Abstract

Cerbera odollam  Gaertn. was used in traditional medicine as a laxative and antipyretic treatment of dysuria. This Apocynaceae family member contains terpenoid, steroid,   and several other chemical constituents, including iridoid that allegedly have cytotoxic activity. The  n-hexane and methanol macerating method was applied to isolate the secondary  metabolites  from the stem bark of this plant. The separation was carried out by vacuum liquid chromatography (VLC) and gel chromatography respectively. Characterization of the fractions was established using UV-Vis, FTIR, NMR,  and HR-MS spectroscopy which  produced a colored orange needless  cerbinal compound with melting point 188-189 0C. Toxicity assay was conducted by Brine Shrimp Lethality Test  (BSLT) method. The LC50 of 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 8th, 10  th, and  11th fractions of  each methanol extract  were  151.2; 56.96; 30.95; 3.37; 63.02 and 101.03 ppm, respectively. The 5th, 6th, and 9th fractions were not toxic  whereas other fractions were toxic and potential to be used as an anticancer.

Abstract

In this research, chalcones  of  acetylpyridine  derivatives  were synthesized  using stirrer method  with  a  base catalyst  (NaOH)  at room temperature. The compound  produced from the  synthesis  was  (E)-3-(1H-indole-3-yl)-1-(pyridine-3-yl)prop-2-en-1-one  (1).  The synthesized compound was  characterized using UV,  IR, NMR and Mass  Spectroscopy.  Its antioxidant activity was tested using DPPH method which  compound  (1)  showed mild antioxidant activity proved by IC 50 > 250 µg/mL.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to analyze the total phenolics, total flavonoids, and antioxidant activities of Amaranthus spinosus L leaves. During cultivation, these plants were treated with 2 treatments, biocontrol Effective Microorganism 5 (EM5) garlic and control (water). The A. spinosus L leaves were dried using freeze dryer and extracted by dissolving n-hexane, dicloromethane (DCM) and methanol. The results showed that A.spinosus L leaves treated with biocontrol had the highest total phenolic, total flavonoid and antioxidant activity content compare to the control. The total phenolic, total flavonoid, 2,2 diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and Nitric Oxide (NO) radical scavenging were the highest on DCM extract with each value of 74,656 mg Gallic Acid Equivalent (GAE)/g of dry weight (DW), 22,337 mg Catechin Equivalent (CE)/g DW, 0,373 mg/mL and 0,025 mg/mL. n-Hexane extract had the highest antioxidant activity on Ferric Thiocyanate (FTC) test (27,615 %), meanwhile methanol extract indicated the highest antioxidant activity on FRAP test (1,022 mmol Fe+2/g DW). From this study, it can be concluded that A. spinosus L leaves with biocontrol Effective Microorganism 5 (EM5) garlic can increase the phenolic, flavonoids and antioxidant activitiy contents of A. spinosus L plant.

Abstract

Cerbera odollam Gaertn is a plant found in Indonesia and used as a medicine. The separation was carried out by vacuum liquid chromatography (VLC) and column chromatography, respectively. Characterization of the fractions was established using UV-Vis, FT-IR, and NMR. Toxicity assay was conducted by Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) method. The LC 50 of 2 th , 4 th to 11 th fractions of the methanol extract were 874.78; 1076.71; 7.88; 0.85; 3.02; 0.23; 8.62; 3.94; 223.46; and 168.23 ppm respectively. The 3 th fraction was not toxic, where as other fractions were toxic and potential as anticancer.

Abstract

Pyrazoline is a bioactive compound but it is rare in nature. Pyrazoline has bioactivitieswhich are anti-inflammantory, antimicrobial, antibacterial, antidiabetic and antipyreticactivity. In this study this compound has been synthesized by reacting phenylhydrazinewith (E)-3-(2-chlorophenyl)-1-(naphtalen-1-yl)prop-2-en-1-one chalcone and thencatalyzed by acetic acid using microwave irradiation method. The yield of 1-phenyl-3-(1-naphtyl)-5-(2-chlorophenyl)-2-pyrazoline compound was 76,23%. This pyrazolinewas characterized using UV-Vis, IR, 1 H-NMR and 13 C-NMR spectrometer. Bioactivitytest showed that the pyrazoline compound does not have antibacterial activity againtGram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui aktivitas antidiabetes senyawa dari hasil isolasi ekstrak n-heksana dan diklorometana kulit batang jelutung (Dyera costulata). Teknik ekstraksi dilakukan dengan metode maserasi dan tahap isolasi dilakukan dengan metode kromatografi vakum cair. Uji aktivitas antidiabetes dilakukan menggunakan metode penghambatan aktivitas enzim α-Glukosidase dengan subtrat p-nitrophenyl-α-D-glucopyranosida (p-NPG) dengan akarbose sebagai obat standar dan diukur pada panjang gelombang 415 nm. Hasil isolasi yang dilakukan pada ekstrak diklorometana diperoleh senyawa asam benzoat, sedangkan dari ekstrak n-heksana didapatkan senyawa lupeol. Hasil uji antidiabetes menunjukkan bahwa asam benzoat memiliki aktivitas sedang dengan nilai IC50 143,259 µg/mL, sedangkan lupeol memiliki aktivitas kuat dengan nilai IC50 42,257 µg/mL (akarbose IC50 19,734 µg/mL). Oleh karena itu, dapat disimpulkan bahwa tumbuhan ini dapat digunakan sebagai obat antidiabetes.

Abstract

Some 2’-hydroxychalcone analogues have been widely used as an intermediate to synthesize various heterocyclic compounds, such as flavanones, flavanonols, flavones, flavonols and others. The heterocyclic compounds are also known to have a variety of interesting bioactivities in the medicinal chemistry and also have potency to be applied  in material chemistry including in industry. Therefore, 2’-hydroxychalcone analogues are often synthesized by researchers as intermediate, both in research associated with drug discovery and material synthesis. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of microwave irradiation power variations on the selectivity of reaction of 2’-hydroxychalcone analogue synthesis. The variations of power that have been used in this study were 100, 180, 300 and 450 W with using a domestic microwave. Based on the study, we conclude that the power variation of microwave irradiationwere proven to effect the selectivity of synthesis reaction. In this study, the most suitable irradiation power to be applied on this synthesis is 180 W.

Abstract

The piloted-village grant of University of Riau is a community development program which is granted for University of Riau academics to build a village in the sectors of economics and health. In this program, Desa Pulau Banjar Kari was chosen due to their active in developing their agricultural and health. In this program, the academic team from University of Riau supervised the community how to prepare and produce organic fertilizer based on Effective Microorganism technology (active EM, EM5, bokashi, and fermented-plant extracts). The products were applied into their garden as well as for commercial. Furthermore, the product was applied in increasing medicinal plants values.  In order to achieve the aim of this program, the team built a home for the preparation of the product, providing all the equipment and materials and as well as knowledge transfer by doing workshop. The monitoring and evaluation of the programs were done by visiting the area and do evaluation such as observation of the product, the sustainability of product and medicinal plants garden (TOGA). In conclusion, the program was successfully where the people in Desa Pulau Banjar Kari is able to produce the product by themselves and they have been transferring the knowledge to students and people from different villages.

Abstract

Mempening (Lithocarpus bancanus (Scheff.) Rehd) is a species belongs to the family Fagaceae which is found growing around the Talang Mamak tribal region in Kelayang District, Indragiri Hulu Regency, Riau Province. The purpose of this study was to determine the toxicity of leaf extract of L. bancanus (Scheff.) Rehd against Artemia salina Leach larvae using the Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) method and its phytochemical analysis. The results of the toxicity was determined against n-hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, methanol, and ethanol extract and they showed LC50 values ​​of 3.15 ppm; 41163.26 ppm; 5817.09 ppm; 817, 27 ppm; 9019.70 ppm. Phytochemical analysis of the leaves of L. bancanus (Scheff.) Rehd plant showed a class of flavonoids, terpenoids, phenolics and saponins.

Abstract

Flavonols derivatives of 2'-hydroxycalone have been synthesized under basic condition (KOH). The structures of all compounds were characterized based on the interpretation of spectroscopic data including HPLC, UV, FTIR, NMR and HRMS. Antioxidant activity was evaluated using the DPPH assay which showed that the flavonol 2'-hydroxycalone derivative was potentially active as antioxidants with IC50 values <1000 µg / mL.
