Abstract

BIODIESEL STORAGE EFFECT BASED ON DEGRADATION OF CPO BIODIESEL Biodiesel denotes as ester mono alkyl of long chain fatty acid such as CPO (crude palm oil) which can biologically degrade more than 98% within three (3) weeks, whereas fossil fuel degrade partially only. The objective of research was to investigate degradation of biodiesel during storage. The scope of this research covered the container design, storage condition, initial analysis of CPO biodiesel, and degradation rate during product storage by using oxidation rate of biodiesel. The results showed that there was degradation on CPO biodiesel during product storage. It can be seen from increasing of acid value and saponification number, decreasing of iodine number, increasing of total glycerol value, and decreasing of ester number in biodiesel product. Storage period prediction of biodiesel can be approached by using equation, i.e. ????=0.0012????2−0.0052????+0.0609. In this research, the maximum storage period of CPO biodiesel achieved at 27 weeks. Other result showed that well storage was achieved with closed-galvanized container.

Abstract

Chicken feet is one of sources used to produce biodegradable films due to inexpensive and abundant source. Chicken feet contains extracted gelatin amount of 27.61 to 33%. This biofilm was prepared from cassava bagasse starch with citric acid as cross-linker and glycerol as plasticizer. Cassava bagasse contains about 40–64% of starch. This paper observes the optimum composition of cassava bagasse starch-based biofilm preparation upon Central Composite Design with variables of gelatin, glycerol, and citric acid concentration with response of tensile strength and elongation at break. This research was executed in several steps, i.e. extraction of gelatin, extraction of cassava bagasse starch, and casting. Optimum condition of this biofilm preparation can be obtained at 12.98% w of gelatin content, 0.22% w of glycerol and 0.27% w of citric acid by releasing 21.73 MPa of tensile strength and 19.73% of elongation at break. Mass loss of biofilm with lower gelatin content gave almost the same mass loss for blank biofilm (cassava bagasse starch-based without gelatin content). Increasing of gelatin content in the biofilm, increasing of the biofilm mass loss. However, the biofilm had good thermal stability by thermal gravimetric analysis with higher temperature to obtain inorganic residue than that of blank biofilm.

Abstract

The Indonesian pectin manufacturing industry is underdeveloped, and pectin is imported to meet its increasing demand; we attempted to isolate pectins from various fruit peels, such as orange peel (OP), papaya peel (PP), mango peel (MP), watermelon peel (WP), and chayote peel (CP) and investigated their chemical characteristics (equivalent weight of the extracted pectins and their moisture, ash, methoxyl, and galacturonic acid (GA) contents). Acid extraction, purification, precipitation, and drying processes were used to process the isolated pectins. We examined their chemical properties for conformance to quality standards advised by the International Pectin Producers Association (IPPA). The moisture (except OP pectin) and ash contents (except PP pectin) of the extracted pectins were within the limit set by IPPA. However, the equivalent weight (W eq) of any of the isolated pectins did not satisfy IPPA standards. The methoxyl contents of the pectins isolated from OP, WP, and CP satisfied IPPA standards. High methoxyl pectins were isolated from PP and MP. The galacturonic acid contents of the isolated pectins were higher than the acceptable limit of the GA level. Thus, OP, PP, MP, WP, and CP are potential sources of pectin.

Abstract

Biodiesel has recently received much attention as an energy source with numerous benefits such as high degradability, negligible toxicity, and minimal emissions of carbon monoxide gases as well as particulates. Therefore, this research aims to compare, review, and summarize the conventional and advanced methods of biodiesel production. Currently, some emerging processes that were developed for advanced biodiesel production include microwave-assisted synthesis, ultrasonic-assisted synthesis, supercritical transesterification, and liquid phase plasma discharge technology. The types of feedstocks, catalysts, and operating conditions as the influential parameters in biodiesel synthesis are also discussed. Moreover, in the purification process, the effectiveness of purification depends on the type of catalyst applied in the synthesis process. This research also reviewed and compared several commonly used purification methods such as wet and dry washing, ion exchange and precipitation, complexation, and membrane-based separation that have shown significant results along with the impacts of biodiesel production on environmental and economic sectors
