Abstract

Previous surveys on college academic reading often utilized questionnaires and lacked in-depth analysis to assess students' reading skills. This present study involving 80 students of Universitas Pahlawan assessed students’ academic reading skills using Correlation Test, Manova Test, and Duncan Test. In addition to examine the importance of these skills, this study also identified the need to have adequate academic reading skills. The gap between the pre-test and post-test signified the significant effects on reading skill, analysis and evaluation, reading strategies and efficiency, and influential factors. However, comprehension skills, linguistic discourse, and knowledge did not have a significant effect. Furthermore, this study also discusses the implications for researchers and for the practices of the course.

Abstract

This study examined the correlation between self-efficacy and English academic writing performance among college students in Indonesia and assessed the effect of SRL strategy on EFL students' self-efficacy. The descriptive and correlation statistics were used to analyze the data. In this study, students were classified into three categories (high, moderate, and low) based on their rate of SRL in order to examine the relationships between SRL strategy usage, self-efficacy, and academic writing performance. The results indicated that overall SRL strategy and self-efficacy in academic writing were moderate. Students who were more frequently exposed to SRL strategies showed higher self-efficacy in academic English writing. A broader set of student characteristics could be useful in future research.

Abstract

Although the benefits of online peer assessment and peer feedback on writing performance have been demonstrated, many learners might not recognize or benefit from specific change responses. This study investigated the correlation between online peer assessment and peer feedback on student writing performance. The correlation test was employed to analyze the data in this study. This study involved 145 undergraduate students (75 females and 70 males) from the State University of Malang, where the English course is mandatory for all students. This study revealed that online peer assessment and peer feedback on students' writing performance had a significant and strong relationship. On the other hand, the differences between the online peer assessment and peer feedback variables in each group were insignificant. Peer assessment and online peer feedback might have a close relationship; they can help pupils enhance their writing skills. However, there were no significant variations in each group's online peer assessment and peer feedback factors.

Abstract

Prior studies on corrective feedback have highlighted the effect of feedback on students writing accuracy. In this present study, the impacts of corrective feedback on students’ writing performance; grammatical accuracy, complexity, fluency, content and organization, appropriateness, argumentation, interpersonal, textual, lexical were examined. Participants were 96 students who were assigned into different groups to accept written corrective feedback, content and organization of ideas, multilateral feedback (i.e., on grammatical accuracy, complexity, fluency, appropriateness, argumentation, interpersonal, textual, lexical), and control group that did not accept any feedback during learning sessions. Pre-test, post-test and delayed post-test and weekly writing revisions were carried out. The results showed that the four experiment groups showed significant improvements. The results of this study showed that students had language learning potential which can be enhanced when teachers provide corrective feedbacks. This study suggested that students’ writing skills can be improved by providing sustained feedback.

Abstract

Teachers’ view influences the concepts that teachers teach in the classroom. This study examined the correlation between EFL writing feedback and oral corrective feedback (OCF) toward teachers' beliefs. Data were analyzed by the correlation test. The participants were 100 students from Malang State University (50 females and 50 males, with an average age of 19–22). The findings of this research reveal that the relationship between oral corrective feedback and writing feedback on teacher belief is significant and positive. Oral corrective feedback and writing feedback are effective in the teaching and learning. The results of this study can be used as a reference in applying OCF and writing feedback in the classroom. Teachers' beliefs are crucial and should be considered as one of the success factors for students in learning foreign languages.

Abstract

This study was designed to compare the complexity, accuracy, and fluency of EFL written text in CLIL and Non-CLIL classes. The study enrolled two groups of undergraduate students from the State University of Malang, Indonesia: an experimental CLIL class (N = 50 students; 22 males and 28 females) and a non-CLIL as control class (N = 50 students; 19 males and 31 females). Students' essays were evaluated quantitatively using some aspects of linguistic proficiency, such as complexity, accuracy, and fluency. The errors were classified as syntactic, morphological, lexical, lexicogram, spelling, and punctuation mistakes. The findings indicated that both CLIL and non-CLIL methods produced comparable complexity, accuracy, fluency, syntactic, morphological, lexicogram, and spelling scores in two groups of students. Meanwhile, for complexity and lexical values, the CLIL and Non-CLIL methods produced significantly different average scores, with the application of the non-CLIL method being higher. On the punctuation variable, the CLIL method can significantly improve the assessment. Several possible explanations for the increase in complexity, accuracy, and fluency include a preference for the English standard, the course's assessment criteria, and practice effects. The findings of this study also provide additional pedagogical implications.

Abstract

The research delved into assessing the impact of the Writers' Workshop approach on the English writing proficiency of students exhibiting diverse writing abilities. The Writers' Workshop is an instructional method that prioritizes cultivating students' writing skills through a sequence of imaginative and reflective activities. Within this approach, students are empowered to become active writers, granted the freedom to explore their ideas, craft their own manuscripts, and engage in collaborative efforts with their peers. In Riau, Indonesia, thirty-five students (19 females and 16 males) participated in English writing instruction grounded in the Writers' Workshop framework. This intervention occurred once a week for a continuous sixteen-week period. As part of the evaluation, students were tasked with composing an opinion essay as both a pre-test and post-test to gauge their writing proficiency. Notably, there was a significant improvement in the writing results across all groups, each displaying distinctive outcomes. The advanced group exhibited more pronounced benefits compared to the intermediate and novice groups, evident in the content of their essays. This disparity underscores the effectiveness of the Writers' Workshop approach, particularly in catering to varying skill levels. The positive strides observed in the students' writing abilities signify the potential of this method to foster holistic development in English writing skills, emphasizing the importance of tailored approaches in heterogeneous learning environments.

Abstract

This study was conducted to examine if gender and self-efficacy affected the writing performance of Indonesian EFL learners in college level. The research sample consisted of 150 students, comprising 67 males and 83 females. The sample was selected using convenience sampling technique, and all participants signed an informed consent form. This correlational study employed statistic analysis to determine the relationships among independent and dependent variables. Statistical analysis involved Pearson correlation test, independent t-test, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis. The results showed that writing performances of male and female groups were significantly different. However, the evidence strengthening the claim that male and female learners perform differently in terms of linguistic aspects of written outcomes was limited. Gender proceeded to explain considerable differences in writing performance, in addition to composition skills.
