Abstract

This study examines the Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) technique for improving students’ English writing skills, specifically in content and organization when focused on writing recount texts. This experimental research used random sampling and random assignment to determine the control group (CG) and the experimental group (EG). Pre- tests, treatment or teaching and post-tests were done to both groups. The study was conducted with 60 second year students from a junior high school in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. Students’ mean scores for the pre-test in the CG were 40.76 and 60.76 for the post-test, meanwhile students’ mean scores for the pre-test in the EG were 40 and 72.69 for the post-test. Thus, the t-test between both groups was 9.39 and the t-table was 2.056 which used 0.05 as the level of significance for this research. Because the t-test value was higher than the t-table (9.39 2.056), Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. Therefore, the CIRC technique can improve the content and organization of students’ writing in doing recount texts. In addition, because students work in groups, they have more opportunity to learn and share their ideas with other students to produce better writing.

Abstract

Acehnese, like other regional languages throughout Indonesia, is in constant and intense contact with Bahasa Indonesia, a lingua franca of Indonesia. Not surprisingly, many Indonesian loanwords are flooding into Acehnese. There are some interesting sound changes affecting both consonants and vowels, phonotactics, and stress. This paper explores the vowel changes occurring in Indonesian loanwords when used within dialects of Acehnese. A list of 285 well-established loanwords was compiled and recorded from native speakers of each of the four main Acehnese dialects (North Aceh, Pidie, Greater Aceh, and West Aceh). The informants were lecturers or postgraduate students and fluent bilingual speakers of both a selected Acehnese dialect and Indonesian. Phonemic transcriptions were compared with their Indonesian correspondences. The results of this study show that the behaviour of the vowels in this list of Indonesian loanwords is not a simple case of phonological assimilation, as usually occurs in loanword phonology, but rather often exhibits phonological dissimilation and must be an expression of Acehnese identity. In particular, the high back unrounded vowel /ɯ/ is a salient Acehnese vowel not found in Indonesian. A wide range of Indonesian vowels is frequently replaced by this vowel, resulting in the loanwords sounding distinctively Acehnese. The conditions when such changes occur are discussed in the paper.

Abstract

The major objective of this research is to analyze the flouting maxims in one of the Indonesian comedy movies, The Guys. This research is focused on identifying the types of flouting maxims and to seek out the reasons behind those flouting performed by Alfi character in the movie. The data for this qualitative research were collected from the utterances produced by character Alfi containing flouting maxims. They were obtained by watching the movie and transcribing the movie script to ensure that no data were accidentally left out. The data was analyzed by classifying the data into types and reasons of flouting maxims, then the researcher verified all the data to ensure that all the data matched and correctly-translated. The results of this research show that character Alfi performed all types of flouting maxims, i.e. quantity, quality, relevance and manner. Flouting maxim of manner is in the highest occurrence and flouting maxim of relevance is in the lowest occurrence. Whereas the reasons that lead character Alfi to flout the maxims are competitive, convivial, collaborative and conflictive. Concerning the reasons of flouting maxims, collaborative reason is in the highest position, and conflictive reason has the lowest position in its occurrence.

Abstract

A prompt can be used as a medium to help students write a descriptive text. There is a lack of research on the type of prompts which can help students formulate and organize their ideas. Therefore, this study aims to determine whether there was a significant difference in the score of idea formulation and organization in a descriptive text between students writing with text prompts and those given a picture prompt. This research was quantitative research with a non-experimental design. The sample consisted of 45 second-grade junior high school students in a public school in Aceh, Indonesia. The data was collected by instructing students to write a descriptive text using a text prompt and another descriptive text using a picture prompt, which was later graded for idea formulation and organization using rubrics. The students’ scores between the two tests were compared using inferential statistics for hypothesis testing at the significance level of 0.05. The findings show that the students obtained significantly higher scores when a picture prompt was used than when they used a text prompt. Picture prompts helped students with an imaginative picture to be interpreted into a descriptive text. The findings help teachers identify which prompt is better when this type of text is a concern. Therefore, it is suggested that teachers use a picture prompt to facilitate students in formulating and organizing ideas in a descriptive text.

Abstract

Classroom management is an essential element of the teaching and learning process which determines the quality of instruction. This research aims to investigate the elements of classroom management which can be effectively applied in EFL classrooms. This study is a review research study, where the data were collected from 43 previously published materials, restricted to books, dissertations, and articles published in academic journal. The data were analysed using data condensation, data display and conclusion drawing. The results of this study show that there are three elements of classroom management, i.e. seating arrangements, engagement, and participation. The seating arrangement has three effective components including u-shaped, sitting in a group, and orderly row. Further, student engagement consists of cognitive, behavioural, academic, emotional, social, intellectual, physiological, affective and relational engagement approaches. Meanwhile, participation includes classroom talk, teacher talk, collaborative talk, exploratory talk, disputational talk, and learner-managed talk. Therefore, it is recommended that teachers utilize effective classroom management components based on the results of this study to improve the quality of instruction.

Abstract

Reduplication in Acehnese serves many functions, such as plurality, reciprocity, emphasis, continuity, and repetitions. This word formation process has been previously analyzed in terms of morphology and phonology. The present study aimed to discover the constraint ordering of reduplication to determine the rules that govern each pattern of reduplication in the language. The study employed Correspondence Theory under the umbrella of Optimality Theory, focusing on total and partial reduplication, leaving out rhyming reduplication due to framework limitation. The results show that all patterns of reduplication in Acehnese follow regular application where well-formedness proceeds faithfulness (MAX-IO) and precedes reduplicative identity (MAX-BR). The well-formedness for total reduplication only includes the constraint of the complex nucleus, where a final diphthong in the base changes to a monophthong in the reduplicant. For partial reduplication, the constraint for well-formedness is that the syllable should be open, preceded by a reduplicant size of no more than one syllable, and alignment (either left for reduplicating prefixes or right for reduplicating suffixes). In addition, the well-formedness is proceeded by no insertion (DEP-BR). This study indicates the need to establish a ranking of constraints that govern the phonology of Acehnese outside the context of reduplication, which is a suggestion for future studies.

Abstract

Regardless of its significance for language learning, the effect of a movie subtitle on vocabulary retention was rarely investigated. This study aimed to compare the impact of the subtitles in the first language (L1, Indonesian) and English as the target language on the learners’ vocabulary retention after watching seven episodes of a movie series. Sixty pre-service English teachers were divided into L1 and English subtitle groups to watch all episodes of the series in three non-consecutive days with a randomly pre-determined subtitle. They completed a vocabulary test before the experiment, immediately after the experiment, and one week after the experiment. The tests comprise words from the 2nd to 11th 1,000 level appearing at least five times across all episodes. The data were analyzed using inferential statistical analysis. The results show that vocabulary improvement was significant in both groups without any differences between groups. Still, the English subtitle group outperformed L1 subtitle counterparts for vocabulary between the 2nd and 9th 1,000 level and vocabulary appearing between five and ten times. These results suggest that movie series with both L1 and English subtitles can be used to expose students to English vocabulary, but a target language subtitle was superior for vocabulary retention. Therefore, English language learners are suggested to watch captioned English movies for maximum impact on vocabulary acquisition.

Abstract

As many smartphones are imported from overseas and the user manuals are written in English, the translation of a user manual is, therefore, very important for the Indonesian customers whose English is not their second language. Good translation results are then very essential in order that the customers understand the information easily and clearly. The focus of this research is the bilingual English-Indonesian Samsung’s GT-19500 user manual. This research aims to find translation techniques applied in the book. In this descriptive research, the sentences were the tokens that were recorded in Microsoft Excel. The tokens were then analyzed based on the categories of translation techniques in question. It was found that there were nine translation techniques used in the user manual. The translation techniques used in Samsung’s GT-19500 user manual are borrowing (41%), literal translation (25%), calque (13%), transposition (7%), equivalence (6%), adaptation (5.3%), modulation (3%), and omission (2%). Therefore, the techniques used in translating a smartphone user manual are unique to this type of document because the document consists of many terms without Indonesian equivalence.
