Abstract

Abstract

Leucaena leucocephala provides the highest amount of proteins compared to other greens. However, its use is restricted due to the content of mimosine, an antinutrition non-protein amino acid known to be toxic to animals. This study aimed to observe the effect of administration of more than 10% of processed Leucaena leucocephala leaf meal to the level of T3, T4 and the thyroid histopathology. In this study, Leucaena leucocephala leaves were soaked in distilled water for 12 hours. The processed of Leucaena leucocephala leaf meal was made into pellets containing 0%, 7.5%, 15%, and 22.5% leaf meal of total feeds respectively, and was fed to the rats during pregnancy and lactation. The level of triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4), and the thyroid histological features were the parameters observed. The collected data were statistically analyzed by SPSS 20.0 for Windows using One-way ANOVA followed by Duncan Multiple Range Test to observe any significant difference among the 4 treatment groups (?=5%). Meanwhile, the presence of hyperplastic cells and follicle lumens filled with vesicles and colloids was descriptively analyzed by means of available literatures. The analysis of T3 and T4 level revealed that there was no any significant difference between the control and treatment groups. The epithelial cells of thyroid follicles in the treatment groups of P1, P2 and P3 showed hyperplasia and were detached from their respective basal membranes.

Abstract

hytoestrogens are active compounds, derived from plants, which have a similar structure and function as estrogen. Phytoestrogens are commonly found in legumes. Oncom, which is assumed containing phytoestrogens, is one of the most famous legumes food from Indonesia and widely consumed daily in West Java. This study was aimed to determine the effect of oncom extract on estrous cycle, endometrium thickness, and the number of antral follicles in productive age rats (Rattus novergicus). This experimental study was using 21 three-to-four-month-old fertile female rats and divided into three groups. Group I (K) was considered as a control group without any treatment. Group II and III were treatment groups which were given black (H) and red (M) oncom extracts 0.005 g/g body weight, respectively, orally with a feeding tube for 14 days. The length of the estrous cycle was measured by performing vaginal swab with interval 12 hours after first treatment was given and during the treatment. Endometrium thickness and the number of antral follicleswere measured by collecting the organs uterus and ovary for histological purpose with paraffin method after rats were euthanized post-treatment oncom extracts for 14 days. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and continued with LSD test. The total length of estrous cycle of control group, black oncom extract group, andred oncom extract group was 107,43±3,16 hours, 141,43±15,36 hours, and 161,14±17,10 hours, respectively. The mean of endometrium thickness of control group, black oncom extract group, and red oncom extract group was 346,945±65,88 ?m, 485,740±86,69 ?m, and 533,904±78,93 ?m, respectively. The number ofantral follicles of control group, black oncom extract group, and red oncom extract group was 6,00±1,54, 8,43±2,99, and 9,14±2,72, respectively. Results showed that black and red oncom extracts had a significant effect on the length of estrous cycle and endometrium thickness in rats, yet there is no significant difference in the number of antral follicles. In summary, black and red oncom extracts had effects on the length of estrous cycle and endometrium thickness, yet there was no effect on the number of antral follicles.

Abstract

This research was aimed to observe serum turbidity and blood sedimentation rate (ESR) as a predictorof hepatic damage in bali cattle. Two hundred whole blood and sera from 80 male and 120 female bullswere sampled from Mambal abbatoir, Badung, Bali. All blood were examined for their ESR and sera werefor their turbidity using ZnSO4 solution, besides we observed some hepatic damages pathology anatomicallywithout incision such as : internal bleeding, formation of connective tissue, swelling, and bile-ductenlargement. all of those damages were scaled graded from 0 (without abnormality) to 4 (more than 75%liver surface has abnormalities). Results showed all 86% bulls (male 32% and female 54%) have their seraturbidity ranged from 1,01-2,00, besides, 89% bulls (45% male and 44% female) have their ESR rangedfrom 3-8 mm in 24 hours. Most of liver abnormalities were : swelling (58%), bile-duct enlargement (50,5%),connective tissue formation (73%), and bleeding (59%) most of them were falling in scale 1 (less than 25%of liver surface area). Also, ESR has positive correlation (P<0,05) with connective tissue formation andserum turbidity value could be used to predict internal bleeding and connective tissue formation. It couldbe concluded ESR value could be used as a predictor of connective tissue formation and serum turbidityvalue could be used as a predictor for internal bleeding and connective tissue formation in bali cattle.
