Abstract

This study focuses on assessing the coastal conditions in Jambi Province both physicochemical and biological parameters. This combination of assessments previously still had limited understanding. Retrieval of physical parameter data using a multi-parameter water quality analyzer, chemical data using the APHA method and spectrophotometer, and chlorophyll-a data using the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS). The results, with adjustments to national quality standards and pollution index measurements, showed that the five research stations on the east coast of Jambi experienced light to moderate pollution with a score range of 1.252-5.831. Pollution is in the form of nutrients, especially nitrate. However, the trophic index of the coast is classified as oligotrophic, which ranges between 0.689278 - 0.7599 mg/m3. Otherwise, the high nutrient values are TOM and TN, which have a significant correlation, besides the correlation with DO and pH. Measurements of TN and TP in the water column and sediment have also been carried out, where the water column TN concentration is about 5 times higher than the sediment TN and the water column TP concentration is 7 times lower than the sediment TP. The results of this study will contribute to a better understanding of coastal ecosystem health and its significance for the management of the coastal environment in Jambi as a fisheries catchment area.

Abstract

The Karimata Strait possesses unique characteristics influenced by its geographical location and the local, regional, and global impacts on its physical, biological, and chemical parameters, contributing to its potential as a significant fishing ground. This study aims to observe and analyze the physical oceanographic parameters, including temperature, salinity, and sea surface currents, within the Karimata Strait. The dataset comprises monthly averaged data, resulting in a single representative value for each month. Key physical parameters examined include temperature, salinity, and the horizontal (u) and vertical (v) current components. The patterns of sea surface temperature (SST) and salinity distribution in the Karimata Strait exhibit significant variations between the west and east monsoons. During the west monsoon season, the South China Sea influenced the region with lower SST and higher salinity than the Java Sea. In contrast, the east monsoon demonstrates an inverse pattern with warmer, fresher waters from the Java Sea moving towards the strait. Additionally, the horizontal distribution of these parameters highlights the critical role of sea currents in dispersing physical oceanographic characteristics within the region. These findings underscore the dynamic nature of the Karimata Strait's oceanography, influenced by seasonal monsoon shifts, water masses from adjacent seas, and freshwater inputs from rivers, crucial for understanding the broader Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) system and its implications for regional climate and marine ecosystems.

Abstract

Carocok Tarusan Fishing Port is one of the fishing ports in West Sumatra Province and is a place for fishing activities in Pesisir Selatan Regency with high productivity. Factors that affect the productivity of fishermen include social and economic factors, such as the amount of capital, number of ships, number of workers, distance traveled at sea, and experience. The fishing fleet commonly used is Bagan, with as many as 171 units. Bagan ships in the Carocok Tarusan are dominated by ships measuring ≤30 GT, as many as 162 ships, while those measuring >30 GT are nine ships widely used by fishermen in the Carocok Tarusan Waters are ships measuring ≤30GT. This study aimed to determine the productivity of Bagan Perahu catches based on differences in ship size. This study was conducted from July 2023 to August 2023. The method used in this study was the survey method, with direct observation in the field, conducting interviews with fishermen, and recording the catch using a bagan ship. The types of fish caught using Bagan are Anchovi, Mackerel Scad, and Mackerel Tuna (main catch). Peperek fish, skipjack tuna, Indian Mackerel, Selar fish and Squid (bycatch). Based on the study's results, it can be concluded that in the waters of the Carocok Tarusan, Anchovies are the most commonly caught catch using a boat lift net. Ships measuring 1-10 GT have a higher productivity value than ships measuring 11-20 GT and ships measuring 21-30 GT. With a correlation value (R) approaching 1, the relationship between the dependent variable and the independent variable is stated to be very strong. Meanwhile, the results of multiple linear regression show that 81.14% is influenced by the independent variables (trip, ship size (GT), crew, fuel, and logistics).

Abstract

The nilem fish (Osteochilus hasselti) is one of the most easily caught fish in Teluk Lake. Currently, cage farming activity in the lake slightly exceeds the water carrying capacity, which is suspected to affect the life of fish in the lake, including nilem. This study aimed to determine the condition factor and Gonadosomatic Index (GSI) of the nilem catch in the lake. This study was conducted from August to September 2023 in Teluk Lake. This research used a survey method with simple census sampling techniques. The analysis of the length-weight relationship of nilem fish obtained from Teluk Lake showed a positive allometric relationship with a value of b = 3.7148. It showed that the increase in body weight of nilem fish was not linear with the increase in length. The catch results by fishermen for nilem fish found a male-to-female sex ratio of 1:2.15, with 90% of the captured fish in a mature gonad condition. The GSI for females ranged from 3.20% to 8.33% and for males, from 0.03% to 28.89%. The first maturation size (Lm) for male fish was 125.847, with a size class range of 116–126 mm. For female fish, the first maturation size calculation resulted in 112.996 with a size range in the 104–113 mm class. Lm is smaller than the average size of the captured fish, indicating that it is safe to catch, and there is a low likelihood of recruitment overfishing. Abstract

This community service activity was carried out in Kuala Tungkal, Tanjung Jabung Barat Regency, Jambi Province, to address the challenges faced by fishermen in identifying potential fishing grounds. The primary focus was creating a map of potential fishing grounds based on oceanographic data to enhance the efficiency and productivity of fishermen. The methods included collecting oceanographic data, satellite imagery, and performing geospatial analysis using ArcGIS 10.8 software to predict and map the potential fishing grounds. Training sessions were held to teach fishermen how to use GPS and fishing ground maps, enabling them to predict and navigate fishing locations more effectively. This activity was carried out by involving several participations; fishermen, local government, and Fisheries Service of Tanjung Jabung Barat Regency. The map produced by the team depicts strategic locations in the waters of Kuala Tungkal (FMA 711) based on sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll-a indicators. There are 105,633 potential fishing points being identified in this area. SST values range from 28.2°C to 32°C, and chlorophyll-a values range from 0.2 mg/m³ to 2 mg/m³.  The training outcomes demonstrated that most fishermen could effectively use GPS and the fishing ground map during fishing operations. The active participation of fishermen and the provision of technology training is pivotal in the program’s success. Consequently, the utilization of potential fishing ground maps based on oceanographic data has the potential to enhance fishermen's performance and contribute to sustainable fisheries resource management in the FMA 711 area.

Abstract

Using small mesh sizes on sein net in Lake Maninjau may lead to overexploitation. Research assessing selectivity of this fishing gear in this area is not conducted yet. Thus, this research aims to determine selectivity of seine net fishing gear operated in Lake Maninjau, Tanjung Raya District, Agam Regency, West Sumatra Province. There were seven units of seine net with 5 mesh sizes connected mesh sizes measuring 1.5 inches, 2 inches, 2.5 inches, 3 inches, to 3.5 inches that were assessed in this study. The results revealed that more than five species of fish were caught with various sizes, namely Tilapia (Orheochromis niloticus), Betutu (Oxyeleotris marmorata), Louhan (Amphilophus trimaculatus), Patin (Pangasius sp), and Sapu-sapu (Hypostomus plecostomus). Considering minimum landing size, 1,021 (82%) catch of Tilapia are suitable for catching meanwhile 231 (18%) are under minimum size for catch.

Abstract

Yellowfin tuna is one of the main catches in West Sumatera waters and has a high economic value. Fishing optimization can be improved through spatial and temporal predictions of fishing areas for effective fisheries management. This research aims to predict fishing areas using an oceanographic data approach through maximum entropy (MaxEnt) modelling. Data collection incorporating sea surface temperature and chlorophyll-a were obtained from the Aqua-Modis satellite in 2022 as well as fishing point data from Ocean Fishing Port (OFP) Bungus. The MaxEnt model shows a good level of accuracy in the West season (AUC 0,860), 1st Transitional season (AUC 0,918), East season (AUC 0,918), and 2nd Transitional season (0,920) The contribution of chlorophyll for one year is more significant, accounted for 75,3%, compared to sea surface temperature, constituted 24,7%. The Sea Surface Temperature (SST) values in West Sumatera waters vary on each season, ranging from 26,4 to 34.5 ℃ and the chlorophyll-a fluctuate between 0,03 and 5,45 mg/m3. The distribution of yellowfin tuna habitat on the map shows that most fishing vessel coordinates are in the Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) HSI value of 0,6 – 0,9. Potential areas for catching yellowfin tuna are around the Mentawai Islands. Keywords: Chlorophyll-a, HSI, Maximum Entropy Model, Sea Surface Temperature, Yellowfin Tuna
