Abstract

Understanding students' cognitive processes in solving mathematical problems is crucial for improving instructional strategies and learning outcomes. However, limited studies have examined students' commognitive aspects in the context of geometric problem-solving, particularly in relation to cognitive styles such as Field-Independent (FI) and Field-Dependent (FD) tendencies. This study addresses this gap by analyzing the four aspects of commognition word use, visual mediators, narratives, and routines demonstrated by students when solving story problems on the surface area of a square pyramid. The study also explores the patterns of thinking and solution strategies employed by FI and FD students in approaching these problems. Conducted in Class VIII A at SMP Negeri 1 Sigi, the study involved two male students, one representing each cognitive style, to highlight differences in problem-solving approaches while controlling for gender. Data collection involved the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT) to determine cognitive style, validated problem-solving task sheets, and semi-structured interviews conducted in parallel with the written tasks. Data were analyzed using data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing techniques. The findings indicate that FI students approach problem-solving with greater detail, clarity, efficiency, and accuracy, explicitly demonstrating all four aspects of commognition. In contrast, FD students exhibit clarity, efficiency, and accuracy but lack detail and thoroughness in their written responses. Both cognitive styles demonstrate all four commognitive aspects, with notable differences in the narrative component FI students explicitly write formulas, whereas FD students understand the formulas but do not record them in writing. These findings provide valuable insights into how cognitive styles influence mathematical problem-solving and commognitive development, offering implications for differentiated instructional strategies in mathematics education.

Abstract

This community service program aims to introduce digital portfolios using Google Sites at SMPN 12 Palu in support of the Strengthening Pancasila Student Profile (P5) program. Digital portfolios have become an essential tool in modern education, serving as a means of documentation, reflection, and evaluation. Additionally, digital portfolios allow students to systematically compile their learning records, making it easier to monitor their academic progress and skill development. The methods used in this program include training, mentoring, and participatory evaluation involving students and teachers to ensure the effective implementation of digital portfolios. The primary focus of this initiative is to strengthen digital skills that support inclusive and sustainable learning. In addition to enhancing digital literacy, this program also assists students and teachers in adopting educational technology more effectively. The results indicate that digital portfolio training successfully improved the digital competencies of both students and teachers, enabling greater transparency in the educational process. Furthermore, this implementation reinforces Pancasila values in learning, particularly through the development of students' character, creativity, and independence in exploring and presenting their learning outcomes.

Abstract

The integration of ICT in learning is a component of 21st-century learning. Science and technology always develop rapidly from time to time. The purpose of this study is to determine the knowledge and abilities of junior high school mathematics teachers in STEM learning. This research was also conducted to determine student knowledge related to STEM learning. This study used a mixed method. The results showed that most junior high school mathematics teachers in the Donggala district did not understand STEM/STEAM learning. The teacher has also not been able to apply the STEM/STEAM approach in the learning process. Therefore, it is hoped that mathematics teachers in the Donggala district can apply a STEAM-based approach combined with local wisdom in the Donggala district. And it is necessary to conduct training to improve teacher competencies related to STEM learning.

Abstract

Students' concept understanding needs to be profiled so that teachers can find out the level of description and understanding of students' mathematical concepts. The purpose of this study was to describe how the understanding of students of SMP Negeri Model Integrated Madani Palu in understanding the concept of pythagorean theorem in terms of cognitive style Field Independent (FI) and Field Dependent (FD). This type of research is descriptive with qualitative approach. The subjects in this study were students of class VIII Kihajar Dewantra SMP Negeri Model Integrated Madani Palu consisting of one student cognitive style Field Independent and one student cognitive style Field Dependent selected based on the results of the GEFT test. The instruments used in this study were GEFT test, concept understanding questions and interview guidelines. The results showed that students with Field Independent cognitive style can solve problems well based on indicators of concept understanding compared to students with Gield Dependent cognitive style. Based on these conditions, in the learning process the teacher should pay attention to the learning model used in learning activities

Abstract

Understanding students' metacognitive skills in solving math problems concerning their mathematical abilities is crucial foridentifying the cognitive processes involved in problem-solving. This study investigates the metacognitive skills of SMPN 3 Palu students with varying mathematical abilities in problem-solving. It focuses on students in class VIIJ during the 2022/2023 academic year, individually analyzing one high-ability and one low-ability student. The research, descriptive in nature, employs qualitative methods using written assignments and interviews for data collection. This study's analysis involved condensing data, presenting findings, and drawing conclusions. The findings reveal distinct approaches between high and low mathematical ability subjects. High-ability students consistently apply all three metacognitive skills (planning, monitoring, and assessment) across each problem-solving stage. Conversely, low-ability students demonstrate a limited use of metacognitive skills. While they employ planning at each stage, during implementation and result review, they primarily engage in planning and monitoring, neglecting assessment. Ultimately, it underscores the critical role of metacognitive skills in mathematical problem-solving, highlighting differences in their application between students of varying mathematical abilities.

Abstract

Cognitive is the way students communicate their thinking processes in problem-solving. In solving problems, it is not only influenced by their thinking process, but other factors can affect it, such as gender differences. One of the subjects that can demonstrate students' cognitive abilities is the topic of circles. This study aims to determine students' cognitive abilities in solving circle problems from the perspective of masculine and feminine gender. The type of this research is exploratory research with a qualitative approach. This research was conducted in the 11th grade at SMA Negeri 1 Torue. The subjects in this study consist of one male student and one female student. After determining the research subjects, they were given a circular task. In addition, interviews were conducted while the subjects completed the task. The data analysis techniques used in this study are data condensation, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of this study indicate that female students can solve circle problems by expressing all cognitive aspects in detail, neatly, clearly, and correctly. Meanwhile, when solving circle problems, male students express all cognitive aspects briefly and correctly.
