Abstract

Herbal antioxidants have gained attention recently as possible treatments for disorders of male reproductive function linked to oxidative stress because of their ability to neutralize free radicals. The investigation into herbal flavonoids for preserving oxidative stress-impaired testicular physiology has been effectively conducted through the visualization of bibliometric analysis. Bibliometric data of published papers collected from the PubMed and Scopus databases in 2018-2023. Network visualization was performed using VOSviewer software on the set keywords that occur (n=15). The literature review was conducted according to the research trends identified by the clusters that appeared in the network visualization. The result revealed that a total of 266 records have been published based on the specified search set keywords since 2018. Through the analysis of keywords, inclusion and exclusion criteria, and the relevant content of papers, 11 articles were identified as suitable for conducting a literature review. Network visualization revealed that the research falls into two general categories: (1) toxicity to the testicles caused by oxidative stress and (2) prevention of oxidative stress impact on tissue through herbal medicine. Examination of the paper's content revealed that certain antioxidant compounds from plants can stabilize free radicals in the testicles. These antioxidants include vitexin, diosmin, hesperidin, phenolic acids, naphthoquinones, fisetin, pachypodol, sciadopitysin, carvacrol, and morin. However, further research is needed to compare active antioxidant content in different herbal plants and identify optimal concentrations for therapeutic effects.

Abstract

Vocabulary is most important in learning a language, and thus it should be taught before teaching other language skills. Teachers need to plan which words to teach to make students learn vocabulary easier; however, Indonesian high school curriculum does not specify which vocabulary to teach. Therefore, this research was aimed at finding out the list of vocabulary required by the curriculum of junior and senior high schools in Indonesia and whether they have learned those words after graduating high school levels. Vocabulary used in texts in the national examinations is interpreted as the curriculum-expected vocabulary; therefore, the data for curriculum expectation were collected from previous national examinations. The vocabulary was classified based on most-frequently used vocabulary provided by Nation (2006) with 14,000 word-families categorized into 14 levels. Only the first 5 levels (1st - 5th 1,000) were used in this research. Later, 1,775 high school fresh graduates were tested with this vocabulary to predict the percentage of the vocabulary they have learned. The results showed that the expected vocabulary size of junior high school graduates was the 1st 2,000 words and the 1st 3,000 words for senior high school graduates. Compared to the graduate predicted vocabulary size, they only had 72% vocabulary in the 1st 1,000, 54% in the 2nd 1,000, 49% in the 3rd. These results suggest that the graduate vocabulary size has not satisfied the curriculum expectation; therefore, Indonesian high school students should be taught all words in the first 3,000 list to be able to comprehend texts in the national examination.

Abstract

In this study, we introduce the Student Contribution Index (SCI) to measure these contributions. The purpose of this quantitative study is to test the validity of SCI as a measure of task identifiability and to determine the student satisfaction with SCI-based assessments. To collect the data, 52 students were split into high and low identifiability conditions. Both groups worked on a project and completed SCI once (LI group) and twice (HI group). We measured the SCI variability using an F-test at the significance level of 0.05. Furthermore, a group project of 113 students was assessed using SCI. Students completed an evaluation form to measure procedural fairness, distributive fairness, and satisfaction. We then analyzed the correlations between these variables using Pearson's Correlation. The results show that the variability in SCI of the HI group was negligible (SD = 0), indicating that all students contributed equally to the project. Meanwhile, a variability was observed in the LI condition (SD = 0.08), suggesting that SCI was a valid measurement. Additionally, students were generally satisfied with the assessment (M = 4.40), and a significant correlation was observed between the variables. This study presents a novel method for assigning grades to group members in group projects, taking into account each member’s individual contribution. As a result, fairness in grading can be achieved, and educators can discourage social loafing and free-reading behavior.

Abstract

Abstract

The credits for translation courses offered at the study program of English Language Teaching at a university level in Indonesia are very limited, which is not sufficient to teach and facilitate practices for all techniques of translation. Therefore, the students should only be taught techniques frequently used in translation from English to Indonesian. This research was to analyze translation techniques commonly used in translating from English to Indonesian. The data were collected from Colors magazine, an in-flight magazine for Garuda Indonesia. The magazine comes in two languages. The sentences were extracted, and translated sentences in Indonesian were compared to the original version in English. The research results showed that the most frequently used techniques in translating from English into Indonesian are amplification (23.36%), reduction (15.20%), transposition (12.32%), borrowing (12%), modulation (11.68%), and literal translation (10.08%). Therefore, it is recommended that lecturers teaching students majoring English Language Teaching provide them with those techniques of translations with practices, feedbacks and explicit instruction for revisions.
