Abstract

The discipline of Ethnomusicology in Indonesia still has problems related to issues of representation, relevance and contribution to benefit. This paper will discuss how efforts are being made to realize the discipline of Indonesian Ethnomusicology and offer more relevant paths. The discussion is qualitatively based on a general review of the historical setting of the emergence of representation issues in the Ethnomusicology discipline, considering the urgency of the representation issue in the context of Ethnomusicology in Indonesia and trying to read the Indonesian context to be able to offer a more relevant style of discipline. Questioning representation is an important matter in the discipline of Ethnomusicology in Indonesia, but there is work that needs to be done more hastily. Designing scientific disciplines that can help answer socio-political and cultural issues, such as issues of tolerance, radicalism, conflicts between groups, issues of ecology, economy and culture itself will be more able to make ethnomusicology more beneficial.

Abstract

Urbanization, globalization, and the intensification of cultural tourism have placed Betawi cultural arts in a vulnerable position amid changes in meaning, commodification, and shifts in aesthetic values. This study aims to explain how cultural aesthetics are mediated as a resilience strategy through representational practices in the Betawi Cultural Village (PBB) Setu Babakan. Using a phenomenological approach and representation theory, it examines how aesthetic experiences—in visual, narrative, and ritual forms—are created, negotiated, and interpreted by cultural actors, including government officials, local communities, and tourists. The analysis was conducted through field observations, in-depth interviews, visual documentation, and hermeneutic interpretations based on Bourdieu's theory of habitus, cultural capital, and the arena of cultural production. The results show that aesthetic mediation functions as a connecting mechanism between traditional values and the demands of the tourism industry, yielding three main processes: creative reproduction, representational transformation, and authenticity negotiation. These processes enable Betawi culture to survive and adapt without losing its essential dimensions of meaning. The findings contribute to the development of cultural tourism studies, cultural communication design, and representation theory in the context of Indonesian urban society.

Abstract

The potato processing industry in Indonesia continues to face high market demand, while domestic production remains insufficient (reaching only 1.22 million tons in 2023), resulting in dependence on imported raw materials. The expansion of industrial potato cultivation in medium-altitude regions offers considerable potential due to land availability; however, it is constrained by high-temperature stress, requiring varieties that are both tolerant and high yielding. This study aimed to evaluate the growth response and yield performance of three industrial potato varieties Ventury Agrihorti (local), Atlantik (introduced), and Bliss/Chitra (introduced) under two contrasting altitude conditions: medium altitude (600 masl) and high altitude (1500 masl). The experiment employed a Split Plot Design, with observations covering growth parameters, yield components, and tuber quality indicators, including tuber specific gravity (SG). The results revealed a significant interaction between altitude and variety on several parameters, such as plant height, specific leaf weight, number of tubers, and tuber weight per plant. At medium altitude (600 masl), the Atlantik variety demonstrated the best performance, achieving a productivity of 40.39 t/ha with the highest tuber weight. However, Atlantik produced a high proportion of oversize tubers (41.97%), which does not meet industry grading standards. Conversely, at high altitude (1500 masl), Bliss/Chitra showed superior yield performance with a productivity of 42.96 t/ha, followed by Ventury at 38.46 t/ha. Ventury and Bliss/Chitra also excelled in tuber size distribution, producing the majority of tubers (approximately 94–95%) within the Normal category (Ø 4.5–9 cm), which aligns with industrial processing requirements in both altitude conditions. The specific gravity (SG) values of all three varieties ranged from 1.08 to 1.09, indicating compliance with the minimum quality threshold for potato processing industries (>1.08).

Abstract

Abstract: This study examines how the Sekaten ritual in Surakarta has shifted from an Islamic da’wah-centred ceremony into a commodified cultural festival shaped by mass tourism and urban entertainment. Using a qualitative socio-cultural design grounded in cultural ethnography, the research draws on participatory observation conducted during the 2023–2025 celebrations at the alun-alun (town square), the Grand Mosque, the night market, and Bangsal Pagongan (theatre ward), alongside purposive interviews with abdi dalem (palace retainers), mosque administrators, vendors, and festival attendees. The analysis applies cultural transformation theory (Nasukah & Winarti, 2021), Lefebvre’s theory of the social production of space (Lefebvre, 1991), and ritual commodification theory (D. Picard & Robinson, 2006) to trace how shifts in actors, spatial organisation, and symbolic interpretation reorient the ritual’s meanings. Findings indicate that municipal institutions and market stakeholders are increasingly governing Sekaten through the dominance of the night market, commercial stages, and sponsorships, while traditional custodianship by the Kraton (palace) and Masjid Agung is becoming more marginal. Sacred elements, such as the Gamelan Sekaten (traditional music), Miyos Gangsa (ritual procession), and ritual symbols including nginang (chewing betel nut) and janur (decorated palm leaves), persist; yet, they often operate as aesthetic markers within a spectacle economy rather than as central media of religious pedagogy. This reconfiguration produces spatial secularisation as the alun-alun transitions from a sacred zone into a consumerist arena, and public participation shifts from spiritual aspiration towards leisure-oriented consumption, particularly among younger visitors. This study advances debates on religion, space, and heritage governance by demonstrating that ritual changes in contemporary Java reflect negotiated struggles over symbolic power—rather than mere cultural decline. It advocates for participatory preservation strategies that sustain both ritual meaning and physical form amid tourism-driven urban development.
