Abstract

Readability level of marine texts do influences cadets’ ability in comprehending Maritime English reading materials. This research investigates the readability level of texts in English for Mariners, an English Maritime coursebook published by Language Competence Certification Tools for the Vocations (LCCTV) used for first-year cadets at West Sumatera Merchant Marine Polytechnic. To this end, 10 selected texts from 10 units were analysed. The Flesch-Kincaid Reading Ease was utilized as readability formula to assess the readability level of texts. The findings revealed that 10% text was categorized as extremely difficult, 30% texts were difficult, 30% texts were fairly difficult, 10% text was average, 10% text was fairly easy, and 10% text was easy to read. Thus, English for mariners coursebook is readable for cadets even though few texts are too easy to comprehend.

Abstract

Introduction: The climate variability that occurs in Indonesia results in various losses for society, especially in rural areas. Rural communities whose livelihoods depend on agricultural and fishing activities are very threatened by climate variability which hampers the community's economy. Objective: This service aims to analyze participation in strengthening the adaptation of rural Generation Z in facing climate variability Method: The focus of community service in this activity is the Z generation who live in rural areas. To make it easier to provide information to generation Z. A participatory approach is used in this activity. Result: There are 3 main activities in strengthening adaptation capacity for generation Z, namely: 1. Introduction stage, including a basic understanding of several forms of climate variability that occur in rural areas. 2. Advanced stage, namely providing education regarding the impact of climate variability in rural areas, especially agriculture and fisheries, 3. Adjustment stage, namely developing adaptation strategies that must be carried out when exposure to extreme climate variability occurs. Conclusion: The results of this service show an increase in generation Z's knowledge in anticipating climate variability.

Abstract

Technological advances have simplified many fairies in human life, ranging from the social, business, political, and even educational realms. One form of technology that plays an important role in facilitating and helping humans today is computers. The presence of computers has boosted the emergence of various applications that play a very important role in supporting human work such as in producing graphic design products. Graphic design works are certainly no longer a foreign entity in life, starting from the clothes worn, the packaging design of the daily food/beverages consumed, and even the logos of the electronic objects purchased are also inseparable from the touch of graphic design. That is the value and meaning of the existence of graphic design works today for humans. Graphic design, in addition to being able to support human work to open up business opportunities, can also be a medium to foster a creative and innovative attitude for anyone who has a desire for it. On that basis, the team also considers it necessary to facilitate training such as this service to encourage the emergence of creativity and innovation in students by making SMP Negeri 1 Meulaboh, West Aceh Regency, Aceh Province as the target of this service. The steps taken in this service are divided into three time sessions, namely the beginning, middle, and end. The presentation of the material was carried out by applying the concept of Think Pair Share. From the results of the thorough evaluation, the following records were obtained: (1). Students have a high interest in these kinds of activities; (2). There is a drastic increase in knowledge and ability in students after the activity is completed from before who do not know at all and have never heard of graphic design; and (3). After the presentation of the material and demonstration, students have been able to independently practice how to design a logo using the professional application Adobe Photoshop, even if they are not very skilled.

Abstract

This research is elaborated with the intention of examining and critiquing whether cyber journalism today still exhibits a patriarchal attitude. Qualitative is a method applied by the Sara Mills Model of Critical Discourse Analysis as the basis for data analysis. The study results found that SindoNews.com is marginalized women-headed (widows) in their reporting. From January to March 2022, it was found that there were 60 news headlines about widows and 9 (nine) news headlines about widowers on the website. SindoNews.com reports in an unbalanced manner by disclosing the current percentage of widows but does not report the percentage of widowers in the same portion of news. In fact, when a divorce occurs, is not only the status of a widow, but also a widower. Then there are some news stories that discuss widowers and widows in the same portion of the news, but the titles that are highlighted are only widow status. SindowNews.com seems to prefer frying the word widow as the selling point of the news here. In addition, the status of widows was also found to be interpreted with negative tendencies, such as seductive names, thirst for sex life, women who should be pitied, perpetrators of crime, easy women, and other wild meanings. Based on the journalistic code of ethics, especially in articles (1) and (3), this kind of reporting is not feasible because the aspect of balance still needs to be fulfilled. However, the author does not deny that SindoNews.com also reports on widow cases with a positive tendency, although the intensity is small.

Abstract

Program pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kreativitas anak-anak di SOS Children’s Village Meulaboh melalui keilmuan desain komunikasi visual menggunakan perangkat lunak Ps (Photoshop). Kegiatan dilakukan melalui tiga tahap, yaitu persiapan, penerapan, dan penilaian. Pada tahap persiapan, tim pengabdian melakukan observasi, pemetaan permasalahan, dan merumuskan materi serta metode yang digunakan. Materi pengabdian dikembangkan berdasarkan aspek kognitif, afektif, dan psikomotorik. Adapun materi desain komunikasi visual yang dipilih ialah Curriculum Vitae. Pada tahap penerapan, dilakukan menggunakan metode demonstrasi yang diikuti sebanyak 8 anak diawali dengan pre-test 10 menit, penjelasan materi selama 40 menit, diskusi 20 menit, praktik langsung selama 120 menit, dan post-test 10 menit. Selanjutnya, tahap penilaian dilakukan dengan membandingkan hasil pre-test dan post-test serta menilai karya yang dihasilkan oleh anak-anak untuk kemudian menjadi masukkan terhadap pengabdian berikutnya. Hasil dari kegiatan pengabdian ini menunjukkan adanya peningkatan yang signifikan pada pengetahuan dan kreativitas anak-anak di SOS Children’s Village Meulaboh mengenai desain komunikasi visual. Mereka mampu menghasilkan Curriculum Vitae yang menarik dan profesional dengan sentuhan kreativitas yang unik serta telah mampu mengoperasikan perangkat lunak Ps secara baik.

Abstract

UKM Timang News in 2023 is stagnant in all its lines. From the results of initial observations, it was found that management was not working well, so this became the author's attention, highlighting the real root of the problem. To achieve this goal, the author uses Terry's POAC theory with descriptive qualitative methods. The results showed that the management of UKM Timang News for the 2021-2022 period was still not optimal, which also had an impact on Timang News’ inability to maintain its existence and consistency. This can be seen from the lack of comprehensive organizational management. At the planning stage, Timang News has implemented it very well by arranging careful planning such as determining the time and number of news publications each week. Likewise, at the organizing stage, Timang has arranged and divided the fields, members and tasks of each member well. However, big obstacles were encountered when the program entered the actuating and controlling stages, all activities became stagnant and irregular. After conducting research, it was found that the factors were that many administrators were busy with their respective end-of-course activities, members did not have strong work motivation because members were recruited through appointment rather than selection, lack of loyalty and responsibility, and others. UKM Timang News should be useful in its existence in the campus environment in encouraging students' intellectual and critical thinking so it would be a shame if its existence could not continue.
