Abstract

This study examines the management of innovation initiation in Islamic education and its implications for strengthening madrasah competitiveness, using MAN 2 Tulungagung and MAN 2 Kota Kediri as multisite cases. While existing studies on Islamic educational innovation primarily focus on implementation and outcomes, the initiation phase of innovation remains underexplored, particularly in the context of madrasah management. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach within a naturalistic paradigm, this research explores how innovation initiation is strategically managed across three domains: curriculum, student development, and human resources (teachers). The findings indicate that innovation initiation is driven by benchmarking, internal awareness building, and systematic identification of student potential through psychological and talent–interest assessments. MAN 2 Tulungagung initiated innovation through talent-based superior classes and differentiated instruction aligned with the Merdeka Curriculum, supported by structured teacher development. In contrast, MAN 2 Kota Kediri adopted an integrative model that connects intrakurikuler, kokurikuler, and ekstrakurikuler programs through its “Red Carpet” philosophy, emphasizing holistic talent development and character formation. Across both sites, innovation initiation is characterized by collaborative decision-making, curriculum flexibility, professional learning communities, and strong leadership commitment. This study contributes novel insights by conceptualizing innovation initiation as a strategic managerial process that precedes implementation and directly shapes institutional competitiveness. It demonstrates that innovation initiation grounded in Islamic educational values functions as a foundational driver of academic excellence, institutional differentiation, and sustainable competitive advantage in contemporary madrasahs.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of Islamic social values in the Nyadran Mbah Sutononggo culture in East Java, Indonesia. The focus of the study is directed at two main aspects: the description of the Nyadran ritual procession and the implementation of Islamic social values contained therein. This study uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological design. Data collection techniques include participatory observation, unstructured interviews, and documentation. The primary data sources used are several residents of Ngreco Village, including youth, religious leaders, academics, and village elders. Data were analyzed through three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. To ensure data validity, this study employs triangulation, encompassing credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability. The findings show that the Nyadran Mbah Sutononggo tradition has two implementation styles: the first is an Islamic social style characterized by the recitation of Yasin, tahlil (joint prayer), tausiyah (study of sermons), and eating together (alms); the second is a Javanese ritual style characterized by burning incense, scattering flowers, and prayers for good fortune to the ancestors. Each ritual carries a philosophical value. From an Islamic social perspective, three main dimensions are implemented: the aqidah dimension (strengthening monotheism through prayer and religious sermons), the moral dimension (silaturahmi, cooperation, and almsgiving), and the mu'amalah dimension (traditional economic activities based on mutual assistance and cooperation). This research confirms that the Nyadran tradition is not merely a traditional ritual but also a strategic means for implementing Islamic social values. However, further efforts are needed to eradicate the accompanying polytheistic practices.

Abstract

This study aims to explore how multicultural education from an Islamic perspective contributes to building intercultural tolerance in Indonesian primary schools. The research was conducted at SDN Pace 01 in the Silo District of Jember Regency using a qualitative case study design. Participants included teachers, students, parents, and the principal. This case study design was chosen because it allows researchers to deeply explore the processes, interactions, and specific contexts of the school as a cohesive system. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, student surveys, and document analysis. The data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman's interactive model alongside thematic analysis. The findings reveal that Islamic values such as tasamuh (tolerance), ukhuwah (brotherhood), and adl (justice) are consistently integrated into pedagogical practices, including collaborative learning, storytelling, and reflective classroom discussions. Students demonstrated high levels of tolerance toward linguistic, ethnic, and religious diversity, with collaboration emerging as the strongest indicator of this tolerance. However, challenges include limited teacher training in multicultural pedagogy and parental concerns about maintaining Islamic identity. The study concludes that Islamic-based multicultural education provides a practical framework for fostering intercultural competence from an early age while preserving religious identity. The results have significant implications for teacher professional development, curriculum innovation, and community engagement, and suggest directions for future research across broader contexts and with the integration of digital learning platforms.

Abstract

This study explores the internalization of Ahlussunnah wal Jama’ah (Aswaja) values in character formation at Madrasah Aliyah Ta’limuasyibian, Pandan Indah Village. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through interviews, participant observation, and document analysis. Findings reveal that Aswaja values—such as moderation (tawasuth), tolerance (tasamuh), balance (tawazun), and social responsibility (amar ma’ruf nahi munkar)—are systematically embedded in curricular activities, school culture, and daily student interactions. These values are integrated not only in religious subjects but also across general lessons, extracurricular religious rituals, and peer interactions. Key challenges include limited teacher training, insufficient contextual teaching resources, and external influences from digital media. Nevertheless, strong community engagement, exemplary leadership from teachers, and active student participation enhance the internalization process. The study highlights the significance of character education rooted in Islamic local wisdom as a strategic response to the moral challenges faced by youth in the digital age
