Abstract

"Temporal Deictic Expressions in the Song Lyrics of Pale Waves’ "My Mind Makes Noises" Album" is the title of this article. This article focused on temporal deictic expressions in "My Mind Makes Noises" song lyrics that have official music videos. This article had two aims: first, to identify the temporal deictic expressions in the album's song lyrics; and second, to explain and analyze the deictic usages of the album's temporal deictic expressions. This article used a qualitative method and content analysis technique to analyze the data, with Huang's pragmatics theory as the grand theory and Halliday's context of situation theory as the supporting theory. The data for this article was gathered through the use of documentation and note-taking method and technique. This article used an informal method and descriptive technique to present the analysis, which means the results were presented in the form of descriptive words and sentences. There were six temporal deictic expressions analyzed in this article, which were then categorized into three categories based on the time of the event using pragmatics method, the context of the situation, and then the deictic usage of each temporal deictic expression. This article demonstrated that gestural deictic usage offers a clearer identification of the time of the event in temporal deictic expression, as well as an easier understanding of the context of situation.

We are obliques to be polite to anyone either in speaking or behave.Somehow we  manage to show politeness in our spoken expression though our intention mightbe not so polite. For example we must appreciate other’s opinion although we have objection towards the opinion. In this study, the analysis of politeness is based on maxim proposes byLeech. The most commonlyuse are approbation maxim and agreement maxim. Key Word : politeness, maxim ABSTRAK Kesantunan dalam komunikasi sangat menarik untuk dikaji, sebab kita telah diajarkan sopan santun sejak kita kecil. Leech membedakan kesantunan menjadi enam kelompok. Abstract

This analysis entitled "Illocutionary Act Performed by Meilin in Turning Red the Movie," aims at determining and analysing the types of illocutionary acts and direct and indirect illocutionary acts performed by Meilin as the main character in "Turning Red." This analysis was based on qualitative research, and data was collected through the documentation method and a note-taking technique. After collecting all relevant data, the data were analysed using the descriptive qualitative method. The data source was the utterances of Meilin, the main character in "Turning Red," the movie. This article analysed the data using the types of illocutionary acts theory proposed by Searle (1979) to categorise and analyse the collected data into five groups: declarations, assertive, expressive, directives, and commissives; and the approach proposed by Yule (1996) to determine and analyse direct and indirect illocutionary acts. Based on the result of the analysis, there were only four types of illocutionary acts used by Meilin in the movie: assertive, directive, commissive, and expressive. Assertive was expressed 17 times, directive was expressed 20 times, commissive appeared 9 times, and expressive appeared 2 times. In this analysis, no declaration acts were found because there were no utterances by Meilin that contained utterances to declare something. Therefore, the analysis also found that direct speech was the type most often expressed by Meilin; it was expressed 25 times, while indirect speech was only expressed 23 times. She mostly expressed her utterances directly because that is the easiest way to communicate with the listener. Keywords: Illocutionary acts, Types of illocutionary acts, Direct and indirect acts

Abstract

This article investigates the complex themes in Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man is Hard to Find" aiming to reveal the narrative's inherent complexity. The main focus is on the central themes of morality and the elusive nature of goodness. O'Connor's extraordinary literary skills, characterized by a distinctive narrative style and technique, are carefully examined to reveal a wide range of characters. Each of these characters grapples with the balance between virtue and moral compromise during what initially seems like an ordinary family trip. At the forefront of this exploration is the grandmother, who is elevated to protagonist status. His flawed moral beliefs and unwavering sense of righteousness become important forces that shape the events that occur. Using a multidimensional analytical approach, this research integrates elements of Southern Gothic literature and religious symbolism to enrich our understanding of O'Connor's storytelling. The findings and discussions section hones in on key themes, including Violence and Grace, Goodness, Punishment and Forgiveness, Familial Conflict and Familial Love, and Moral Decay. The analysis illuminates how the narrative utilizes violence for transformative effects, navigates the ambiguity of goodness, portrays the power of forgiveness amid harsh realities, depicts familial love emerging amidst conflict, and examines perceptions of moral decline. Through such a comprehensive exploration, this study not only deepens our appreciation of O'Connor's thematic choices but also provides insight into the complexity of human nature. This emphasizes the challenges inherent in the pursuit of goodness and moral integrity. The article concludes by highlighting the enduring relevance of “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” encouraging readers to reflect on the timeless themes of morality and the complexity of the human condition
