Abstract

Children under five years of age who receive higher quality care tend to have lower morbidity rates and better nutritional status. The problem of malnutrition in Oka Health Center, East Flores in 2023 was 217 children, with details of children with severe underweight of 30 children, underweight of 169 children, and children at risk of being overweight of 18 children. Nutritional problems are closely related to parental care patterns, especially mothers, which are important factors for the nutritional status and health of children under five years of age. Maternal care patterns consist of feeding patterns, health care patterns, and personal hygiene patterns. This study aims to analyze the relationship between maternal care patterns and the nutritional status of under-five children. This study was conducted in the Oka Community Health Center Work Area in August 2024 with a sample of 86 under-five children. Data analysis technique using the Chi-square statistic test. The results of the study showed that feeding patterns (type of food, amount of food and frequency of feeding) (p-value = 0.005 <0.05), health care patterns (utilization of health services, immunization and history of infectious diseases) (p-value = 0.015 <0.05), and personal hygiene patterns (personal hygiene and environmental hygiene) (p-value = 0.010 <0.05) have a significant relationship with the nutritional status of children. It is recommended that parents can improve their knowledge and motivation to pay more attention to child care patterns, especially for children under five years of age.

Abstract

Hypertension is a medical condition in which an individual experiences a persistent increase in blood pressure above the normal threshold, defined as a systolic pressure ≥140 mmHg and/or diastolic pressure ≥90 mmHg. Hypertension, commonly referred to as high blood pressure, is a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, and various other health complications. This community engagement program aimed to improve knowledge, awareness, and preventive behaviors regarding hypertension among adolescents through health education, innovative interactive educational media, and the involvement of peer health agents at SMPN 1 Kupang Timur. The activities was conducted through several stages, including an initial survey, health education using booklets and interactive websites, and the training of peer health agents from the student council (OSIS). Evaluation results showed a significant improvement: among the 50 participating students, the average score for hypertension knowledge increased from 61.5 to 80.5, with 44 students (88%) showing improvement. Knowledge as a peer health agent rose from 55.7 to 84.8 (92%), and the ability to educate peers saw the most significant jump, from 30.3 to 89.9 (98%) after the intervention. These findings confirm that interactive media and peer education-based approaches are effective in promoting behavioral change and sustainable hypertension prevention within the school environment. This program offers valuable implications for developing similar initiatives in other schools to reduce the incidence of hypertension among adolescents.

Abstract

Abstract

Stunting is a condition of impaired growth and development in children under five years of age due to chronic malnutrition and recurrent infections, especially during the first 1,000 days of life, from conception until the child is 23 months old. A child is classified as experiencing growth faltering when their height is below minus two standard deviations from the median height of children of the same age. This condition usually becomes apparent at around two years of age, and its impacts are irreversible. This research uses a descriptive study design with a survey method. The population includes all mothers in Bello Sub-District who have undernourished toddlers aged 2 to 5 years (more than 24 months up to 59 months). Samples were taken using an accidental sampling method. The findings indicate that maternal parenting patterns for undernourished toddlers are generally good. However, improvements are still needed in certain areas such as feeding practices ensuring balanced meal composition and avoiding coercive feeding and in environmental sanitation, particularly the condition of open wastewater drainage systems.

Abstract

Background: Stunting is a condition of failure to thrive in children under five years old (children under five) due to chronic malnutrition in the First 1000 Days of Life (HPK) and is based on the BB/U or TB/U index with a z-score limit of less than -2 SD to - 3 SD. Stunting can be caused by several factors, namely exclusive breastfeeding, father's education, mother's education, family income, number of children. The purpose of this study is to determine the factors associated with the incidence of stunting in the Naibonat Village, Kupang Regency in 2022. Subjects and Method: This is a case-control study conducted in Naibonat Village, East Kupang, Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, in September-October 2022. There were 134 children under five consisting of 67 stunted children under five and 67 children under five who were not stunted. The dependent variable is the incidence of stunting. The independent variables were exclusive breastfeeding, history of infectious diseases, father's education, mother's education, family income, history of LBW, and number of children. Data were collected using observation sheets and analyzed using the chi-square test. Results: Not exclusively breastfed (OR= 4.12; 95% CI= 1.84 to 9.24; p< 0.001), history of father's education was low (OR= 0.34; 95% CI= 0.13 to 0.89; p= 0.024), history of mother's education was low (OR= 0.17; 95% CI= 0.04 to 0.65; p= 0.004), low family income (OR= 0.23; 95% CI= 0.08 to 0.62; p= 0.002), and history of LBW (OR= 0.48; 95% CI= 0.40 to 0.51; p= 0.042) related to the incidence of stunting, and statistically significant. Conclusion: A history of exclusive breastfeeding, a history of low father education, a history of low maternal education, low family income, and a history of LBW are statistically related to the incidence of stunting.
