Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the metacognition of grade IX students of SMP Negeri 19 Palu in solving numeracy problems based on reflective and impulsive cognitive styles. Metacognition in this study includes three aspects namely awareness, regulation, and evaluation observed at each stage of problem solving according to Polya's model. This descriptive qualitative research used Matching Familiar Figures Test (MFFT-2021), numeracy written test, think-aloud protocol, and in-depth interviews for data collection. In-depth study subjects consisted of two students, one each with reflective cognitive style and one with impulsive cognitive style. The results showed that at the stage of understanding the problem, reflective students showed high awareness and were able to organize their thoughts to understand the context of the problem in depth, while impulsive students tended to be faster in understanding the problem without in-depth analysis. At the stage of developing a plan, reflective students perform good regulation and evaluate the plan made, while impulsive students show awareness and regulation, but the evaluation of the plan is not always consistent. At the stage of implementing the plan, reflective students are able to evaluate the ongoing process, although this evaluation is more visible at the final stage, while impulsive students are less consistent in evaluation during the implementation of the plan, with evaluation only appearing at the final stage. Finally, at the looking back stage, reflective students showed a clear evaluation, although awareness and regulation were not significantly visible, while impulsive students only showed evaluation at the final stage without any deep reflection on the process that had been passed. Overall, reflective cognitive style tends to produce a more complete and in-depth metacognitive involvement in each stage of problem solving, while impulsive style shows a more limited and less consistent involvement in the evaluation aspect.      Keywords: metacognition, numeracy, cognitive style, reflective, impulsive.

Abstract

Abstract

Understanding students' metacognitive skills in solving math problems concerning their mathematical abilities is crucial for identifying the cognitive processes involved in problem-solving. This study investigates the metacognitive skills of SMPN 3 Palu students with varying mathematical abilities in problem-solving. It focuses on students in class VIIJ during the 2022/2023 academic year, individually analyzing one high-ability and one low-ability student. The research, descriptive in nature, employs qualitative methods using written assignments and interviews for data collection. This study's analysis involved condensing data, presenting findings, and drawing conclusions. The findings reveal distinct approaches between high and low mathematical ability subjects. High-ability students consistently apply all three metacognitive skills (planning, monitoring, and assessment) across each problem-solving stage. Conversely, low-ability students demonstrate a limited use of metacognitive skills. While they employ planning at each stage, during implementation and result review, they primarily engage in planning and monitoring, neglecting assessment. Ultimately, it underscores the critical role of metacognitive skills in mathematical problem-solving, highlighting differences in their application between students of varying mathematical abilities.

Abstract

This study describes students' cognitive in solving Pythagorean theorem problems in terms of gender. The research design used is explorative with a qualitative descriptive approach. The research subjects selected were 2 students, namely 1 male student and 1 female student. Data collection was carried out using written assignments and interviews. Checking the quality of the research results using data credibility is done by extending involvement, increasing persistence, discussions with peers, and membercheck and dependability. Data analysis techniques used in this research are data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The results showed that male and female students had raised all commognitive indicators. Male and female students can generally bring up keywords in the form of the words "area of a right triangle 25 ", "perimeter = K", and "hypotenuse c in k". Male students wrote very brief information while female students wrote clear and complete information. The description of the solution written by male and female students is different. The differences found were the use of visual mediators such as visualizing. Male students generalized a as height, b as base, c as hypotenuse while female students generalized a as base, b as height, c as hypotenuse. Endorsed narratives carried out by male and female students can write the formula for the hypotenuse of the Pythagorean theorem, the formula for the area of a right triangle, the formula for the perimeter of a right triangle and the factoring formula. Male and female students can also express the definition of the formula in solving Pythagorean theorem problems. Routines performed by male and female students can choose the right concepts and methods so that they have a good effect on the results of their solutions.       Keywords: commognitive, pythagorean theorem, gender. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v25i4.pp1839-1853

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to obtain a description of students' problem-solving abilities on rhombus material in class VII SMPN 6 Banawa in terms of gender differences. This study uses a qualitative method with a qualitative descriptive approach based on the problem solving steps proposed by Polya. The results of this study indicate that male and female subjects in solving mathematical problems on rhombus material are as follows. (1) in understanding the problem, male and female subjects read the problem repeatedly, to determine what is known and asked in the question. (2) in planning problem solving, male and female subjects have the same solution, namely by assuming and using the formula for the area of a rhombus. (3) in carrying out the problem-solving plan, male and female subjects solved the problem according to the plan that had been made previously, namely by using the formula for the area of a rhombus but the male subject could not find the final answer. (4) in re-examining the answers of male and female subjects, write down how to check answers, using the substitution method, namely substituting the value obtained into the rhombus formula if there is a similarity in the results between the left and right sides then the answer is considered correct but the subject is male. unable to re-check the answers obtained, this is because male subjects cannot solve the problems given.
