Abstract

Syntax is a branch of linguistics that studies sentence structure and how language elements relate to each other to form meaning. Language errors are often found in everyday life, including those found in final projects or theses. This study aims to explore the importance of syntactic understanding in constructing effective sentences, especially in the context of education. This research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data were collected through content analysis of books, journal articles, and relevant previous studies from the last five years, and analyzed using syntactic analysis methods. The findings show that errors in syntactic structure often hinder clear and efficient communication. Common syntactic errors include the misuse of auxiliary verbs, improper sentence structure, and inappropriate word choice. This study concludes that a strong understanding of syntax is essential for constructing effective sentences, particularly in educational contexts, and efforts are needed to enhance syntactic competence.

Abstract

The indigenous communities, including the Dayak Kanayatn, face significant challenges in preserving their language and culture amidst rapid modernization. The traditional Dayak Kanayatn songs are crucial in preserving their culture, as the lyrics contain valuable vocabulary, history, myths, and moral lessons. This study adopts a qualitative descriptive approach, utilizing Charles Sanders Peirce's cultural semiotics theory to analyze the signs, referents, and interpretants within the lyrics of nine Dayak Kanayatn songs to uncover their cultural values. The analytical methods employed include transcription of the lyrics, structural and semantic analysis of sentences, identification of cultural symbols, and evaluation of the objects referenced in the lyrics. The meanings derived from the analysis are examined to understand cultural and environmental resilience, and conclusions are drawn based on these findings. The traditional Dayak Kanayatn songs reflect cultural symbols that depict agrarian life, harmony with nature, skills, hard work, well-being, and gratitude. Additionally, these songs also reflect social solidarity, community identity, as well as the life cycle and belief in the universe.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the code switching and code mixing of the Banyuke-Sakanis Dayak language, Banana"™ dialect, in Semayang Village from the perspective of sociolinguistic theory. The research approach used in this study is a qualitative approach that employs systematic methods. The code switching and code mixing of the Banyuke-Sakanis Dayak language, Banana"™ dialect, in Semayang Village, involve the phenomena of shifting and mixing between the Banana dialect, Bisomu language, Banyadu language, and Indonesian language. The Banana"™ dialect serves as B-1, while the Bisomu language, Banyadu language, Indonesian language, and elements of the English language serve as B-2. This process occurs due to the environmental factors of the research object, which is predominantly a bilingual and even multilingual family-based community. Code switching and code mixing are common linguistic phenomena experienced by speech communities during interactions. The community experiencing these phenomena is examined using sociolinguistic theory, as there is a close relationship between language phenomena and the community. Sociolinguistics discusses language from a societal perspective, while code switching and code mixing are among the phenomena that occur in speech communities. Data collection in this research uses the technique of observation through the method of note-taking. Once the data is obtained, the next step is data analysis.
