Abstract

Water quality is a key factor in the cultivation of snakehead fish (Channa striata) because it can influence the level of physiological stress that impacts the health and growth of the fish. Three cultivation systems commonly used to manage water quality sustainably are the green water system, biofloc, and aquaponics. All three have different approaches to recycling waste and maintaining the balance of the cultivation environment. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of the three systems in maintaining water quality and reducing physiological stress in snakehead fish. The method used was a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three treatments and three replications. The parameters observed included levels of ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, dissolved oxygen (DO), and blood glucose levels as an indicator of stress. The results showed that the biofloc system produced the lowest blood glucose level (54 mg/dL), as well as the lowest nitrite and nitrate concentrations compared to the other treatments. Meanwhile, the biofloc system green water produces ammonia and dissolved oxygen (DO) levels, but biofloc is the most stable in maintaining water quality and the health of snakehead fish.

Abstract

The Business Partner Profile of Ikan Salai Bengkulu is a home industry engaged in fish smoking, located in Kandang Limun, Muara Bangkahulu, Bengkulu, approximately ±1.3 km from the University of Bengkulu. The partner’s problems include production and marketing aspects; although it has potential, the partner faces several challenges that need to be addressed immediately. The partner produces smoked products with the flagship product being smoked fish; the use of a smoking cabinet maintains the quality of the smoked fish, and the partner has not yet used natural PKM to increase fish production. This PKM program aims to improve the production capacity and competitiveness of Bengkulu’s traditional smoked fish business through the application of appropriate technology, hygienic processing, and digital marketing strategies toward an educational industry. Methods include socialization, training, and direct practice. Activities include training with material or education on natural preservatives, raw material quality, and digital marketing. The activities continue with practical sessions including the preparation of smoked fish using gambier soaking as an innovative preservation method. Partners are also trained to use appropriate technological tools, including portable smoking cabinets and vacuum sealer loans for hygienic packaging. This service is expected not only to develop the group or business but also to become a model educational industry. This is because it starts with the education provided, the technological tools used, and produces functional products moving toward downstream industry. The partner’s products underwent proximate laboratory testing to support attractive packaging, showing carbohydrate content of 1.31%, protein 47.52%, and minerals 12.52%. Moisture content produced includes below 20% and above 20% according to orders. Then the color and texture results are good after applying natural preservatives such as gambier. The activities increased from only 10 kg to 20 kg that can be made in the smoking cabinet; the use of portable smoking cabinets makes it more hygienic, with even heat and maintained quality, and the implementation of digital marketing can expand sales and provide education.

Abstract

The program purposed to enhance the capacity and independence of fishermen in processing marine products sustainably, healthily, and with added value. Through the application of natural preservation technology, marine products are processed using biopreservative materials derived from local aquatic agricultural resources, thereby extending shelf life without reducing nutritional quality. The program also emphasizes the integration of fisheries, aquatic agriculture, and nutritional aspects to produce high-quality food products and support food security in coastal communities. The implementation methods include socialization, training, production assistance, and evaluation of technology application. The outcomes demonstrate a transformation of the Raja Pulau fishermen’s group toward innovative, environmentally friendly, and market-oriented agroindustry. Significant improvements are reflected in product diversification, the development of functional products, and the group’s ability to produce alternatives beyond fresh fish. The use of ice as a preservative has also been substituted with natural alternatives such as gambier, carrageenan, torch ginger, and chitosan, which the community has learned to apply. These innovations not only improve fishermen’s knowledge and skills but also contribute to increased income. The products developed through this program have been marketed both within Bengkulu and beyond, providing tangible contributions to strengthening the blue economy based on local wisdom and supporting the vision of Golden Indonesia 2045
