Abstract

This study was conducted to address the low reading comprehension skills of junior high school students, which highlight the need for more interactive and collaborative learning strategies. The purpose of this study was to describe the application of the Listen-Read-Discuss (LRD) strategy in reading instruction and to examine how this strategy can enhance students' reading comprehension skills. This study employed a qualitative approach with a classroom action research design, implemented across three learning cycles involving 32 seventh-grade students at SMPN 03 Cibarusah, Bekasi Regency. Data were collected through observation and interviews, and analyzed using thematic analysis. The results revealed that the implementation of the LRD strategy improved students' focus, participation, and ability to comprehend descriptive texts. Each stage of this strategy played a complementary role—the listening stage helped students understand the context, the reading stage reinforced their comprehension of the text content, and the discussion stage promoted meaning clarification and collaboration among students. Challenges such as distractions and limited vocabulary were minimized through active and collaborative discussion activities. Overall, the LRD strategy proved effective in fostering more interactive and participatory reading instruction and can serve as an alternative approach for teachers to enhance students' reading comprehension at the junior high school level.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the challenges faced by 10th-grade high school students in English speaking activities through legend story-based roleplay. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach involving 10th-grade students who have participated in legend story roleplay activities. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using the interactive analysis model of Miles (2014), which includes data condensation, data display, and drawing conclusions. The results show that students face several main challenges, such as limited vocabulary, pronunciation difficulties, speaking anxiety, difficulties in acting out characters, and obstacles in group cooperation. Limited vocabulary and pronunciation are the main challenges because they affect students' ability to deliver dialogues smoothly and confidently. Despite this, students respond positively to using legend-based roleplay because it is considered interesting, fun, and helps them practice speaking in a more meaningful context. Besides improving speaking skills, this activity also introduces local cultural values through legend stories. The findings of this study suggest that legend-based roleplay has potential as an effective learning strategy, provided that teachers give enough support to help students overcome the various challenges they face.

Abstract

This study explored students’ experiences and challenges in learning listening through digital storytelling at a private vocational high school in Subang. Many EFL learners face listening comprehension difficulties, especially in understanding unfamiliar vocabulary, following spoken input, and maintaining concentration. Therefore, this study aimed to gain a deeper understanding of how digital storytelling shapes EFL learners’ listening learning process. A qualitative case study design was employed involving six tenth-grade students selected based on their participation during digital storytelling lessons. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. The data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2013), which consists of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that students generally had positive experiences with digital storytelling. They showed enjoyment and interest, used visual elements to support story comprehension, reported positive changes in pronunciation awareness and vocabulary acquisition, and engaged in collaborative discussion. However, students also encountered challenges, including unfamiliar vocabulary, difficulty following the pace of narration, and fluctuating concentration. To cope with these difficulties, they relied on visual cues, subtitles, teacher explanations, and peer discussion. The study concludes that digital storytelling provides meaningful listening experiences and supports students’ engagement when accompanied by vocabulary preparation and listening guidance.
