Abstract

Abstract: This research was aimed to find out how is the students’ ability in comprehending English reading texts at SMAN 1 XIII Koto Kampar. The design of the research was one class for the try-out test and one class for the real test. The population was the eleventh-grade students of academic 2020/2021. The sample was 25 students of class XI MIPA 2 which were chosen by using a lottery. The data were collected by giving a test with 50 multiple-choice questions. Question number 1-25 deals with descriptive text, and 26-50 was recount text. The result of the data shows that the mean score of the students' ability in comprehending English reading texts is 55.52 which means categorized into the mediocre level. The mean score of the students' ability in comprehending descriptive text is 56.8 and categorized into the mediocre level, the difficult aspect for students in comprehending descriptive text is in identifying reference with the mean score is 53.32 that categorized into mediocre level and the easiest aspect is in finding main idea with the mean score is 65.32 and categorized into good level. In recount text, the researcher found out that the mean score is 54.24 which categorized into mediocre level, the difficult aspect for students in comprehending recount text is in finding social function with the mean score is 44 and categorized into mediocre level. Otherwise, the easiest aspect is in identifying inference with the mean score is 61.32 and categorized into good level.Key Words: Students’ Ability, Reading Comprehension, Descriptive Text, Recount Text

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to find out speaking difficulties faced by the third year students of English Department FKIP Universitas Riau. This research is descriptive research that has one variable. The numbers of sample are 30 students chosen by using proportional sampling techniques. To find the difficulties in speaking of the students, there was a questionnaire used for collecting the data. The questionnaire was adapted from Verapornvanichkul (2011). The questionnaire consists of two aspects; linguistics problems (vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation), and psychological problems (fear of making mistakes, anxiety, shyness, lack of confidence and lack of motivation). The questionnaire was accessed by the students online via Google forms. The questionnaire of this research was presented using 5 point Likert-scale start from strongly agree to strongly disagree. The result showed that every student encounter each difficulties of speaking according to the aspect of linguistics and psychological. The mostly difficulties in speaking faced by the student in linguistic aspects is vocabulary (76.6%) and anxiety as the psychological aspect (82%).Key Words: Analysis, Speaking, Speaking Difficulties

Abstract

Abstract: This research belongs to descriptive research which uses a quantitative approach. The research was aimed to find out the ability of English study program students in identifying noun clauses. The population of this research was the fifth-semester students of the English study program of FKIP Universitas Riau with a total number of population is 110 students. The number of the sample in this research was 36 students, selected by using the cluster random sampling technique. A multiple-choice question test about noun clauses was used as the instrument which consisted of 30 items. There were eleven forms of noun clauses based on the types of each function of noun clauses. The result of the research shows that the mean score of the students in identifying noun clauses was 64. In brief, the English study program students’ ability in identifying noun clauses was categorized into a good level ability.Key Words: Students’ Ability, Identifying, Noun Clauses

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research aimed to find out the ability of English Study Program students in identifying passive voice. The population of the study was the second-year students of the English study program FKIP Universitas Riau. The sample was 39 participants selected by cluster random sampling technique. The instrument of the research was used a multiple-choice test which consists of 30 items. The instrument of the research consists of 6 tenses of passive voices including the simple present tense, present future tense, simple past tense, present perfect tense, present continuous tense, and modals. After calculating by using a quantitative method, students’ ability was highest in the form of simple present tense with a means score of 73.3 and is categorized into a good level and low score in the form of past tense with a means score of 40.5 and is categorized into a poor level. Overall, the result showed that students’ ability in identifying passive voices was at a mediocre level with mean score was 58. The finding implied that the second-year students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau should improve their ability in understanding the formula of passive voices and the kinds of each tense to reach an excellent level.Keyword: Students’ Ability, Identifying, Passive Voices

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to find out what is the learning ability of the second-year students of SMAN 1 Pekanbaru in reading comprehension about descriptive texts, narrative texts, and recount texts. This is descriptive research. The numbers of sample are 72 students chosen by using cluster random sampling. Reading comprehension test were used to collect the data. The data were collected through 42 multiple choice reading test to measure students’ ability in comprehending descriptive, narrative, and recount texts. There were 8 components of reading that used: Factual Information (FI); Main Idea (MI); Guessing Vocabulary (V); Reference (R); Inference (I); Social Functions (SF); Generic Structure (GS); and Language Features (LF). The collected data were analyzed by using SPSS 26.0 and Microsoft Excel 2019. The result shows that the average score is 75.19 with 97.6 as the highest score and 30.9 as the lowest score. Thus, result indicates that the students’ comprehension is at good level.Key Words: Ability, Reading, Comprehension

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to find out whether or not there is significant effect of PENS strategy on students’ ability at SMP IT Madani Pekanbaru in Writing. The research design is a pre-experimental research with one group pre-test and post-test design. The sample was all of students VIII. In order to collect the data, the pre-test and post-test were administered and then the data were statistically analyzed by using the t-test formula. The result showed that the mean score of post-test was higher than mean score of pre-test (67.61 > 59.68). The value of t-test was 11.360 while the value of t-table in significance level 5% df = 34 was 2.032. Since the value of the t-test was higher than t-table, it can be concluded that Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and Null Hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. It means that there was significant effect of PENS strategy on students’ ability in writing at SMP IT Madani Pekanbaru.Key Words: Effect, PENS strategy, Writing Ability

Abstract

Abstract: This quantitative descriptive study aims to find out the students' ability in writing recount text. The sample of this study was 27 students of class VIII 1 MTs Hubbulwathan Duri. This research used cluster random sampling technique. The instrument used written test in which students wrote their own recount text according to a theme that has been determined by the writer. In analyzing the data, it had done by calculating the scores of students individually and looking for the average scores. As for the results obtained from this study, the ability of eighth graders in writing recount text is in the good category with an average of 80.36. The results for each aspect are very good for aspects of content (89.66), organization (91.33), vocabulary (86.66), while good for aspects of grammar (83.66) and mechanics (79.33). Based on these results, it is suggested for students to be able to practice writing skills by frequently reading and writing journals. As for the teacher, it is being able to make recount text writing lessons more fun so that students do not get bored in writing. For the researchers, It is recommended that researchers make this research a reference and can focus more on every aspect of writing, especially in the mechanics aspect.Key words: Writing, Recount Text, Ability, Quantitative

Abstract

Abstract: Translation in non-English speaking countries is important for communication between people with different cultures and languages. To acquire an accurate, clear and natural translation, a translator needs a what is called translation techniques which were proposed by Molina and Albir in 2002. It is a basis in a translation process, which is transferring a written text from the source language to target language. It is in fact the bottom line in this research is entitled „An Analysis of Translation Techniques Used in “The Little Prince” Movie‟s Indonesian Subtitle Text‟. In order to describe it, the writer used the descriptive qualitative approach. Besides, the writer also used the quantitative approach to compile the findings and presenting it in a table with the percentage of each technique‟s frequency. This research finds out there are 16 out of 18 techniques used in this subtitle and the most prominent technique used was the literal translation technique with a frequency of 299, or 28.23% of total data. While the least one was particularization technique which only occurred for 5 times (0.47% of total percentage). The writer also finds out that two of those techniques were not applied by the translator. These are on the ground that the writer could not identify any essential specifications of both techniques. Abstract

Abstract: This research was designed to describe the student’s reading ability in comprehending english legends and aimed to find out the students ability in comprehending English Legends for each component. This research was conducted in SMPN 3 Tambang that has been collected from September to Oktober 2017. The try out class was IX.6 (31 students) and the sample was IX.7 (32 students) chosen by cluster random sampling. The result showed that the ability of the third year students of SMPN 3 Tambang in comprehending English Legend for each component was in good level whose mean score was , however, the students have not passed the minimum score of the school which is 76. For the level of remembering; finding factual information the mean score was 84.38, finding references was 72.9, finding meaning of difficult words was 67.2. The level of understanding (finding restatement) the mean score was 67.19 and for the analyzing level (finding main idea) the mean score was 81.77. Therefore, this research suggests the English teachers to focus on the levels and components that students still find such difficulities that they are into poor level. Students should learn the components in English legend and other text types. Further researchers are expected to find the standard guidance of classification of Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy indicated the components of reading comprehension.Key Words: Student’s Ability, Comprehending, English Legends.

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to finding out whether there is a significant effect of Directed Reding Thingking Activity strategy on the ability of first year students of SMAN 2 Teluk Kuantan in reading comprehension. The research design was a pre-experimental research with one group pre-test and post-test design. The sample was X IS was chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. The result showed that the mean score of post-test (76.00) was higher than mean score of pre-test (70.03). The value of t-test (15.48) was higher than t-table (2.04) at 5% of the significance level. Therefore, Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and Null Hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. It could be concluded that there was a significant effect of Directed Reading Thingking Activity strategy on the ability of first year students of SMAN 2 Teluk Kuantan in reading comprehension.Key Words: Directed Reading Thingking Activity, Reading Comprehension
