Abstract

Herbal plants are one source of discovering secondary metabolites for active ingredients in medicine and one of them is Etlingera rubroloba from the Zingiberaceae group. The stems of these plants contain polyphenols as natural antioxidants. Application of natural antioxidants can be given topically through spray gel preparations. Spray preparations in gel form using HPMC can produce clear visuals, stable viscosity and do not irritate the skin. This study aims to obtain the optimal concentration of HPMC in the manufacture of E.rubroloba ethanol extract spray gel in terms of the resulting evaluation and physical stability. Formulation of spray gel based on the experimental method of optimizing gel base by adding E.rubroloba ethanol extract in various concentrations of HPMC 0.1% (F1); 0.2% (F2); 0.3% (F3) ; 0.4% (F4); and 0.5% (F5). The results showed that F1 with 0.1% HPMC had the best physical properties and stability of the preparation with a clear organoleptic, characteristic odor, and slightly viscous, producing a homogeneous spray gel, having a pH of 6, viscosity of 60 cps, spray weight of 0.13 gram, dry time 1.14 minutes, pattern and diameter of spraying spread well, and physically stable through centrifugation method stability test and cycling test. Abstract

Free radicals contain at least one or more free electrons, so they are reactive and unstable. Several diseases experience increased oxidative stress due to the stability of free radicals, which has the potential to damage the integrity of DNA, proteins, and lipids. The body's ability to accumulate free radicals can be stopped with natural antioxidants. One plant with antioxidant potential is Etlingera alba. Utilization of potential is carried out through the preparation of elastic niosomes from the ethanol extract of E. alba rhizomes using Span 80 so that it can facilitate this natural material transdermally. Gel preparations with carbopol as a gelling agent can be used in the application of E. alba ethanol extract elastic niosomes to the skin. The aim of this research was to make an elastic niosome gel with optimal concentrations of Span 80 and carbopol. Elastic niosomes were characterized through morphology, particle size, and polydispersity index. The results of the characterization of elastic niosomes showed that FD (Span 80 15%) produced the best elastic niosomes with an average vesicle size of 10.43 nm, polydispersity index of 0.282, and spherical shape. Elastic niosome gel preparations were evaluated through organoleptic, pH, viscosity, spreadability, and physical stability using cycling tests. The evaluation results showed that F1 gel (carbopol 0.5%) produced the best physical properties of the gel with organoleptic viscosity, characteristic odor and white, pH 6, viscosity 2,433 cps, and spreadability 6.6 cm and was physically stable through method testing. cycling-test. Abstract

Body lotion is a liquid emulsion preparation consisting of an oil phase and a water phase stabilized by emulsifiers, functioning to maintain skin moisture and provide protection. One of the most widely used active ingredients in current cosmetic formulations is niacinamide, known for its effectiveness in brightening the skin, enhancing the skin barrier function, and reducing hyperpigmentation. The success of a body lotion formulation depends largely on the appropriate selection and concentration of emulsifiers to achieve emulsion stability and optimal physical characteristics. This study aimed to optimize the combination of Tween 80 and Span 80 emulsifiers in a body lotion formulation containing niacinamide using a 2² factorial design method with the assistance of Design-Expert software. The formulation was evaluated based on several physical parameters, including pH, adhesiveness, spreadability, viscosity, homogeneity, emulsion type, and physical stability, as well as a hedonic test assessing color, odor, and texture. Optimization results indicated that the best formulation was obtained from a combination of 1% Tween 80 and 10% Span 80. The resulting product had a pH of 6.4, adhesiveness of 112 seconds, spreadability of 6.1 cm, viscosity of 16,568.3 cps, good homogeneity, and demonstrated a stable oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion type without phase separation. Therefore, the optimum combination of Tween 80 and Span 80 in concentrations of 1% and 10%, respectively, yields a physically stable niacinamide-containing body lotion.

Abstract

High ultraviolet (UV) exposure in tropical regions increases the risk of premature skin aging (photoaging), while public awareness regarding proper sunscreen use remains limited. This community service program aimed to improve community literacy on sunscreen use as an effort to prevent photoaging. The program was conducted in Anduonohu Village, Kendari City through door-to-door education, interactive counseling, sunscreen application demonstrations, leaflet distribution, and evaluation using post-tests and direct discussions. Educational materials included the dangers of UV exposure, selection of SPF and PA, correct sunscreen application techniques, and the importance of reapplication. The results showed an improvement in participants’ understanding and awareness regarding daily sunscreen use. Post-test evaluation indicated that 70% of participants experienced increased knowledge and behavioral changes related to sunscreen use. This activity demonstrates that personal and demonstrative educational approaches are effective in improving community skin health literacy.

Abstract

Low drug literacy can lead to drug misuse, irrational self-medication, and the procurement of medicines from unofficial sources. This community service activity aimed to improve the knowledge of Watu-Watu Village residents on proper drug access and acquisition through the DAGUSIBU program, using educational leaflets, discussions, and interactive question-and-answer sessions. Program effectiveness was measured using pre- and post-tests, as well as Likert-scale evaluations. Results showed an increase in community knowledge from 61% to 100%, and the program received a mean evaluation score of 4.83 out of 5. The leaflet-based DAGUSIBU program, combined with active interaction, effectively improved community drug literacy and can serve as a replicable model for community-based pharmaceutical education.
