Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to find out whether there is a correlationbetween vocabulary mastery and writing ability of the fifth semester students of EnglishDepartment Universitas Riau. The population is the fifth semester students of EnglishDepartment Universitas Riau. The sample was chosen by using cluster randomsampling and class A is used as the sample. Multiple choice test was used to know thestudents' vocabulary mastery and a writing essay test was used to know the studentswriting ability. The collected data were analyzed by using Pearson Product MomentCorrelation. The result of the correlation and coefficient was 0.574, it can be confirmedthat the two variables have a “Mediocre Correlation” based on the interpretation bySugiyono (2017). Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted. In conclusion,there was a positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and writing ability of thefifth semester students of English Department Universitas Riau with mediocre level. Theobtained determination coefficient (R square) is 0.330 or 33%. This means thatvocabulary clarifies only 23% toward writing ability. While the rest 67% (100%-33%)is probably due to other factors which are not involved in this research's variables.Key Words: Correlation, Vocabulary Mastery, Writing Ability

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to find out the ability of the second year students of SMAN 2 Pekanbaru in supplying correct pronouns. The number of population is 260 who are divided into seven classes, they are XI IPA 1, XI IPA 2, XI IPA 3, XI IPA 4, XI IPS 1, XI IPS 2 and XI IPS3. The researcher uses cluster random sampling technique to determine the sample. The samples are 36 students from XI IPA 3. The needed data are taken from the students’ scores in supplying correct pronoun. The test contains 40 questions from four different pronouns, they are personal pronouns, possessive pronouns, reflexive pronouns, and possessive adjectives. The time allocation is 60 minutes. The result of the study shows that the ability of the second year students of SMAN 2 Pekanbaru in supplying correct pronouns is in good level with the mean score is 70.07. The highest mean score (72.22) is in supplying possessive pronouns. The lowest mean score (66.67) is in supplying reflexive pronouns.Key Words: Study, ability, supplying, pronouns

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to identify and describe the students’ perception on using Schoology application in learning English during pandemic Covid-19. The population of this research is the second year students of SMP Cendana Pekanbaru. The number of sample is 44 students selected by using cluster random sampling technique. Data of this research were collected through an online questionnaire using Google form and distributed via WhatsApp Group. The research analyzed by using SPSS Ver.23 and Microsoft Excel then explained descriptively. Based on the results of this research, the students’ perception levels in terms of Students’ Perception on Utilizing Schoology in Learning English during Pandemic Covid-19 (X1) was in very good category (82.8%), Students’ Perception about Benefits of Using Schoology in Learning English during Pandemic Covid-19 (X2) was in good category (76%), Students’ Perception about Challenges on Using Schoology in Learning English during Pandemic Covid-19 (X3) was in mediocre category (58.9%), and Students’ Perception of Satisfaction by Using Schoology in Learning English during Pandemic Covid-19 (X4) was in good category (67%). The results shows the average of all scores in general was in good category (71.18%). It means the students’ positively accepted Schoology as a good application a platform in learning English during pandemic Covid-19. Students’ Perception on Utilizing Schoology in Learning English during Pandemic Covid-19 (X1) has the highest percentage (82.8%) which means that students agree that Schoology is easy to use, Schoology has interesting features that support teaching and learning activities. This study implies that the second year students of SMP Cendana Pekanbaru have a good perception on using Schoology in learning English during pandemic Covid-19.Key Words: Perception, Schoology, Pandemic Covid-19.

Abstract

Abstract: This research aimed to analyse the English receptive skills through the TOEFL score map of the English Study Program Students FKIP Universitas Riau. This research was descriptive quantitative research, with 95 students as the sample. This research used students TOEFL scores that the researcher got from UPT Bahasa Universitas Riau. Analysing students’ TOEFL scores showed that only 55,7% of students had passed the test and students classified as advanced level only 50,5%. Students’ receptive skills, either who passed or failed the TOEFL test, still faced difficulties answering the listening comprehension section questions, especially about short conversations and mini-talks. There is an imbalance in the students’ receptive skills because the students can understand had better in the reading comprehension section than in the listening comprehension section.Key Words: Analysis, Receptive Skills, TOEFL score

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to compared between ability of the first year female and male students of SMK PGRI Pekanbaru in comprehending Narrative texts. The number of population was 213 students divided into seven classes. The writer used cluster random sampling technique to determine the sample. The samples were 28 students. The needed data were taken from the students’ score in comprehending narrative texts. The test comprehends five narrative texts of which all text has six items or 30 items all together. The time allocation was 80 minutes. Based on the research finding, it can be found: first, the ability of the students is in good level. Second, the mean score of female students was higher than mean score of male students (71,17 % > 62%) in comprehending narrative texts. This research finding confirmed the theories that female students are better than male students in language learning. T-test formula proved that the differences of female and male scores were significant statistically.Key Words: Comparative, Ability, Comprehending, Narrative Text

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to find out the significant correlation between students’ grammatical knowledge and the ability in translating Indonesian-English narrative texts by the second year students of SMAN 1 Sentajo Raya. The correlational research was used to find out the relationship between two variables or it called bivariate correlation. To collect the data in this research two tests were used. A simple random sampling technique is used to determine the sample of the research. There were 40 students participating in this research. Narrative text was used to know the students' translation ability and past tenses test was used to know students’ grammatical knowledge. The result of the study shows that the correlation between two variables are significantly correlated. As a means there is a significant a significant correlation between students’ grammatical knowledge and the ability in translating Indonesian-English narrative texts by the second year students of SMAN 1 Sentajo Raya. In other words, there is an influence of students’ grammatical knowledge towards students’ ability in translating Indonesian-English narrative texts. The finding could important distributions to both teaching translation and grammar, especially the relationship between the two variables.Key Words: Correlation, Grammatical Knowledge, Translation

Abstract

Abstract:The aims of this research were to find out the correlation between students’ vocabulary size and students’ TOEFL score. This was a quantitative research with 39 students as a sample. This research used the Vocabulary Size Test to measure the student vocabulary size. This research got the students’ TOEFL score from the UPT Bahasa University of Riau. The result showed that the average of students’ vocabulary sizewas8,215 and the average of students’ TOEFL score is422,1. Thecorrelation value of students’ vocabulary size and students’ TOEFL score is 0,707. It means there is a significant correlation between students’ vocabulary size and students’ TOEFL score and it is categorized as “Strong Correlation” because of the correlation value of students’ vocabulary size and students’ TOEFL score are between 0,60 –0,80.Key Words: Correlation, Vocabulary Size, TOEFL Score.

Abstract

Abstract: This research was aimed at finding out the correlation between listening and speaking ability of the third-semester students of English Department Universitas Riau. The researcher implemented a quantitative correlational research design. The number of the samples is 37 selected by using cluster random sampling (CRS). There were two data obtained in this research; students' listening ability and students' speaking ability. The listening TOEFL test was used to collect data of students' listening ability; while students' speaking ability was measured using IELTS speaking test part II. This study found that r-obtained is 0.526 with a significant level 0.001 which means that there is a significant correlation between listening ability and speaking ability. The value of R square shows that the relationship between listening and speaking ability of the students is 27.6%. In other words, it implies that the higher students' listening ability, the higher speaking ability score of the students might get.Keywords: Correlation, Listening ability, Speaking ability.

Abstract

Abstract: This research was aimed to find out whether there was a significant effect of using realia in teaching writing descriptive text on the writing ability of the second year students of SMPN 2 Tebing Tinggi This is a pre-experimental research conducted by using a pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The instrument used in this research was tests (pre-test and post-test) which contained writing activities in describing objects. The population of this research was the Second Year Students of SMPN 2 Tebing Tinggi. The sample of the research was the class VIII.4 which contains 29 students. The needed data were collected by giving test about writing descriptive text (pre-test and post-test) to the students. The collected data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The results of data analysis showed that the mean score of pretest is 29.88, and the mean score of posttest is 63.74 and the difference between the two mean score is 33.85. Besides that, t-test of this research is 25.758 and t-table of this research is 2.048. It means that the t-test score is higher than t-table (25.758>2.048). It can be concluded that there is significant effect of using realia (real objects) in teaching writing descriptive text on the writing ability of the second year students of SMPN 2 Tebing Tinggi. In other words, the alternative hypothesis of this research was accepted. Thus, the use of real objects can be used as media in teaching writing descriptive texts.Key Words: Real Objects, Writing Ability, Descriptive Text

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to find out the students’ ability in writing a paragraph by the second semester English Department students of Universitas Riau. The population was the second semester English Department students of Universitas Riau, they consisted of three classes: class A, class B, and class C. From 117 students of the population, class A was taken as the sample of this research consist of 39 students. Cluster random sampling was used to choose the sample. The instrument used written test in which students wrote a paragraph. Three topics were provided for students that they can choose to write a paragraph. In analyzing the data,it had been done by calculating the scores of students individually and looking for the mean scores. Based on the result, it was found that the ability of the second semester English Department students in writing a paragraph is in good category with the mean score of 68,3. However, eventhough the students writing scores is in good level, the actual of this score is not that high. This score is considered still low compare to the range from in this level (66-79). There are seven aspects of paragraph writing such as complete sentence, topic sentence, relevant details/supporting sentences, transition word&vocabulary, closing sentence, grammar, and mechanics. After analyzed the data, it was found that two aspects of paragraph writing get in high score in writng a paragraph, they are topic sentence with the mean score of 3,2 and relevant details/supporting sentence with the mean score of 3,1. On the other hand, mechanic aspect of paragraph writing have low score with the mean score of 2,6. Based on this result, it is suggested for students to improve the students’ skill in writing especially for writing paragraph and the students should do more exposure in writing a paragraph. As for the lecturers, it is better to provide more exposure student skill in writing skill by using relevant approaches and techniques to improve students' ability in writing paragraph.Key Words: Writing Paragraph, Study, Ability
