Abstract

One of the most common bacterial infections is pharyngitis. Most cases of acute pharyngitis are caused by viruses, but the main bacterial agent is Streptococcus pyogenes. Some antibiotics have been resistant to Streptococcus pyogenes, so alternative antibacterials are needed, namely the use of clove leaves (Syzygium aromaticum L.). The type of research used is Quasi Experiment. This study was conducted to test the antibacterial activity of clove leaves against Streptococcus pyogenes. Clove leaf extract was obtained by maceration method using 96% ethanol solvent. Phytochemical tests on clove leaf extracts showed positive leaves containing saponins, phenols, terpenoids, flavonoids, and tannins. Antibacterial activity test was conducted by disc diffusion method with variation of extract concentration of 10%, 15%, and 25% and incubation time for 24 and 48 hours. Bacitracin disc was used as positive control and negative control used 10% DMSO. The test results showed that there was antibacterial activity indicated by the formation of inhibition zone at 25% concentration with an average of 9.23 mm and 15% concentration of 8.8 mm. The zone of inhibition formed did not match the zone of inhibition in the control (≥13 mm).

Abstract

Deparaffinization removes residual paraffin from tissue, enabling optimal dye absorption in histological preparations. While xylol is commonly used, its high exposure risks necessitate exploring safer alternatives. The research compares the efficacy of corn oil 60°C to xylol as a deparaffinization agent. Heated corn oil is necessary to reduce viscosity and increase solubility. Corn oil can also be used as an environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternative. The research employed a descriptive approach, comparing staining results of kidney tissue preparations from control and experimental groups. Assessment criteria included color uniformity and contrast, determined by the difference in Optical Density values between nuclear and cytoplasmic staining. Due to non-normal data distribution and the comparison of two unpaired means, the Mann-Whitney U test was utilized for statistical analysis. The results obtained an Asymp sig value of 0.002 where the value is included <0.05 which explains that there is a significant different on the staining results of tissue preparations deparaffinized using xylol and corn oil 60°C with the percentage of staining results in the good category deparaffinized using corn oil only reached 26.67%. The results showed that there were differences in the staining results of kidney tissue preparations deparaffinized using xylol and 60°C corn oil so that 60°C corn oil has less effective to be an alternative deparaffinization agent to replace xylol.

Abstract

Dengue fever is a serious health problem in Indonesia, caused by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Mosquito resistance to chemical insecticides is increasing due to inappropriate use, so alternative vector control is needed, including natural larvicides from plants. Kenikir (Cosmos caudatus) is one of the plants that has potential as a larvicide, thanks to its essential oil and secondary metabolites. This study aims to test the effect of kenikir leaf infusion on the mortality of Aedes aegypti larvae with various concentrations and determine the effective concentration as LC50, which kills 50% of larvae. The population in this study was all species of kenikir from Manoko plantation, Lembang, with the sample being the leaves of Cosmos caudatus species. A total of 315 Aedes aegypti larvae were obtained from Loka Litbang and used as research objects. A true experimental method was used with a Static Group Comparison design, involving experimental and control groups. The object of the study was Aedes aegypti instar III larvae tested with kenikir infusion at concentrations of 25%, 35%, 45%, 55%, and 65%. The results showed that the minimum effective concentration was 25%, while the probit test indicated a concentration of 28% as the LC50 in 24 hours. Larval mortality was caused by damage to the outer membrane of the tissue, indicating an effect of the kenikir extract, rather than a lack of food.

Abstract

Black glutinous tape contains anthocyanins and has antioxidant activity as well as fiber. Consumption of black glutinous tape at least >11.5grams a day can prevent the occurrence of metabolic syndrome. One of the components of metabolic syndrome is the accumulation of fat around the waist (central obesity). The study aimed to determine the effectiveness of giving black glutinous rice tape cookies and nutritional education on weight loss in obese adolescents. The research design used quasi-experiments before and post-test two groups, by comparing the change in body weight between subjects who were given black tape cookies and subjects who were given nutrition education. The research was conducted in August-September 2017 at SMAN 2 and 3 Cimahi. The population is all students who are obese based on the BMI/U indicator of a Z score value of>+1.  The minimum sample size in each group was 21. The study showed that there was an average weight decrease in the group given black glutinous rice tape cookies (0.53+1.41kg) and in the group given nutrition education (0.43+1.40kg). Based on statistical tests, there was no difference in weight before and after the intervention (p>0.05). Giving black glutinous rice tape cookies and providing nutrition education for one month to obese teenagers can lead to weight loss, but this has not been statistically proven. Further research is needed on the provision of sticky rice tape cookies with various weights and with a longer period of time so that the impact of weight loss on obese teenagers can be observed.

Abstract

Currently, cases of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) in the world and in Indonesia are increasing. Based on the 2018 Riskesdas results, the prevalence of diabetes sufferers is 2%. This shows an increase in the prevalence of diabetes from 2013, namely 1.5%. Cookies are one of the food products that are starting to be developed as a snack for people with DM, besides that cookies are liked by various age groups and have a high shelf life. Modified cookies with Mocaf Flour and Purple Sweet Potatoes can be given as snacks to accompany DM products. Mocaf flour and purple sweet potato are foods with a low glycemic index so they are good for DM sufferers. Apart from that, purple sweet potatoes also contain antioxidants which can ward off free radicals to prevent oxidative stress. The aim of this research was to determine the effect of the formulation of Purple Sweet Potato and Mocaf Flour on the quality of Moube Cookies which meet dietary requirements and organoleptic properties. The research design used was an experiment with 30 trained panelists. The results of research on the organoleptic properties of the three formulas concluded that there were no significant differences with p (0.001) > α (0.05)..   Keywords: Diabetes Mellitus, Mocaf Flour, Purple Sweet Potatoes

Abstract

Riskesdas 2018 shows 4.5% of 1-2 year old children experience poor nutritional status. The reason is the low quality of MP-ASI and inappropriate parenting. Local foods such as catfish and red beans can be made MP-ASI. Catfish is a freshwater fish with high protein (12-17.5%) and low fat (0.9-1.2%) with a production of 437,111 tons. Red beans are a source of vegetable protein (22%) with a production of 67,876 tons. The catfish and red beans were made into flour, then formulated as MP-ASI biscuits. This study aims to determine the organoleptic properties (color, aroma, taste, texture, and overall) and nutritional content (energy, protein, fat, carbohydrates and iron) of MP-ASI biscuits. The design of this research is an experimental study. Product quality analysis includes organoleptic properties, macronutrients, and iron. Organoleptic test using hedonic test on 3 biscuit formulations with a ratio of catfish flour and red bean flour, namely F1 (35%: 65%), F2 (40%: 60%) and F3 (45%: 65%). The results of the organoleptic test by 30 panelists showed that the best formula was F1 with an average score of color (5.7), aroma (5.3), taste (5.1), texture (5.4), and overall (5.5). ). Each serving of MP-ASI biscuits (50 g) contains 173.2 kcal of energy, 30.4 g of carbohydrates, 4.7 g of protein, 3.5 g of fat and 0.07 mg of iron (Fe). The selling price per serving weighing 50 g (5 pieces) is Rp. 4.237. This MP-ASI biscuit can be used as a snack for children (1-2 years), but it has a slightly fishy and slightly unpleasant aroma and a slightly hard texture, so it is hoped that it can be improved in future research.
