Abstract

One of the important food crops in Gorontalo is corn (Zea mays L. var. ceratina), and root health is very important in determining its growth and productivity. This study aims to determine the root shoot-root ratio and root infection of waxy corn plants given arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi as biostimulants. This study was conducted from July to December 2025 using a completely randomized block design (RBD) with four different doses mycorrhizal arbuscular: 0, 10, 20, 30 g /polybag, which were replicated three times and observed periodically over 42 days after planting (DAP). The variables observed were root shoot-root ratio and root infection of plants at 14, 21, 28, 35, and 42 days after planting. The results showed that the application of mycorrhizae with different doses resulted in a root shoot ratio that increased in line with the increasing age of the plant. In contrast, it was interesting to find that in plant root infections, mycorrhizal application appeared to increase until the plants were 28 days after planting, after which it declined. This finding suggests that arbuscular mycorrhizal inoculation given to plants at different doses can impact root health, as indicated by the ratio of root decay to root infection. The symbiosis between mycorrhizae and plants is crucial for the growth of waxy corn.

Abstract

The low quality of cocoa beans in Tamilo Hamlet, Saritani Village, Boalemo Regency, is primarily caused by farmers' preference to sell wet and unfermented (asalan) beans due to urgent economic pressures and entrapment in the ijon system (pre-harvest lending). This community service program aims to improve cocoa bean quality through the implementation of fermentation techniques using the Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, which positions farmers as active subjects of change. The implementation methodology was carried out sequentially, starting with an awareness and economic analysis phase to reconstruct farmers' mindsets, followed by a technology transfer phase through Field Schools covering cultivation training (Good Agricultural Practices/GAP) and processing (Good Manufacturing Practices/GMP). The results indicate a transformation in farmers' economic orientation from "quick cash" to "value-added" after farming simulations demonstrated that the price increase of fermented beans could offset weight shrinkage and increase profit margins. The technical success of the program is marked by the active participation of 15 farmers and the independent construction of 10 fermentation box units using local materials, indicating the self-reliance and sustainability of post-harvest technology adoption in the partner location.

Abstract

Participation of informal sector workers in the Indonesian Social Security Employment Program (BPJS Ketenagakerjaan) in Gorontalo City remains low. This condition is influenced by multiple factors, including individual characteristics, occupational conditions, and socio-economic status. Understanding these determinants is essential to improve coverage and protection for informal workers. This study aimed to identify the key factors associated with BPJS Ketenagakerjaan participation among informal sector workers, particularly rickshaw drivers. This analytical observational study employed a cross-sectional design involving 342 informal sector workers selected through accidental sampling. Data were collected using structured questionnaires that had undergone validity testing using item–total correlations (items accepted when r-count > r-table, p < 0.05) and reliability testing using Cronbach’s Alpha, with coefficients ≥ 0.70 indicating acceptable internal consistency. Data were analyzed through univariate analysis, bivariate binary logistic regression, and multivariate binary logistic regression to identify significant predictors of BPJS Ketenagakerjaan participation. Bivariate analysis revealed that income, occupation, and perceptions of BPJS benefits were significantly associated with program participation. Multivariate logistic regression identified income as the most dominant predictor. The final regression model demonstrated good predictive ability, as indicated by satisfactory values of Nagelkerke R² and classification accuracy. Participation in BPJS Ketenagakerjaan among informal sector workers is influenced by various internal and external factors, with income emerging as the primary determinant. Efforts to increase participation should prioritize strategies that address these key influencing factors, particularly socio-economic barriers.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the relationship between floret length and the developmental stages of microspores in banana male inflorescence (Musa spp. cv. Tanduk), and to determine the optimal floret size range as an explant source for initiating microspore culture. Ten bract layers were analyzed, with five florets randomly selected from each layer and measured for their length. Anthers were extracted from each floret, crushed in sterile water, and observed microscopically using a wet mount preparation. The results revealed a strong correlation between floret length and microspore developmental stages. Microspores at the late uninucleate (vacuolated) to early bicellular stages were consistently found in florets ranging from 4.68 to 4.34 cm in length. Based on these findings, florets within the 4.60 to 4.00 cm range are recommended as the optimal size for microspore culture initiation, as they contain a higher proportion of developmentally competent microspores for embryogenesis induction. In conclusion, this study provides essential morphological and cytological criteria to support efficient explant selection for in vitro regeneration of banana through the microspore culture approach.
