Abstract

Background: Inadequate quantity and quality of complementary feeding contribute substantially to micronutrient deficiencies, particularly iron, zinc, and calcium. In Indonesia, intake of these micronutrients is frequently suboptimal, and their bioavailability is often compromised by dietary inhibitors, primarily phytate. Objective: This study aimed to compare the in vitro bioavailability of iron, zinc, and calcium from selected locally available animal-and plant-source foods with potential for promotion in complementary feeding among children aged 6–24 months, and to evaluate the effects of pre-processing treatments on micronutrient bioavailability and phytate reduction. Method: A laboratory-based experimental study was conducted to assess the micronutrient bioavailability and phytate content in sticky corn, mung beans, cowpeas, and moringa leaf subjected to soaking (24 h), boiling, and germination (72 h). Bioavailability was analyzed using a solubility-based in vitro digestion model. Anchovy and chicken liver served as animal-source comparators. Result: Pre-processing treatments significantly reduced phytate content in mung beans, cowpeas, and sticky corn (p < 0.001), with germination yielding the greatest reduction. However, desirable calcium bioavailability was not achieved in germinated cowpeas and sticky corn. Anchovy and chicken liver exhibited substantially higher iron, zinc, and calcium bioavailability compared with plant-source foods. Conclusion: Germination of plant-source foods enhances iron, zinc, and calcium bioavailability; however, their bioavailability remains lower than that of animal-source foods. Further studies are needed to determine the optimal animal-to-plant-source food ratios for the development of nutrient-dense complementary foods that meet iron, zinc, and calcium requirements.

Abstract

Introduction: The growing demand for continuous professional development (CPD) within the healthcare sector has emphasized the importance of tailored training for various professional roles, including those of occupational health nurses. In Indonesia, there remains a need to better understand the specific job functions and development needs of nurses working in occupational health settings to ensure effective practice and optimal patient outcomes. Objective: This study was conducted to map out the roles performed by occupational health nurses in Indonesia and to identify key areas where additional training is most needed. Method: A descriptive cross-sectional approach was employed, involving 43 occupational health nurses selected via simple random sampling. Data were gathered using the validated Indonesian adaptation of the Hennessy-Hicks Training Needs Analysis Questionnaire, which evaluates competencies across five domains: research and audit, communication and teamwork, clinical practice, administrative tasks, and leadership or supervisory roles. To determine areas of significant training need, independent t-tests were performed for each questionnaire item. Results: The analysis revealed considerable training requirements in 38 of the assessed items. The domain most urgently requiring development was research and audit, which had the highest mean score (2.07). This was followed by clinical functions and management (both 1.65), mental health and resilience-related skills (1.32), collaboration and communication (1.22), and administrative functions (0.58). Conclusion: The findings point to a clear need for competency-based training initiatives, with particular emphasis on strengthening research and audit capabilities among occupational health nurses. Healthcare institutions in Indonesia are advised to implement structured educational programs alongside continuous evaluation systems to foster professional advancement and maintain high standards of care.

Abstract

Working mothers in Indonesia may influence complementary feeding practices, particularly their ability to ensure that their infants properly meet the minimum acceptable diet (MAD). In this cross-sectional study, an online survey was distributed through various online platforms where participants were recruited using convenience sampling. The questionnaire covered sociodemographic factors, workplace policies, and infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices. Descriptive and logistic regression analyses were conducted. A total of 394 working mothers participated, of which over 90% of the respondents reported meeting minimum dietary diversity, minimum milk frequency, minimum milk feeding frequency, and MAD indicators as assessed with a standardized questionnaire based on the WHO’s IYCF assessment. Multivariate analysis identified two workplace policy variables significantly associated with meeting MAD requirements: physical facility support (AOR: 2.99; 95% CI [1.03, 8.70]; p-value <0.05) and workplace flexibility scores (AOR: 0.18; 95% CI [0.05, 0.65]; p-value <0.05). These findings highlighted the importance of having supportive workplace environments that enable working mothers to ensure that their infants meet MAD requirements. Additionally, the negative association between workplace flexibility and meeting MAD requirements may have been due to the homogeneity of this study’s subjects' characteristics.

Abstract

Kata Kunci: alat ukur, beban kerja mental, interaksi.ABSTRACTNurses in providing nursing care need to interact with clients. Such interaction can be successfullyperformed if the treatment can adapt to mental workload which is manifested into physical, psychological and behavioral symptoms. Objectives: developing a mental workload instrumentwhen interacting with clients in providing nursing care. Methods: It employed a descriptive analyticmethod. The instrument was developed by employing the approach to the interpretation of scaleinterval and ordinal scale which were fi lled by 596 participants and processed through 11 caseprocessing data. The research was conducted in the provinces of West Java, Central Java, WestSumatra and South Sulawesi. Validity and reliability of the perception variables were tested (p=0.996before the interaction and p=0.993 after the interaction), observation (p=0.844 before the interaction,p=0.711), orientation (p=0.711), identifi cation (p=0.769), exploration (p=0.773), resolution (p=0.820),after the interaction (p=0.772), client questionnaire (p=0.64). Results: The results of Con fi rmatoryFactor Analysis (CFA) usingLisrel software indicated p-value=0.150 (p>0.05) and RMSEA=0.075(RMSEA <0.1). Discussion: Regulatory support is needed as an implication for the use of theinstrument. Conclusion: This instrument is valid and reliable to measure mental workload fordiagnostic information. Keywords: instrument, mental workload, interaction.
