Abstract

Climate change is one of the natural phenomena that has a considerable impact on agriculture. This study aims to find out (1) Clove Plant Productivity in Kramat Village, West Taliabu District, Taliabu Island Regency, North Maluku Province (2) Adaptation Strategies Carried out by Clove Farmers in Kramat Village, West Taliabu District, Taliabu Island Regency, North Maluku Province. The determination of the research location was carried out purely with the consideration that Kramat Village is one of the clove producers that has unstable climatic conditions and threatens the productivity of cloves which is the main source of livelihood for farmers. The number of clove farmer respondents was 36 farmers. The data analysis used was a descriptive-qualitative analysis with a Likert scale. The results of the study showed that the productivity of clove plants in Kramat Village, West Taliabu District, Taliabu Island Regency, was only 106.60 kg/ha/year. This low productivity is caused by climatic variations in high rainfall that occurred in Kramat Village, West Taliabu District with a range of 1811.9-5118.8 mm/year. The adaptation strategies carried out by clove farmers in the face of climate change that occurred in Kramat Village, West Taliabu District, Taliabu Island Regency, are the use of extension services, changes in planting time, the use of fertilizers, the selection of resistant varieties, the clearing of ground cover, the formation of farmer groups to share knowledge, business diversification, the use of more efficient irrigation technology, the application of agroforestry, and the adoption of crop insurance.

Abstract

Introduction: Organic farming has emerged as a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach to food production. However, the adoption of organic farming practices in Indonesia remains slow. Progressive farmers have the potential to act as opinion leaders, accelerating the diffusion of innovations in organic rice farming. This study investigates the role of progressive farmers as opinion leaders in facilitating innovation diffusion for the development of organic paddy fields. Methods: A qualitative research design was employed, utilizing a case study method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, non-participant observations, and document analysis involving 17 participants, including progressive farmers, conventional farmers, and agricultural extension agents engaged in organic rice farming development. Data were analyzed descriptively using the framework of social learning theory. Results: Findings indicate that opinion leaders play a pivotal role as initiators, pioneers, information disseminators, and role models in promoting organic rice farming innovations. Their actions and statements regarding innovations strongly influence farmers' decision-making processes. Conclusion: The study concludes that progressive farmers, as opinion leaders, effectively act as change agents and mentorship by introducing and fostering the adoption of organic farming practices. The shared socio-cultural background between opinion leaders and their communities facilitates intensive interpersonal communication, ensuring that messages are relevant, credible, memorable, and trustworthy, thereby accelerating innovation diffusion. Nevertheless, the study also highlights certain limitations faced by progressive farmers. Strengthening their communication skills and fostering collaborations with agricultural institutions, such as extension agents and organic farming communities, are essential to further expedite the diffusion of organic farming innovations.

Abstract

This research looks at how the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) organic rice growing system affects the well-being of farmers in Baula District, Kolaka Regency. The study looks at income, productivity, production costs, and farmers' views on stakeholder support in order to fill in the gaps in the scant empirical evidence on the socio-economic advantages of SRI-organic practices in Indonesia. We used a quantitative technique using a survey method and comparative descriptive analysis with 56 respondents who were chosen for a specific reason (28 organic SRI farmers and 28 conventional farmers). Farm income computation, the Independent Sample T-Test, and the Likert-scale-based perception analysis were some of the analytical methods used. The results showed that organic SRI farmers earned an average income of Rp125,195,859.00 ha⁻¹ season⁻¹, significantly higher than inorganic farmers (Rp25,874,641 ha season-1). Organic SRI land productivity was recorded at 7,493.16 kg ha-1, more efficient than the inorganic system (6,106.58 kg/ha). Although the production cost of SRI is higher, the economic value is still more profitable due to the higher selling price of organic grain and input efficiency. Farmers' perception of the role of stakeholders is also classified as "high", with an average Likert score of 4.37. They said that training, help with inputs, and access to markets were the most important components, and PT Vale Indonesia, agricultural extension staff, and local government helped make these things happen. These results show how important it is for institutions to work together to improve technical and economic outcomes. This research shows how useful SRI-organic systems may be as a model for community-based, sustainable agriculture that can be scaled up to enhance the lives of people in rural areas.
