Abstract

Background: Skin is the outermost layer that covers and protects the body and is vulnerable to trauma, such as wounds. Turmeric and sea cucumbers are known to have properties in wound healing. Objective: This study aims to determine the effectiveness of a mixture of sea cucumber and turmeric extracts in the form of a cream to heal incision wounds in rats. Methods: Twenty-five male white rats, Sprague Dawley strain, and body weights of 250–300 g were anesthetized, and their skins were slashed. The rats were divided into five groups, namely negative control (wounds without treatment), positive controls (wounds treated with Bioplacenton® topically), and three treatment groups (wounds treated with sea cucumber and turmeric extract cream with concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, and 2% topically). Wound healing parameters were observed daily, namely accelerated wound closure and inflammation reduction. Data were analysed descriptively and tested using the non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis’s test. Results: The results showed that the wounds closed completely in all treated groups. Healing time in the group receiving treatment (positive control and concentration treatment of 0.5%, 1%, and 2% were 8.3 ± 1.5 days, 10.3 ± 0.6 days, 9.3 ± 0 .6 days, and 8.3 ± 1.5 days, respectively) faster than the healing time of the group that did not receive treatment (negative control was 12.6 ± 0.6 days). Conclusion: This study showed that sea cucumber and turmeric extract cream has the potential and is effective for wound healing and can be used as an alternative for wound treatment.

Abstract

Avocado fruit contains bioactive compounds that have the potential to act as an immunomodulator. This study aims to identify the ability of avocado oil as an immunomodulator based on the macrophage phagocytic activity and index of mice injected with nonpathogenic Staphylococcus aureus and to determine the most effective dose as an immunomodulator. This study used 30 male Deutschland Denken Yoken (DDY) mice, which were divided into five groups: placebo as negative control (mineral water), positive control (commercial immunomodulator containing Echinacea purpurea extract), and avocado oil 1 g/kg BW, 3 g/kg BW, and 5 g/kg BW. The treatment was carried out orally once a day for 14 days. Mice were induced by nonpathogenic Staphylococcus aureus on day 15 intraperitoneally, and after one hour, mice were euthanized to collect the peritoneal fluid. Peritoneal fluid smear preparations were made before active macrophages and phagocytosed Staphylococcus aureus were observed under a microscope. Phagocytic activity and phagocytic index were calculated. Avocado oil 5 g/kg BW showed the highest phagocytic activity and phagocytic index results with values of 71.00% ± 5.40% and 2.79 ± 0.14, respectively. Avocado oil enhances non-specific immune responses through macrophagephagocytic activity and index, demonstrating its immunostimulatory potential.

Abstract

Background: Malay rose apple (Syzygium malaccense) fruit has been used for a long time as a traditional medicine for diarrhea by the community. Malay rose apple fruit contains active compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, and terpenoids and could be used as an antidiarrheal drug. Objective: This study aims to test the effectiveness of the infusion of Malay rose apple fruit as an antidiarrheal agent in mice (Mus musculus). Methods: This research uses the method of intestinal protection and intestinal transit. The experimental animals in this study were 25 mice, which were divided into 5 groups, consisting of negative control (1% Tween 80), positive control group (loperamide HCl), and treatment groups using infusion of Malay rose apple fruit at concentrations of 50%, 75%, and 100%. The parameters assessed in the intestinal protection method are the frequency of defecation and the consistency of the stool, while the intestinal transit method is the ratio of marker passages. Results: The results showed that the antidiarrheal effect occurred at all concentrations. The best concentration as an antidiarrhea is shown by infusion with a concentration of 50%. The 50% concentration group had the smallest average on defecation frequency, stool consistency, and marker passage ratio compared to the values of the other treatment groups and was significantly different (P<0.05) compared to the value in the negative control. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the antidiarrheal effect of the infusion of Malay rose apple fruit occurs at all concentrations, with the best effect at a concentration of 50%.

Abstract

Gastritis is an inflammation of the stomach mucosal lining. Citronella grass (Cymbopogon nardus) is a plant that has been used in traditional medicine to treat diseases, including digestive problems. This study aimed to analyze the gastroprotective activity of citronella grass infusion on acidified ethanol-induced gastritis in Sprague Dawley rats. The study was conducted on four groups of rats that were previously fasted for 18 hours. All rats were given treatments: water (HCl/ethanol group), omeprazole (omeprazole group), 20% citronella grass infusion (P1), and 40% citronella grass infusion (P2). After 90 minutes, all groups were administered HCl and ethanol mixture orally and then sacrificed 90 minutes later. The stomachs were collected for gastric fluid pH measurement and macroscopic and microscopic analysis. The results of phytochemical screenings showed that the citronella grass infusion contains alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, and tannins. The pH values and the gastric lesion scores of P1 and P2 were significantly different (P<0.05) with higher and lower values respectively than the HCl/ethanol group. Macroscopic and microscopic examinations also showed a decrease in gastric lesions in the P1 and P2 groups. These findings confirm the gastroprotective activity of citronella plant infusion. There was no significant difference (P>0.05) between the P1 and P2.

Abstract

Shallots have been used for generations as traditional medicine, one of which is used in the treatment of diarrhea. This study determined the antidiarrheal activity of the shallot bulbs using intestinal protection and intestinal transit methods, and to determine the effective concentration that gives the best antidiarrheal effect in mice. This study used thirty mice and divided into six groups. The negative control group was given Tween 80 (1%), positive control group was given Loperamide HCl, and four various concentrations of shallot infusion treatment groups (1.25%, 2.5%, 5%, and 10 %). The treatment was given by the oral route. The parameters used in the intestinal protection method were frequency of defecation and feces consistency, while in intestinal transit method the parameters used were the percentage ratio of the marker trajectories compared to the overall length of the intestine. The results showed that the 1.25% concentration of shallot infusion indicated the best antidiarrheal activity and had a smaller ratio or stronger inhibition to intestinal peristaltic compared to all other concentrations, 2.5%, 5%, dan 10%. We concluded that shallot bulbs infusion with a concentration of 1.25% has the most effective anti-diarrheal effect. This research can be continued by measurement of other diarrheal parameters such as stool weight, as well as start and stop time of diarrhea to further clarify the anti-diarrheal potential of shallot bulb infusion.

Abstract

Background: Lipids come in from many different sources in ones diet. In this experiment, we intend to find out the kind of lipids that causes the highest increase in rat body weight and the most influence in the lipid profiles. Method: We compared three kinds of lipid: beef fats, egg yolk and palm oil which were added to the rats standard diet. Twenty-eight 20-24 week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 250300 g were randomly divided into 4 treatment groups given a high beef fat diet (BF), a high egg yolk (EY), a high vegetable fat (VF), and a standard chow diet (SD) as control for 30 days. The body weight of each rat was monitored weekly and the lipid profiles were measured enzymatically at the end of the experiment. Result: The EY and VF body weights increased significantly compared to the SD (p0.05). The total cholesterol level of BF, EY and VF increased significantly compared to the SD groups (p0.001). The triglycerides level of BF, EY, and VF increased significantly compared to SD (p0.001). The HDL-cholesterol levels were significantly lower in BF, EY and VF compared to SD (p0.05). The LDL-cholesterol in BF, EY and VF were significantly increased compared to SD (p0.05). Conclusion: High egg yolk diet causes a bigger increase in rat body weight, LDL levels, cholesterol levels, and triglycerides than the high beef fat diet and high vegetable fat diet compared to control. It also causes lower HDL levels than the other diet groups compared to control.

Abstract

Abstract

Background Nigella sativa L., commonly known as black cumin, is a medicinal plant widely recognized for its therapeutic properties. However, limited pharmacological evidence supports its antidiarrheal potential when prepared as an infusion. Objective This study aimed to evaluate the phytochemical composition and antidiarrheal efficacy of Nigella sativa infusion in mice. Methods A total of 30 mice were divided into five groups: negative control (Tween 80 [1%]), positive control (Loperamide HCl), and treatment groups receiving Nigella sativa infusion at concentrations of 25%, 50%, and 100%. Antidiarrheal activity was assessed using the intestinal protection method, with parameters including defecation frequency, stool consistency, diarrheal onset time, and diarrheal duration. Results Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, and saponins in Nigella sativa infusion. The infusion demonstrated significant antidiarrheal activity across all tested concentrations (25%–100%), with the 50% concentration showing the highest efficacy, comparable to Loperamide in reducing defecation frequency, improving stool consistency, delaying diarrheal onset, and shortening diarrheal duration. Conclusion Nigella sativa infusion at 50% concentration exhibits promising antidiarrheal potential and warrants further development as a herbal remedy.
