Abstract

Free radicals contain at least one or more free electrons, so they are reactive and unstable. Several diseases experience increased oxidative stress due to the stability of free radicals, which has the potential to damage the integrity of DNA, proteins, and lipids. The body's ability to accumulate free radicals can be stopped with natural antioxidants. One plant with antioxidant potential is Etlingera alba. Utilization of potential is carried out through the preparation of elastic niosomes from the ethanol extract of E. alba rhizomes using Span 80 so that it can facilitate this natural material transdermally. Gel preparations with carbopol as a gelling agent can be used in the application of E. alba ethanol extract elastic niosomes to the skin. The aim of this research was to make an elastic niosome gel with optimal concentrations of Span 80 and carbopol. Elastic niosomes were characterized through morphology, particle size, and polydispersity index. The results of the characterization of elastic niosomes showed that FD (Span 80 15%) produced the best elastic niosomes with an average vesicle size of 10.43 nm, polydispersity index of 0.282, and spherical shape. Elastic niosome gel preparations were evaluated through organoleptic, pH, viscosity, spreadability, and physical stability using cycling tests. The evaluation results showed that F1 gel (carbopol 0.5%) produced the best physical properties of the gel with organoleptic viscosity, characteristic odor and white, pH 6, viscosity 2,433 cps, and spreadability 6.6 cm and was physically stable through method testing. cycling-test. Abstract

Body lotion is a liquid emulsion preparation consisting of an oil phase and a water phase stabilized by emulsifiers, functioning to maintain skin moisture and provide protection. One of the most widely used active ingredients in current cosmetic formulations is niacinamide, known for its effectiveness in brightening the skin, enhancing the skin barrier function, and reducing hyperpigmentation. The success of a body lotion formulation depends largely on the appropriate selection and concentration of emulsifiers to achieve emulsion stability and optimal physical characteristics. This study aimed to optimize the combination of Tween 80 and Span 80 emulsifiers in a body lotion formulation containing niacinamide using a 2² factorial design method with the assistance of Design-Expert software. The formulation was evaluated based on several physical parameters, including pH, adhesiveness, spreadability, viscosity, homogeneity, emulsion type, and physical stability, as well as a hedonic test assessing color, odor, and texture. Optimization results indicated that the best formulation was obtained from a combination of 1% Tween 80 and 10% Span 80. The resulting product had a pH of 6.4, adhesiveness of 112 seconds, spreadability of 6.1 cm, viscosity of 16,568.3 cps, good homogeneity, and demonstrated a stable oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion type without phase separation. Therefore, the optimum combination of Tween 80 and Span 80 in concentrations of 1% and 10%, respectively, yields a physically stable niacinamide-containing body lotion.

Abstract

Cosmetic cleansers function to remove dirt and residual makeup from the skin surface. Cleansing balm is an oil-based cleansing formulation that works through the dissolution of lipophilic compounds on the skin. Grape seed oil (Vitis vinifera L.), which is rich in fatty acids, has the potential to enhance cleansing effectiveness and can therefore be formulated into a cleansing balm stick. This study aimed to evaluate the physical characteristics and cleansing efficacy of a cleansing balm stick containing grape seed oil. The formulations were prepared with varying concentrations of grape seed oil: 0% (F0), 10% (F1), 20% (F2), and 30% (F3). Evaluation of physical characteristics included organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, spreadability, and melting point. The cleansing efficacy test was conducted using the NIKKOL method and verified with an oil control film. The results showed that all formulations exhibited good physical characteristics, were homogeneous, and met the required standards for pH, spreadability, and melting point for topical preparations. Formula F2, containing 20% grape seed oil, demonstrated the most optimal cleansing effectiveness, as indicated by the absence of stains or oil residue after rinsing. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that cleansing balm sticks containing 10–30% grape seed oil possess good physical characteristics, with the optimal formulation at 20% concentration showing the best cleansing effectiveness.

Abstract

Ultraviolet radiation, temperature, and humidity can cause a reduction in the skin's moisture content, leading to dryness. Therefore, an effective moisturizing preparation is required to maintain skin hydration. Avocado (Persea americana Mill.) oil is known to contain unsaturated fatty acids, vitamins, and antioxidants, making it a potential natural moisturizer. This study aimed to formulate a facial serum utilizing avocado oil as the active ingredient and to evaluate its physical characteristics, stability, and moisturizing activity. An experimental approach was employed, creating four facial serum formulations with avocado oil concentrations of 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15%. The evaluations encompassed organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, adhesiveness, spreadability, viscosity, phase separation, and emulsion type. Physical stability was assessed using the cycling test method, and moisturizing activity was evaluated in vitro. The results indicated that all formulations exhibited good physical characteristics, were homogeneous, experienced no phase separation, were oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions, and possessed pH values compatible with the skin's physiological pH. The preparations maintained physical stability following the cycling test. Furthermore, the moisturizing activity tests revealed that an increased concentration of avocado oil enhanced the moisturizing efficacy, with formula F3 (15%) yielding the highest moisture values: 52.830% before the cycling test and 42.970% afterward. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the avocado oil-based facial serum, particularly formula F3, demonstrates the potential to be developed as a stable, safe, and effective facial skin moisturizer

Abstract

Dry skin is associated with barrier dysfunction and decreased hydration of the stratum corneum. Santalum album and Olea europaea contain bioactive compounds that function as emollients and occlusives. A serum balm formulation with a high concentration of active ingredients has the potential to effectively restore skin moisture. This study aimed to determine the optimal composition of a serum balm formula, identify the physical characteristics and stability of the formulation using the cycling test method, and evaluate the moisturizing effectiveness of a serum balm containing sandalwood oil and olive oil. The method involved formulating a serum balm with varying concentrations of sandalwood oil as the active ingredient, followed by evaluation of physical characteristics including organoleptic properties, pH, homogeneity, spreadability, and adhesiveness. Stability testing was conducted using the cycling test method by storing the preparation at 4°C for 24 hours and then transferring it to room temperature (25°C) for another 24 hours. The effectiveness test was performed using an in vitro occlusivity method. The results showed that the serum balm formulations were homogeneously distributed, had a pH of approximately 5, spreadability of 3.2–3.6 cm, and adhesiveness ranging from 9–22 seconds. The physical stability test indicated that the formulations met the required standards, and the moisturizing effectiveness ranged from 30–62%. In conclusion, the most optimal formula was F5 with 10% sandalwood oil, as it demonstrated the highest moisturizing activity at 61.095% before the cycling test and 54.965% after the cycling test, while also fulfilling the required physical characteristics.
