured using an accurted lactate tool. Based on the test result, we find that the mean of lactic acid levels before sport massage and after active rest. When viewed from the average difference before and after sport massage treatment can be concluded that the sport massage treatment is more effective in reducing levels of lactic acid compared to active rest. Sport massage and active rest can both reduce levels of lactic acid, but sport massage is more effective than active rest. The suggestion in this study is that the trainers are expected to be able to provide a good recovery method after the athlete has done the exercise.

Abstract

Pemberian antioksidan merupakan salah satu strategi dalam manajemen menopause, karena diketahui bahwa stres oksidatif berkontribusi pada patogenesis penyakit yang terkait dengan menopause. Ubi jalar ungu diketahui memiliki aktivitas antioksidan karena kandungan flavonoidnya terutama antosianin. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengevaluasi aktivitas antioksidan ubi jalar ungu kultivar Bali pada hewan model menopause, yang didahului dengan pengukuran kandungan flavonoid dan antosianin total, serta kapasitas antioksidan. Penelitian dengan rancangan post-test only control group design  ini,  menggunakan 28  ekor tikus Wistar betina yang diovariektomi bilateral. Hewan coba dibagi secara acak menjadi kelompok kontrol (P0), dan kelompok perlakuan (P1, P2, dan P3). Kelompok P1, P2, dan P3 diberi ekstrak etanol ubi jalar ungu (20mg/ml) per oral 7 hari setelah ovariektomi dengan dosis 1 ml, 2 ml, dan 4 ml/hari,  sedangkan P0 diberikan saline 0,9% 1 ml/hari selama 30 hari. Sampel darah diambil untuk pengukuran MDA plasma dengan menggunakan metode reaksi asam tiobarbiturat. Penelitian ini menemukan kadar total flavonoid ekstrak ubi jalar ungu sebesar 676.9 mg/100g, kadar antosianin 56.78 mg/100g, dan kapasitas antioksidan 2516.82 mg/L GAEAC. Hasil analisis data menemukan terjadi penurunan kadar MDA plasma pada P1 (2,431±0,087 mol/L), P2 (2,174±0,096 mol/L), dan P3 (1,886±0,109 mol/L) dibandingkan dengan P0 (2,795± 0,063 mol/L) (p = 0,000). Kesimpulannya, ekstrak etanol ubi jalar ungu dapat menurunkan kadar MDA plasma tikus model menopause

Abstract

Pendahuluan: Cengkih (Syzygium aromaticum) merupakan salah satu tanaman asli yang berasal dari Indonesia. Kandungan utama bunga cengkih adalah eugenol, ?-kariofilen, dan eugenol asetat. Gangguan pada sistem pencernaan atau gastrointestinal merupakan gejala ataupun penyakit yang menyebabkan ketidaknyamanan pada penderitanya, misalnya dispepsia, gastritis, maag, infeksi, konstipasi, perdarahan, ulkus lambung, dan penyakit degeneratif kronis yang dapat disebabkan oleh obat-obatan, minuman beralkolhol, merokok, makanan asam atau lemak tinggi, dan malnutrisi. Pembahasan: Aktivitas antiuklus lambung ekstrak bunga cengkih melalui peningkatan faktor protektif lambung seperti sintesis mukus lambung, bikarbonat, regulasi aliran darah mukosa lambung, serta menghibisi asam lambung. Ekstrak bunga cengkih juga berperan sebagai antioksidan dan antiinflamasi dengan mengurangi sitokin proinflamasi, misalnya IL-1?, IL-6, TNF-?, nitrogen oksida, NF-?B dan meningkatkan antioksidan seluler seperti P450 reduktase, superoksida dismutase, katalase, glutathion peroksida, gluthation, dan thiol non-protein. Aktivitas antimikroba ekstrak bunga cengkih meliputi antibakteri, antivirus, antifungi, dan antiprotozoa. Simpulan: Ekstrak bunga cengkih memiliki berbagai aktivitas biologis, seperti antiulkus lambung, antibakteri, antifungi, antiinflamasi, dan antioksidan. Introduction: Clove (Syzygium aromaticum) is one of Indonesia’s native plant. The main components of clove bud are eugenol, ?-caryophyllene, dan eugenol acetate. Gastrointestinal symptoms or disease can lead to patient feeling uncomfortable. For examples dyspepsia, gastritis, infection, constipation, bleeding, gastric ulcer, and chronic degenerative disease that may be caused by drugs, alcohol, smoking, acidic or fatty foods, and malnutrition. Discussion: Clove bud extract has a lot of biological activities such as, antiulcer, antibacterial, antifungal, antiinflammation, and antioxidant. The methods used for this literature review are from 41 journals and electronic databases search. The antiulcer component of clove bud extract works by increasing the gastric protective factor, such as synthetizing gastric mucous, bicarbonate, regulating gastric mucosal blood flow, and inhibiting gastric acid. Clove bud extract also plays a role as antioxidant and antiinflammation by reducing cytokines proinflammation like IL-1?, IL-6, TNF-?, nitrite oxide, NF-?B and enhancing cellular antioxidant, for example P450 reductase, superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione, thiol non-protein. The microbial activity of clove bud extract includes antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and antiprotozoal. Conclusion: Clove bud extract has several biological activity, such as antiulcer, antimicrobial, antibacterial, antifungal, antiinflammation, and antioxidant.

Abstract

Resistensi obat malaria menyebabkan gejala berat dan kegagalan pengobatan. Untuk mengembangkan obat baru, dilakukan skrining terhadap beberapa tanaman yang berpotensi digunakan sebagai antimalaria. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memilih serta membandingkan aktivitas antimalaria Citrus maxima, Anredera cordifolia, Solanum lycopersicum, kombinasi Solanum lycopersicum-Malus domestica-Daucus carota pada mencit, Mencit Balb c jantan dibagi menjadi enam kelompok (n=5). Tanaman kering diekstraksi dengan cara maserasi menggunakan metanol 80%. Uji selama 4 hari dilakukan untuk memastikan efek antimalaria dari berbagai tanaman tersebut. Setelah diinokulasi dengan Plasmodium berghei, kelompok perlakuan diberi ekstrak sebanyak 1000 mg/kg, sedangkan DHP (Dihydroartemisinine Piperaquine) dan RPMI 5% berperan sebagai kontrol. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan semua ekstrak menunjukkan tingkat parasitemia lebih rendah dibandingkan dengan kontrol negatif. Penelitian ini menunjukkan persentase penekanan parasit sebesar 58.7, 84.3, 77.4, 61.4, dan 83.9 % untuk kombinasi Anredera cordifolia, Citrus maxima, Solanum lycopersicum, Solanum lycopersicum-Malus domestica-Daucus carota dan Dihydroartemisinine Piperaquine. Penekanan parasit tertinggi (84,3%) terdapat pada kelompok yang diberi ekstrak Citrus maxima. Ekstrak buah Citrus Maxima, Anredera Cordifolia, Solanum Lycopersicum-Malus Domestica-Daucus Carota mempunyai aktivitas antimalaria yang berbeda dengan Citrus maxima memilikipotensi terbaik sebagai antimalaria.

Abstract

Introduction: Maintained skin moisture is an indication of healthy skin. Acute UV exposure can cause sunburn, which is characterized by a loss of moisture in the skin. Polyphenol compounds are one practical approach to protecting the skin from sunburn so that skin moisture is maintained. Blueberries are one of the natural ingredients consists of anthocyanin compounds, which are polyphenols from the flavonoid group. Aims: To determine the effect of blueberries on skin moisture exposed to acute ultraviolet rays. Methods: Literature study using references in the form of research articles and literature reviews from national and international journals and related books published in the last 10 years. In writing this literature review, 42 references were used which were accessed through Google Scholar, NCBI, Crossref, and Pubmed. Results: Blueberries anthocyanins can maintain skin moisture from increased transepidermal water loss (TEWL) due to acute UV ray exposure by reducing the formation of UV stimulated reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lipid peroxidation in keratinocyte cells to maintain the elastic modulus and mechanical properties of keratinocytes as well as can prevent sunburn by reducing the skin's modulation of UV exposure. However, the absorption of anthocyanin compounds in the intestine is so low that taking blueberries orally alone is not enough to achieve good biodistribution. Conclusion: Blueberries affect retaining moisture in skin exposed to acute UV rays, so they have the potential to be used as skincare ingredients. However, further research needs to be done, especially to determine the side effects that can be caused and the required extract concentration.
