Abstract

This research was done to know the factors’ influencing students’ motivation to speak in a group discussion. This research is qualitative survey, in which the subjects are the Third-Semester Students of English Education Study Program of Tanjungpura University in Academic Year 2018/2019. The subjects of this research were 25 students in class A. The data were collected through observation and survey. Based on the data the students are motivated enough in speaking class and the motivation are relatively high across the students but most of the students faced several speaking problems such as afraid of making mistakes, lack of confidence, and lack of motivation. In summary, the factors that influenced the students’ motivation to speak in a group discussion are the students' interest to the materials of learning, the students’ interest to the culture of the target language, and lastly the reinforced that the students receive inside/outside the teaching and learning process. All of the factors are related to types of motivation, such as, intrinsic, extrinsic, instrumental, and integrative motivation. The writer claimed that knowing and understand sorts of motivation is essential with the intention of making a better teaching and learning environment

Abstract

This research was aimed to describe the teacher's experience in teaching speaking using STAD. The subject of this research was an English teacher of SMAN 10 Pontianak who was experienced in teaching English by using STAD. This research was a case study to describe the teacher's experience while using STAD in teaching speaking. The data were collected from interviews, audio-visual materials, and document reviews. The speaking score of 36 students from the Year-10 students of SMAN 10 Pontianak in Academic Year 2019/2020 was used in this research. The results showed that the STAD technique affected the students' speaking learning achievement as much as 9 out of 36 students experienced an increase in their score by 4%. Some internal factors contributed to those students' achievement, namely, students' contributions, motivating students, and improving student skills. Moreover, the findings revealed that some students did not achieve the goal of learning by using STAD. This is caused by several factors, namely managing time, managing class, and lack of speaking skills become the difficulties of this research.Keywords: Case Study, Experience, STAD, Speaking Skill.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to know the most occurrence types of code used in the novel and the purposes that contribute to those occurrences. The data were derived from qualitative technique using a novel as the material. The data were analyzed using manual coding and descriptive qualitative. The result of this research showed that code-switching is the most code used rather than code-mixing. The total of the utterances that used code-switching is 53 in total. Meanwhile, the most type of code-switching that used in the novel is intra-sentential which has 27 in total. There were some purposes that contributed to those occurrences, namely, quoting somebody else, express solidarity, and express disapproval. In the novel, switching a code is used to quote a famous expression, proverb, or writing some well-known figures. Also, it is used to express solidarity, to show the bonding between characters. A status relationship between people may be relevant in choosing the appropriate code. Additionally, express disapproval also can contribute to the occurrence in the novel, to express anger or unpleasant events. Therefore, the three factors are contributed to the occurrence of code-switching in the novel.

Abstract

This study examines English syntax, which is concerned with the study of the ordering of components or constituents in phrases and sentences. The spotlight of investigation was directed toward the ordering of the constituents of noun phrases found in the tale Cinderella. The noun phrases found in the tale were broken down into their constituent parts for two reasons. The first is to reveal the sequential ordering of constituents in noun phrases. Do all noun phrases in the tale follow the following sequential ordering: pre-modifiers + head noun + post=modifiers? Do pre-modifiers consist of determiners and adjectives? What constituents can these determinants be broken into? Do the adjectives consist of one single adjective or a series of adjectives? Do post-modifiers consist of prepositional phrases and relative clauses? How many prepositional phrases did the writer use to post-modify a head noun? How many relative clauses did the writer use to post modify the head noun? Did the writer place prepositional phrases before or after the relative clauses? Are relative clauses reduced or non-reduced in nature? Second, to reveal the types of noun phrases used by the writer of the tale"”basic or complex noun phrases. Are most noun phrases used by the writer basic or complex in nature? To attain the research objectives mentioned above, a descriptive method was used. This method attempts to describe and interpret the types and sequential ordering of the constituent parts of noun phrases found in the tale Cinderella.

Abstract

This research was aimed to design a booklet of local folktales to support junior high school ninth grade students English extensive reading activities as well as to help them to reach their reading objectives in classroom with the related reading topic. This research was a subject of an English teacher. The method used for this research was development research that used the first three phases of the ADDIE instructional model, namely the analysis, design, and development phases. We conducted the first interview, followed by documentation and observation to gather the data and used experts"™ recommendations and descriptive analysis to analyze the data. In the analysis phase, as the preliminary process of the research, we collected the data through interviews, documentation, and observation. In the design phase, we began to design a draft of the product. In the development phase, we started to develop a draft of the local folktales booklet followed by an internal evaluation. According to the findings of the research, it was indicated that the local folktales booklet was appropriate and able to support the students"™ English extensive reading activities as well as to be their supplementary reading material product to be used in the classroom.

Abstract

Speaking is one of four skills that are deemed to be important. In EFL Classroom, the students often suffer from English speaking anxiety. The purpose of this research was to discover the level of students"™ speaking anxiety and the causes behind it. Descriptive qualitative was used to investigate this research. This research was conducted on the twelfth-grade students of XII-IIS 2 of MAS Ushuluddin Singkawang. To obtain the data, observation and two questionnaires were applied. The questionnaires being used were Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale and the Factors Causing Students"™ Speaking Anxiety Questionnaire. To analyze the obtained data, data condensation, data display, and drawing conclusions were applied. The result revealed that 97% of the students experienced high to moderate levels of speaking anxiety. The causes of students"™ speaking anxiety were mainly the psychological factors such as; afraid of being laughed at; afraid of not having enough time to prepare; feeling inferior; nervous or shy; anxious when performing alone; afraid of the speaking test; terrified that other students will not understand; afraid of making mistakes; afraid of teacher"™s immediate correction; students"™ beliefs about speaking English; frightened of teacher"™s and peer"™s evaluation, and formal class situation. In conclusion, more than two-thirds of the students experienced high to moderate levels of speaking anxiety and 12 factors were found to be the causes behind the speaking anxiety in EFL classrooms.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the impact of the online class on students in learning English and investigate the level of students' motivation in learning English during the online class. This research applied descriptive research on eleventh-grade students of SMK Negeri 2 Pontianak in the academic year 2020/2021. The data collection techniques were measurement and semi-structured interviews, while the tools were questionnaire and interview questions. The findings of this research revealed the negative impacts of the online class, including students"™ difficulties in understanding the teacher"™s explanation and learning materials, problems in creating a conducive atmosphere for learning, and students"™ problems in time management. By contrast, the positive impact of the online class made several students more enthusiastic and more focused on study. Besides, the findings showed that 53% of students were qualified with a moderate degree of motivation. The online class did not significantly change the level of students' motivation in learning English even though the students faced difficulties during the online class.
